Link | 0 | 1 | Martin Hannett | Martin Hannett | United Kingdom | Martin Hannett | Best known the innovative in-house producer at Factory Records between 1978 and 1981, Martin Hannett was personally responsible for the 'Factory sound' of that era. Hannett produced nearly every band on the roster at the time: Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, Section 25, Durutti Column and OMD. Following internal financial conflicts Hannett left Factory in 1982, but would later return to produce Happy Mondays. Aside from Factory artists Hannett produced many other bands, including Buzzcocks, Magazine, U2 and John Cooper Clarke. After years of drug related problems, Hannett died in 1991 of heart failure. That same year Factory issued a compilation of Hannett's finest production moments, since then there have been two further Hannett compilations.

Link | 0 | 1 | Ali Boulo Santo | Ali Boulo Santo | Ali Boulo Santo | Dieuorou Cissoko Born: in Dakar, as Dieuorou Cissoko Style: kora music / Mandingo / traditional / instrumental Ali Boulo Santo is a Senegalese kora player in his early thirties. He is a nephew of the king of the kora Soundioulou Cissoko and was said to be born "with the kora in his hands". Although he had played at various occasions and with various groups in Dakar he didn't get international exposure until he met Frédéric Galliano in 1999, with whom he works until today. He first featured on the first album on Galliano's Frikyiwa label, the album « Manding-Ko » by Hadja Kouyate. Ali Boulo Santo's style of playing the kora is outstanding because of his perfect mastering of this ancient instrument as well as his willingness to innovate (he used a wah-wah pedal for the first time on his kora, before Sekou Kouyaté of Ba Cissoko Trio), and the creativity to combines mandingo music with Senegalese and Western influences. Together with Guinean Ba Cissoko (Trio) and Malian Toumani Diabate he belongs to a new generation of innovating kora players. After various featurings on Frikyiwa concert tours, Ali Boulo Santo now has made a solo album « Komo Féllé », on which he shows again his talent of fusing kora music with Senegalese rhythms and international influences. His wife, Sira Cissoko and his young daughter Ramatoulaï contribute vocally each on one song.

Before Within Temptation became famous, she worked for a fashion company, leaving after the band found success with their hit single "Ice Queen". She utilises her fashion expertise by designing her stage costumes and the band's merchandise.

Link | 0 | 1 | Stevie Wishart | Stevie Wishart | United Kingdom | Stevie Wishart | Stevie Wishart Stevie Wishart is an English composer and improviser, and performer on the hurdy-gurdy and medieval violin. She has edited and recorded the complete works of Saint Hildegard of Bingen. Wishart was educated at Cambridge,[1] Oxford and the Guildhall School of Music, studying composition and electronic music at the University of York with Trevor Wishart and Richard Orten. She then studied improvised and aleatoric music with John Cage and David Tudor. From Machine For Making Sense's official website "As a sound-artist and performer Stevie Wishart has focused her performance and research with the Australian sound/text group Machine for Making Sense, and with her group Sinfonye which specialises in repertories from c1000 to 1400 and has led to a discovery of female poet-composers-artists. Both groups have informed her work in solo performance. Using digital technologies for creating, processing and visualising sound in space, she also references medieval technology, iconography and sound, as embodied in the hurdygurdy. The rub of visual and sound technologies from the medieval, the contemporary, and the virtual, have a sensuality all their own. Current projects include the sound installation and performance Ut v.2 with the artist Joan Grounds which was hosted at the Contemporary Atrts Centre of South Australia in partnership with a residency at the School of Architecture & Design and School of Art at the University of S.A. She is currently working on the sound for the short film " " by Margie Medlin for Federation Square and the Evolution of Cinema exhibtion at Z.K.M, Germany".

Link | 0 | 1 | Blue Midnight | Blue Midnight | United Kingdom | Blue Midnight | Blue Midnight, formed by school friends David Johnson and Grant Showbiz in the squat lands of West London, were originally part of the "bad music" scene, forerunner of the "Lo-Fi" movement in the post-punk era. With the genius violinist Elliet Mackrell and lively trombonist Nick Waterhouse they plied their trade in such venues as the Idiot Ballroom - in the basement of the now demolished Clarendon Hotel in Hammersmith; Alan Dogend’s Little Majic Theatre - a squatted venue in West London; the Raindrop Hotel - situated in the Free State of Frestonia; and the wondrous Meanwhile Gardens, often sharing the same bill as The Mob, World Domination Enterprises and the Instant Automatons. At one point Blue Midnight dallied with being a ‘proper music’ band and were compared at the time to the likes of Dexys Midnight Runners. However they quickly realised that this was not their forte and returned to their original humble beginnings, playing what they most desired with a line-up of violin, trombone, harmonica and vocal backed by bass and drums. With no chordal instruments in the band their unique style has been referred to as a “spacey folk-dub brass fiesta”.
