After meeting Gila over a pair of lederhosen in her funky Amsterdam clothes shop, London brothers 'Sugar T'(aka Tim Whelan) and 'Here Boy' (aka Jim Whelan) kidnapped and brought her back to London to form Sugardog. This original line-up included 'Fritz C' (Ronin/23 Skidoo) and 'John Gosling' (Mekon/Agent Provocateur). This was way back in the day, when Warehouse jams ruled the underground London scene. Working from a Hackney basement, Sugardog developed into one of the only live breakbeat acts of the time. |

Link | 2 | 1 | Native Daughters | Native Daughters | Denver | Instrumental | Native Daughters | Instrumental Heavy Rock band from Denver Native Daughters’ sound packs many of the body blows from heavy, riff-based post-metal. But it also draws melodies and rhythmic tension from the cream of the mid-90s emo/postpunk crop. There are a few of the twinkly guitar leads and crushing breakdowns which are hallmarks of these divergent styles. Equal parts blunt force trauma and tense, you won’t know what hit you, but you’ll be glad that it did. Link | 1 | 2 | Funeral Crashers | Funeral Crashers | United States | Funeral Crashers | The Funeral Crashers were always a fickle proposition. Formed on a lark by vocalist PH Lovecraft and other members since (dearly) departed, the group careened through rotating lineups and lengthy breakups in the early 2000s like a corpse that wouldn’t stay dead. The name, if you’re wondering, predates 2005 and if you insist on a cinematic reference, it was Harold and Maude. The band’s inspiration draws from punk, postpunk and early gothic rock, not to mention The Velvet Underground, 70’s glam and the Jesus and Mary Chain’s aggressive shoegaze. But rather than yet another nostalgia trip, the Funeral Crashers are focused on bringing their influences into the now. In winter 2005, Lovecraft and co-conspirators Edward Raison and Oliver Lyons, all vets of other local bands, were quite finished with plotting in obscurity and cut the demo EP “Children of an Indifferent God.” With the addition of bassist Frankie Teardrop, the group has since launched an attack on the New York City scene with their musical Grand Guignol. They twitch, creep and assault, wailing the Apocalypse and loves lost on one hand, winking references to historical oddities, horror novels and 50s sci-fi on the other: it’s the perfect soundtrack for your postmodern crisis.

Shortly after the band was formed rehearsals started but there were some difficulties due to a change of band members. This caused the creative process to slow down. In October 2007 the demo named "Annon Morin" that consisted of 1 intro and 4 songs was recorded. Yet again due to a change of band members it was decided not to release this demo. Shortly after that, Sirannon who then decided against recording a demo/ep began recording a full-length CD album "Semper Caliga" with Leinth on vocals, Haec on guitars, Lygbereth on bass guitar, and Wesretkau on drums. "Semper Caliga" was released and distributed by Unmerciful Death Productions (USA) on the 8th of August 2011. Soon after the release of the album, Haec - who succeedingly managed to play in the group for 6 years - left the band due to having relocated to the United States. Immediately after that, there was no one that could fit with Sirannon's ideas, so it was decided to work with session guitarists. Sirannon who started recording new EP in January 2012 in Izmir, experienced drastic changes both musically and visually, the style went through transformation. The work produced took the name of "Forgotten Laments Of The Forsaken," which has much clearer sound than the debut. It consists of 6 songs, more technical and melodical guitars and a new vocal style that is more in line with the new sound. For "Forgotten Laments Of The Forsaken" it was also decided to work with Unmerciful Death Productions.

Link | 1 | 2 | Fabio Perletta | Fabio Perletta | Fabio Perletta | Fabio Perletta Fabio Perletta (b. 1984) is a sound/installation artist and curator living and working in Berlin, Germany. He creates immersive auditory fields which engage listeners to experience intimate and meditative states. He uses sound as a vehicle for conceptual investigation and sensorial stimulation, exploring the intersection between different yet complementary areas such as science, psychology and human perception. Through an extensive study of Zen practices and quantum physics’ theories, he combines notions of minimalism/limit, presence, entropy and visible/invisible. His research delves into the inter-relationship between noise and silence, revealing a complex approach to the sound matter. Through live performances, sound diffusions, sound/light installations and audiovisual concerts, his works have been exhibited worldwide at festivals and art spaces including A×S / ak-sis / Festival 2014: Curiosity (Pasadena, US), BlueProject Foundation (Barcelona, ES), Museum of Modern Art — Lab3 (Medellín, CO), SoundFjord Gallery (London, UK), Café OTO (London, UK), O’ (Milan, IT), Kid Ailack Art Hall (Tokyo, JP), Kissa Sakaiki (Tokyo, JP), 90dB Festival (Rome, IT), E-fest Cultures Numériques (La Marsa, TN), Flussi Festival (Avellino, IT), roBOt Festival (Bologna, IT), Acusmatiq Festival (Ancona, IT), Krake Festival (Berlin, DE), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome, IT). Link | 0 | 3 | Sue Cho | Sue Cho | United States | Sue Cho | Susan Cho Sue Cho entered the Electronic Dance Music industry as a singer and songwriter in 2007 when she started working with Jon Pegnato. Although Sue had no previous professional recording experience, her long-standing love for dance music and 8 years of classical piano training quickly brought out her natural talents in both vocals and songwriting. Their first 2 releases, “Throw Me Down” and “Escape” marked the beginning of her continued success. She is now collaborating with renowned producers such as Robbie Rivera, Porter Robinson, Lazy Rich, Tommy Lee and DJ Bam Bam, while working on her solo projects with the label Illeven Eleven. Her songs have been supported and played by world-renowned DJs such as Tiesto and have reached the top 100 downloads on Beatport countless times. One of Sue’s most unique assets is the diversity she offers with her vocals and lyrics. She can be heard singing sultry vocals in one song and then screaming out punchy, punky raps in another. Her lyrics are never predictable, ranging from explicitly sexual content to depicting the core of an emotional conundrum. Sue is building a strong female vocalist presence in an industry that is predominantly based around male producers and DJs. She also continues to push the boundaries of clubs and electronic events with her solid live vocal performances. There is no doubt why she has become one of the most in-demand vocalists in the industry and will keep bringing something new and fresh to the music world.

Link | 1 | 2 | Toy Killers | Toy Killers | Toy Killers | The Toy Killers were founded in New York City during the late '70s by percussionists Mark E. Miller and Charles K. Noyes. While better known to many listeners for their appearances on recordings by the likes of John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and Elliott Sharp, among others, Miller and Noyes also gained notoriety for their wild and unpredictable live performances under the Toy Killers name. Firecrackers and other explosives often featured in these largely improvised performances, which took place at downtown New York venues such as the Kitchen and Miller's own venue, Mort's Social Club (also known as MortSocial and Studio Henry at various points). The group's lineup featured a revolving door of talented noisemakers: Sharp, Arto Lindsay, Thi-Linh Le, and Nicky Skopelitis on guitars; Wayne Horvitz and Michael Beinhorn on keyboards; Laswell on bass; and Zorn on saxophone and game calls, to name just some of the contributors. With these (and other) musicians fluidly coming and going, the group remained an active live entity throughout the early '80s. Based on the lineup, the group's music could run the gamut from no wave skronk (à la Lindsay's DNA) to percussion-heavy semi-tribal post-dance music. However, there were few Toy Killers recordings available during this era to document their ever-mutating sound. These recordings included a few scattered compilation tracks -- including one on the 1984 Homestead compilation Speed Trials -- alongside Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys, and Lydia Lunch -- as well as a cassette, Humdrum, which was not well distributed. The Toy Killers went on an extended hiatus beginning in the late '80s, with Miller ultimately moving to California and actually playing in a wedding band there during the '90s. However, Miller got back into the world of improvised music during the mid-2000s as he connected with Bay Area improvisers such as Henry Kaiser, Rova's Larry Ochs, and the Flying Luttenbachers' Weasel Walter. The latter persuaded Miller to hand over his old recordings of The Toy Killers for the purpose of making a CD, which became a finished product in late 2008. The CD, entitled The Unlistenable Years (ugEXPLODE), consists of 25 tracks recorded between 1980 and 1983, most of which were previously unreleased. Around the time of this CD, a revamped lineup -- featuring Miller and Noyes along with Beinhorn and newcomers Walter and Kaiser -- was in the process of recording a new album under the Toy Killers name. Pieter-Hekla was officially confirmed as one of four members of [l=Reckankreuzungsklankewerkzeuge] collective. Fullerton even posted a photo of Pieter to the thread on Planet Mu forums in 2002. DJ Hekla released a few remixes and 7" single on Planet Mu. He also wrote liner notes for Hrvatski' debut album [r=9465], produced dj-mix together with Keith Whitman and supposedly was responsible for artworks and packaging design of RKK releases. Later Pieter Christophssen (Mr. P.C. C.P.) name was associated with [l=Creel Pone] imprint. Commenting rumors of his involvement with the label, Whitman first said that Mr. P.C. C.P. was a joint pseudonym for a group of record collectors, early electronic music enthusiasts, sound engineers, etc. but finally admitted that he is Pieter.

Rob got people enthusiastic about reel to reel tape loop systems (Frippertronics style stuff), and he got a few people access to Penn State's electronic music lab, which had one of the earliest Moog synthesizers. The two also produced and promoted some interesting concerts before Greinke and Angus moved to Seattle in the early 1980s.They collaborated extensively for a while on early ambient industrial music until they moved on to solo work and other projects. Rob has been around on the local experimental music scene in Seattle for years, now running a small recording studio also.

Link | 1 | 2 | Matteo Uggeri | Matteo Uggeri | Italy | Matteo Uggeri | Matteo Uggeri Matteo Uggeri graduated in Design at Politecnico di Milano and started playing in 1996 with the Der Einzige project, inspired by the industrial movement of the late 70s, which remains one of his reference points for the following years; in that context, however, he developed a growing interest for melody and field recordings. His first work in the field is “Un’estate senza pioggia”, a sound diary of the torrid August of 2003, during which Uggeri carried his microphones around central Italy, meeting and working with fellow musicians. The collaborative component has been at the heart of his production over recent years; he has worked with Italian as well as foreign artists and constantly explored different musical languages, from dark ambient ("Kapnos", with the Meerkat collective, that includes Luca Sigurtà, Punck, Logoplasm and Fabio Selvafiorita), to concrete music ("Erimos", with M.B. and Fhievel), to EBM ("Slowmotion", with Telepherique), to the kraut rock ("Quatro Erogenic Occupy", with the Dutch collective De Fabriek), to electro-acoustic ("Autumn is Coming", with Andrea Ferraris and Mujika Easel and "Pagetos", with Luca Mauri and Francesco Giannico) to folk ("Fields of Corn", with Bob Corn). Only recently two solo works have been released: “Four Steps on Points” on Fluid Audio, in 2013, and “Untitled Winter”, on Scissor Tails (2014), records in which the acoustic component becomes more important. The collaboration with Sparkle in Grey has been running uninterrupted alongside these activities since 2000, Sparkle in Grey forming a permanent four-member band since 2005; with the group he shared unclassifiable and eclectic records, including an LP with Tex La Homa/Matt Shaw and a CD with the American Controlled Bleeding. Hallmark of the group are the illustrations with the distinctive image of the ’'Roundmen'’, whose pictures Uggeri draws with various techniques, also experimenting with disc graphics and rare videos between analog and digital, so far the two main poles and cornerstones of his artistic research. A good example is “Remote Control” (2011), a work on two VHS that mocks Italian TV habits showing an hour and a half zapping and whose soundtrack is provided by other artists involved in the project, including Zbigniew Karkowski, Jan Yun, Wooden Veil, Eraldo Bernocchi and If, Bwana. The work is published by Moriremo Tutti Records, Uggeri’s own label, a sort of counterpoint to the milder Grey Sparkle, a brand under which he often self-publishes his works.

[l=Yleisradion Kokeilustudio] was founded in 1961 by [a=Erkki Kurenniemi] who acted as a guide and a tutor for the young beginner, giving fundamental influences. In the 1970’s Ruohomäki created independent compositions as well as music for radio, ballet and film. In the 1980’s Ruohomäki was mainly involved with computer graphics and other experimental film work but in 1994, after an almost total silence of 16 years, he started composing music again. Ruohomäki worked in his original home town Helsinki, both at [l421996] and at [l421997] (SACMUS). In Autumn 1997, Ruohomäki left Helsinki for northern Finland. He started working as a lecturer of electronic music in the Conservatory of Oulu. Along with his composing and teaching activities, Ruohomäki is developing direct nordic contacts between composers, musicians and other artists.

There are no guitars in ubik., but both basses spit, snarl, whimper, turn around, and take languid naps: one is as likely to play huge chords as it is to play single-note basslines, the other is fed through an army of effects to come out the other end sounding... well... Link | 1 | 2 | Lowsunday | Lowsunday | United States | Lowsunday | Lowsunday are not your typical [l=Projekt] band. While the atmospheres on Elesgiem occasionally parallel those of other bands on the darkwave label's roster, the quartet's erudite energy will appeal to longtime Anglophiles (think Catherine Wheel or House of Love), shoegazer fans and gothic contingents alike. The fact that such a thoughtful band are headquartered in a city where decrepit classic rock continues to loom large make Lowsunday even more special. "It's a dilemma," admits singer-guitarist Shane Sahene. "When we play out, the appeal is getting to hang out with all of our friends. Being with people you love is the most important thing. Sometimes culture needs to take a back seat." Simply put, Lowsunday are modern indie rock brilliance. They fuse melancholic 4AD type textures with catchy pop melodies that instantly hook you, and from then on there is no point in even trying to escape the smoky wonderland created by this band, and you won't want to. Their alluring melodies and arrangements are so inviting. They have great potential, and they have the chance to be THE band to usher forth a mainstream interest in gloomy pop.
