Link | 1 | 1 | Kips Bay | Kips Bay | Kips Bay | Started as a rock trad unit by Pat Kilbride (Ireland), later members from the international folk circuit (John Whelan) and NYC session players ( Kinny Landrum,Richard Lindsey, Steve Missal) joined in the fun until the band, after two projects with John Simon ( The Band) & Steve Addabbo (S. Vega) as producers, went their separate ways...... Both CD's were distributed originally by Green Linnet Records and are available online in various outlets. The band is often credited with expanding the boundaries of "traditional" folk genres. John Mcgann, Tony DeMarco, Zan the man, etc are guests throughout. *** Putting together the right band wasn't so hard for Pat Kilbride, but giving it the right name, well, that's a different story. In 1990, Kilbride needed to get a band together for a party at the New York City club CBGB. He called it Kips Bay Ceili Band. The gig went well, and the group decided to make a go of it and soon was playing regularly at New York nightspots and Irish bars. The problem was they were not a ceili band, which plays traditional Irish dance music. "I used the name Ceili Band as something tongue-in-cheek because it wasn't a Ceili band, it was more of a rock band," Kilbride explained during a telephone interview from his home in New York City. "Some people were confused when they came to see us, expecting a straight ceili band. (Ceili) is a traditional Irish format, which is viewed as a bit corny, you know. It's in the same way that Electric Light Orchestra is not a light orchestra. But the name didn't work for us. We also had our problems with American friends who would pronounce it `seely' (the correct pronunciation is `kaylee'). "Don't forget, Celtic music is still a minority interest. People who know about Michael Jackson and McDonald's don't necessarily know about Celtic music. I got tired of people asking about the name, so we changed it." Shortened to Kips Bay, named after the East Side neighborhood where Kilbride lived when he first came to New York City, the five-member Manhattan-based band, which will play two shows tonight at Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, performs a fusion of self-penned songs and revved-up Irish tunes incorporating rock, blues and jazz. Kilbride is quick to note that the group does not consider itself a Celtic rock band. "Celtic rock is a particular term. It's a genre and we do not consider ourselves to be Celtic rock at all. I would call it roots rock with an Irish accent." Growing up in County Kildare, Ireland, Kilbride played the guitar since he was 10 and became fascinated with American music. When he moved to New York in 1989 "for a change of climate," it seemed like the best place for a musician with his interests. "America -- being the home of great guitar playing, singer-songwriting, rock 'n' roll, blues, and all that good stuff -- it was a logical place to come to, to explore those areas. As a kid I grew up listening to American music like Woody Guthrie and Mississippi John Hurt. My finger-picking style is based on American blues, a folk-blues style. But having said that, I am an Irishman, and also grew up listening to the radio and going to concerts in Ireland. One of my fortes is adapting traditional-style Irish music, normally played on fiddles and pipes, to the guitar." Kips Bay's energetic sound is produced by a stellar cast of individuals. Along with guitarist/vocalist Kilbride, 42, there is Irish accordion champion John Whelan. He's had a good run lately with the release of his solo album, "Celtic Reflections" (Narada), which made the Billboard album chart last summer. Drummer/vocalist Steve Missal may be remembered from playing with Billy Idol in the 1980s, especially for his drum riff on the song "White Wedding." Bass player Richard Lindsey is a popular session player also known in world-beat circles. And the newest member, New Orleans keyboard player Kinny Landrum, has performed with such artists as Jimmy Cliff, Robert Palmer and the Meters and won a Grammy for his work on the soundtrack for David Lynch's TV series, "Twin Peaks." The band's latest album, "Into the Light," is its second release on Green Linnet Records. Produced by Steve Addabbo, the disc combines seven new songs with four Celtic instrumental suites. With an emphasis on easygoing pop melodies and driving rhythms, Kilbride and Missal trade off lead vocals, while producer Addabbo adds to the fray, playing electric guitar. "Steve (Addabbo) produced Shawn Colvin and Suzanne Vega's first album, so we do have an interest -- how shall I say it? -- amongst generic roots-rock producers within the industry in New York City. However, we're a very private band. We don't have big management or big agencies, and we don't deal with big p.r. companies. We just go out and play our music."

Link | 1 | 1 | Murder King | Murder King | Istanbul | Murder King | It all started in 2002. They gathered together to perform only the songs they enjoy and have fun. Considering the conditions of our country, they decided to share their music with the places which goes live. For years, “Murder King” took stage in places where rock and metal genre played. There was no strategy or promotion of any kind. The happening spread through music lovers in traditional ways; by ears and eyes. The band reached its present position by using this advantage. With its substantial playlist involving over 150 songs, “Murder King” is probably the most assertive project among its genre. While the playlist was evolving into its current form, the band also carried on it's journey with different musical pursuits and covered some of the popular Turkish songs in their style. These covers, particularly the one called 'Aşk (Love)' received great interest. Songs which are uploaded to MySpace are played and shared tens of thousands of times. Hence, “Murder King”, proved that they are also assertive within the area of music involving Turkish lyrics and started to compose their own. Including three compositions and a remix, EP named “Marka (Brand)” published at the july of 2013. With Özgür Özkan as vocalist and bass guitarist, Fırat Öz and Össan Deneç as guitarists and Onur Akça as drummer; the EP received positive reviews and feedback. In the November of 2013, Can Uzunallı took over the microphone from Özgür and joined the “Murder King” as a vocalist. As a result of this progression, “Murder King” focused on their first album to be published. In the march 4 of 2014; first album named “Gürültü Kirliliği (Noise Pollution)” including 11 tracks has been published. 'Demokrasi (Democracy)' has been elected to be the first for video clip. Album and video both made a huge impact. Aside from human emotions, lyrics of the “Murder King” also deals with psychological and political issues. And we are inviting YOU, readers to be a part of this progression. Your existence is REQUIRED in the MURDER KING’s world!

Link | 1 | 1 | Lovecat | Lovecat | Austria | Austrian, signed with Fabrique Records | Lovecat | David Haering After the release of his bittersweet, melancholic solo debut "Tracking Heartbeats EP", the eponymous indie radio hit, and a remix for Morrissey's co-songwriter and guitarist Boz Boorer in 2012, LOVECAT returns with his debut album "The Great Catsby" in September 2016. "David Haering is the Viennese electropop man of culture behind LOVECAT. After stints in various Rock'n'Roll and punk rock bands, he found his musical homeland in the art of classical pop music dramaturgy. Under the cover of his pseudonym, LOVECAT repeatedly draws back into his bittersweet electropop refuge, simultaneously breaking to pieces and rising again, like a phoenix from the ashes" (Profil magazine) "Shit is literally some off-the-chart sound that you're going to absolutely hear all over this year's New York Fashion Week, a couple of weeks from now, and for the rest of the year” (Indie Shuffle) "Playful, bouncy synthpop..." (Pop Matters) "Infinitely catchy!" (Impose Magazine) "Melodic, danceable and full of good vibes, this is one cool album" (Beehive Candy) It was from the Cure's hit “The Lovecats“ that Haering took inspiration to name his band LOVECAT - although in fact David Haering is highly allergic to cats, and loves dogs more than anything else. |

Link | 1 | 1 | Norrøn | Norrøn | Denmark | Norrøn | The trio Norrøn consists of Pia Nygaard (violin), Nina Veng (flute, alt-flute and offerdalspibe) and Anja priest Mikkelsen (clarinet and bass clarinet), and their interesting musical concept - cf. plate title - is improvisation over a fixed melody. The pieces are composed by the trio members or are in some cases traditional. The name Norrøn refers to the repertoire, based on the "Nordic folk". An inclusive concept that gives deftly many improvisational opportunities. The musical idiom sounds, however, in this listener's ears as harboring a preponderance of the inspiration of our eastern neighbor - and certainly not that much from the domestic traditions. It may be because the musicians are most like themselves in the direction of not-so-Danish-sounding musical dialects. It could have been a fresh challenge to use it improvisational concept in a shaky Danish polka or galloping hopsa, but that's not how the repertoire is put together, and everything is fine with it. The improvisations is mainly to expand with new melody lines, while the harmonic patterns generally consisting especially when Anja priest puts the bottom of the bass clarinet. It is natural to expand with a voice in the third above the melody, and it also happens in several places. But the most interesting sequences occurs when the basic musical theory is put aside, the musicians turn the hair out, and freedom of flying. Only then felt the concept's magical possibilities for real, and the moments immediately rare. Norrøns idea is fresh and very welcome in the folk music otherwise often rule-bound world, but it is also demanding. It is natural that they need to start their experiments in partially safe environment. Study situation may have also promoted the caution, but it will be interesting to hear them move further out, where they can not bottoms. Similarly, they would free up more of a focus on tone rows and better let go of wildness, passion and other life-giving properties. Their musical skills rows significantly to it.

Link | 1 | 1 | Günter Maas | Günter Maas | Germany | Günter Maas | German Painter and Sculptor (born 1923, died 2010) is considered a pioneer of "audio-visual painting". In 1962 the synesthete made his first works in this genre. To do this, he used the image scanner of the former Munich Studio for Electronic Music of the Scholl Foundation (formerly Siemens Studio for Electronic Music). In the years following he refined the skill of "transforming abstract shape events into corresponding electronic sounds" (G. Maas). To scan his pictures electronically it was necessary to transfer them photographically to slides, which then could be converted into synthetic sounds by the Munich scanner device. From the collage-like layering of the recorded sound tracks arose the electro-acoustic compositions of his paintings. In a kind of iterative process, he adjusted always meticulously shapes and colors of his pictorial creations to the desired elctronic sounds.

Its path of research driven by deep interest in sound as memory and body of its territory has influenced all his artistic choices, designed in order to disseminate and preserve the characteristics and nuances which in an era of flattening and cultural assimilation would be certainly lost. Already in the 90s, she collaborated with established groups such as the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, she usually met the “trees of song”, those people who if prodded with the right amount of patience and kindness can convey tradition and improvisational of singing skills, such as sound and dance. Villani has the peculiar techniques of the singing and she is aware of the intention that is behind the steps of the Pizzica Pizzica, and it makes her educational workshops unique in Italy and abroad. After many record collaborations she debuts in 2008 with Ninnamorella (Animamundi / AFQ), her first solo work that has been critically acclaimed for the depth of her approach. “She has an atavistic voice, of awesome power and of shocking maturity, […] a treasure revealed,” wrote Guido Festinese on Alias ( music insert of Manifesto) of May 30, 2009. The album has had great success in Italy and abroad and has been programmed by several national radios (Rai Radio 3, Radio Popolare, Radio Shockwave, etc.) and foreign ones (BBC Radio 3 -England – Vancouver Radio – Canada -, etc.). The album instead “Fimmana, mare e focu! (Animamundi), published in March 2012 has been selected by the commission of Puglia Sounds, in reference to the regional competition “Recording” in order to be supported in the activity of promotion.

Link | 1 | 1 | Gregory Sagar | Gregory Sagar | Minneapolis | Guitarist | Gregory Sagar | Greg Sagar grew up moving around California, eventually settling in the Bay Area. It’s a mystery how he makes music. Playing left-handed (upside down), he couldn’t standardize his approach if he wanted. His work comes from being in touch with his subject matter – the outcome of an innate sensibility. Absorbing aspects of Flamenco, Andean and a touch of Brazilian along the way, he found in them a connecting thread to places experienced directly in his earliest years. The lyrical phrase and savored note – learned from the Blues – are intrinsic to his sound. |

Go Go Boy, Dirty Rats).

Link | 1 | 1 | The Discount Orchestra | The Discount Orchestra | United Kingdom | The Discount Orchestra | From the raw, visceral energy of Gypsy-Punk, to the feet-twistingly manic tempo of Speed-Folk, The Discount Orchestra provide a high-octane, seven-piece blend of eclectic dance-floor stomp, guaranteed to get you bouncing. Hard-grifting rhythms, topped with melodical oddities. Formed in South London in 2011, The Discount Orchestra take their inspiration from London’s dark, anarchic corners. Conjuring tales of love, loss, and post-apocalyptic survival, over a soundtrack that dances between genres. They’ve honed their live show at packed gigs and sold-out festivals over the last 4 years (Bestival, Wilderness, Boomtown) and have earned their reputation as a band to watch. With a line up of Sax, Trombone, Accordion, Fiddle, Drums and Bass, topped off with a combination of vocal styles, their riotous blend of Balkan influenced music incorporates elements of Folk, Gypsy, Ska, and Circus, with a healthy dose of Punk, and is perfect for a late night of raucous entertainment.

They were quickly caught and thrown into solitary confinement in cells across from each other. No record exists of which fashion crimes were committed to warrant such harsh custodial sentences, and the boys are staying tightlipped about it. Kept in solitary for six months, many conversations ensued revealing a love of evil techno and circus trapeze acts. Both were surprised to discover that as children they'd been taken to see the same amazing circus show. The act that remained indelibly stamped on their memories was that of a family of trapeze artistes called 'The Flying Lurinskys'. Dan and Michael were both blown away by the sheer audacity and bravery of this daredevil aerial troupe, and were deeply saddened to find out that 'The Flying Lurinskys' were all tragically killed last year while trying to incorporate a grizzly bear into the act. Circus insiders still maintain that the family might have been saved if the bear had been declawed before training began, but anyway... Dan and Michael decided to preserve their memory by taking 'The Flying Lurinskys' name for themselves, making every track an homage to this death defying family.

Link | 1 | 1 | Four Piece Suit | Four Piece Suit | Four Piece Suit | In 1996, saxophonist David Sholl, drummer Lorne Entress, bassist Dean Cassell, and guitarist Milt Reder came together to form Four Piece Suit, a genre-busting instrumental band committed to upending the classic American art forms of jazz, blues, swing, R&B, and many more. During their first year together, Four Piece Suit released Ready to Where? on Ocean Music to exceptional critical acclaim. As the swing revival became an all-out phenomenon, the group's appeal broadened (despite their steadfast and appropriate denial of the categorization) as they solidified opening slots on tour with big sellers like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Four Piece Suit also appeared on many high profile swing/lounge compilations and tribute recordings, received placement on a Grammy ballot for a Henry Mancini cover, and provided music for numerous film and television ventures, including HBO's Sex and the City. In the midst of their rapidly growing session and film/television music career, Four Piece Suit furthered their cinematic reputation with the release of their 1999 sophomore disc Matinee Idylls.

Link | 1 | 1 | Sar Nath | Sar Nath | Sar Nath | Sar Nath is formed by former melodic death metal/power metal live musician, Travis Niemeyer. At this time, many opening shows gave his bands fair underground status (opening for acts like Monstrosity, Behemoth, and playing Milwaukee Metalfest 2002). Finding that the music he was involved in at the time was too accessible, melodic, and not tortured enough, a change was made. The first decision was to stop live performances, retreating into a solitary, DIY recording situation in which raw, torturous aural catharsis could be made without others interfering in the honesty of the material's pessimistic and hopeless nature.
Link | 1 | 1 | And The Kids | And The Kids | And The Kids | "Recently called one of “the Western Mass. indie scene’s brightest creative lights” by Pitchfork, Northampton, Massachusetts’ And The Kids recently released their debut full-length album, Turn to Each Other (Signature Sounds). Turn to Each Other is more than an album title: it’s a statement of fact for the band, whose bond — as musicians, friends and creative foils — is as tight as they come. The album features 11 tracks full of ringing guitars from Hannah Mohan, knotty rhythms from drummer Rebecca Lasaponaro and bold accents from synthesizers and percussion by Megan Miller. Together, they create “apocaplyptic pop”, a dizzying stop-start ride with lush, intricate soundscapes that frame Mohan’s lively lead vocals. NPR Music recently raved, “Guitarist Hannah Mohan’s striking vocals rival the vibrato and boldness of Siouxsie Sioux… [And The Kids] make music that’s both fearless and entertaining.” An ongoing struggle with border issues for Miller, a Canadian citizen, initiated the addition of bassist Taliana Katz to the touring ensemble. Katz made her debut as part of the band at their NPR Tiny Desk Concert and continues to carry the energy of the album to the stage. "

Classically trained, escaped from jazz (drawn away by the too strict treatment of harmony), Sophie Agnel boards the piano from every sonic angle this musical vessel can offer : keys, strings & board are simultaneously apprehended, in a mixed procedure (as we say of painting techniques) that would be understated if it was reduced to the cagian definition of the prepared piano. Considering the instrument – that she extends with several accessories, paper cups, balls or strings – as a poetic supplier of anamorphic textures, the musician takes it to be an equal match to the wider diversity of musical systems, whatever the craft they where conceived in (from physiological to electro-acoustic) ...

Sometimes they sound like nothing at all. Through experimentation and improvisation Orecchia investigates the materiality of sound, seeking a balance between computer technology, hand-made electronics and real world sounds like the human voice, field recordings and traditional musical instruments. Orecchia’s background as a self-taught musician is in improvised performance and composition for video art, film and theatre. His practice extends to public performance and intervention and his recently completed master’s degree in Digital Arts brought a shift towards a more spatial and physical approach to composition, where sound, vibration, space, music and audience become connected in experience. Orecchia has released several recordings, been nominated for a South African Film & Television Award for sound design and published a sound work in the latest issue of the Leonardo Music Journal.
