Link | 0 | 4 | Alex Paterson | Alex Paterson | Alex Paterson | Duncan Alexander Robert Paterson Born: 15 October 1959 Paterson had worked as a roadie for [a=Killing Joke] during the '80s, and began to be influenced by the explosion of Chicago house music in England during the mid-to-late-'80s. He joined the A&R department of [l=E.G. Records Ltd.] Records - the home of [a=Brian Eno] himself - and first recorded as the Orb with [a=Jimmy Cauty]. The duo's first release as the Orb, the failed acid-house anthem "Tripping on Sunshine", appeared on the 1988 compilation album [r=196216]. Alex Paterson and Jimmy Cauty had been recording an album during the turn of 1989-90, but the two split in April 1990 - a result of Paterson's fear that the Orb had become known more as a [a=The KLF] side-project than an original act. Cauty stripped Paterson's contribution to the recordings and released the eponymous album - credited simply as Space - later that year. The Orb released several albums trough the '90s, including [r=13265], [r=67736] (which were only available for one day but still managed to place in the Top 50) and [r=434489].

Link | 2 | 2 | Pikes in Panic | Pikes in Panic | Pikes In Panic | Garage punk psych band from Siena, Italy. The Pikes in Panic story begins with the Siennese band Rumble Fish (1983/84) founded by Lorenzo Carlucci (guitar and vocals), Roberto Censi (bass), Gianni Bertacchi (guitar and vocals – then with [a=I Barbieri]), Marco Pallassini (drums). After two years and two self produced cassettes Marco Pallassini decided to leave the band and move to London where he later joined the Cannibals of [a=Mike Spenser]. Andrea Brogi (then with Psychomotor Pluck) took Marco’s place and Marco Sammicheli became lead guitarist, at the same time he also played with Arco e I Bizzarri, a band founded by Luca Losi (vocals), Michele Landi (drums) and Claudio Maccari (bass). The Bizzarri were working out a sixty’s sound with various influences and the next step was the obvious merge of the two bands with the addition of the keyboard player Angelo Giallombardo who had already played with the Rumble Fish in the self produced cassette “Garage Band”. This new merge produced an infernal array of sounds ranging from the most diverse musical genders that went from Punk-Psychedelia-Sixties Punk- Hammond style (the first Deep Purple)-Hendrix-Soul Stax and Motown and these influences where clearly perceivable in their songs. The Band’s original name Pikes in Panic (invented by Luca) was inspired by Marco and Roberto’s passion for fishing. The band quickly tried to develop its own unique sound and they tried to achieve this with their instruments . Just before their first recordings and concerts they roamed across Italy, sacrificing time and money, in search of original instruments.

Link | 0 | 4 | Jimmy Carl Black | Jimmy Carl Black | United States | Jimmy Carl Black | James Carl Inkanish, Jr. Born: 1st February 1938, El Paso, Texas, USA. Died: 1st November 2008, Traunstein, Germany. American drummer and vocalist. Best known for his work with [a=Frank Zappa] and original drummer in the first line-up of 'The Mothers', with his introductory line "Hi, boys and girls - I’m Jimmy Carl Black, and I’m the Indian of the group”. Also referred to by [a=Don Van Vliet] as "Indian Ink" during their musical association. Black co-founded several groups and featured on many recordings after departing Zappa's band - with whom he made the first 8 albums. However, JCB appeared on some Zappa works thereafter, such as the vocalist on "Harder Than Your Husband" - a number on which he can also be seen performing with FZ (in Albuquerque) on friend John Cline's vid-clip on YouTube (To which FZ agreed). JCB met his wife Moni ([a3133949]) at a gig (whilst drumming with the Farrell/Black Blues Band) in Traunstein, Germany when he was 58. He spoke no German and she spoke no English, although the fact she had been a devoted Mothers fan for 25 years obviously helped communications and they married 11 months later. Soulmates until he passed away, Moni regularly accompanied him to Zappanale events. Black had almost completed a book of his life story when he died and it was finally published in the Fall of 2013, entitled "For Mother's Sake - The Memoirs And Recollections Of Jimmy Carl Black 1938-2008". Black was first a member of The Soul Giants with [a=Roy Estrada] and [a=Ray Collins], who were joined by Zappa, whose concepts subsequently morphed the band into a Mothers line-up. After his long association with FZ, Black formed [a=Geronimo Black] with [a=Bunk Gardner] in 1970 (Geronimo Black also being the name of his 3rd son). He then co-founded The Grandmothers with Gardner, [a=Don Preston] and Collins in 1980. He also formed his own label '[l95759]', performed with The Muffin Men and and has collaborated with a diverse number of artists, including: [a=Arthur Brown], [a=Mannish Boys], [a=Ant-Bee], [a=Eugene Chadbourne] (Jack & Jim Show), [a=Sandro Olivia] (Black Olive), [a=Zjakki Willems], The X-tra Combo, [a=Ener Bladezipper], [a=Ella Guru] and the artist who also worked on "The Jimmy Carl Black Story", [a=Jon Larsen].

With their career seemingly stalled at the start of the new millennium, John Ralston (b. Lake Worth, Florida, USA; vocals/guitar), Nathan Jezek (guitar), Steven Eshelman (bass) and Jeff Snow (drums) adopted the Legends Of Rodeo moniker and began pursuing a more conventional rock direction. A major label contract with the MCA Records affiliated Bieler Bros. label ensued. Their 2002 debut, A Thousand Friday Nights, was a pleasant collection of hard-driving roots rock, but the lack of originality that had bedeviled the Recess Theory was again apparent and the album was greeted with general indifference. The band members carried on touring and recording, but with MCA experiencing restructuring problems they opted to put Legends Of Rodeo on hiatus shortly afterwards. Lead singer Ralston launched a solo career in 2004 with the well-received Needle Bed.

Mostly influenced by Nurse With Wound, Illusion Of Safety and Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa’ surrealist collages, and the unique atmospheres of Zoviet France, The Hafler Trio, Whitehouse, Coil’s albums. Bands characterised by an unlimited freedom of creation. De Mange Machine uniqueness rests on in the simplicity and essence of the elements. His universe is built on a great variety of sounds coming from electronic generators as well as various items. The sound produced by these everyday objects become much more expressive than any traditional instrument. “Conscience ou le règne de l’animal malade” is an introspective journey inside the brain, an underground exploration in the form of a kaleidoscope of experiences memories, pain, and pleasures, discoveries and unanswered questions. Emotions are not considered here at all - they are replaced by sensorial stimulation. restricted to there very essence, this is a timeless album, arising from a blinding, arrhythmic labyrinth of beauty. Demange Machine’s work is thus a reflection of our lives in turns beautiful or monstrous, but always complex, paradoxical.

Link | 1 | 3 | Dirk Leyers | Dirk Leyers | Dirk Leyers | Dirk Leyers For Dirk Leyers, music has always been instinctive and informative. Getting his hands on instruments at an early age opened a pathway to the innate form of communication that music represents for him. A move to Cologne in the 90s led to a meeting with Matias Aguayo, together with whom he formed the groundbreaking unit Closer Musik, which culminated in an intensely productive period in Buenos Aires. When that chapter closed several prolific years later, Dirk Leyers established his solo project in Berlin and released the “Wellen” EP on Kompakt. In addition to his solo work, he has pursued collaborations with various artists such as Justus Köhncke and Eric D Clark, with whom he released “An Ounce of Memories” (Firm Records), and also Nerk and Khan, whose torrid vocals appear on the single “Fear My Fire” (V-Records). Another project with Justus Köhncke, Kontrast, resulted in the 12” “Stammtisch der Verzweiflung” and the track “Grey Skies to Blue” on the Kompakt Total 7 compilation. These days he works closely together with Nerk, one half of Toktok, both in the studio and as a live act. Together they have released tracks on Speicher, V-Records, MBF, Firm and Klang Elektronik. Dirk Leyers' new 12” “Alma" will be released on Klang Elektronik in April 2008.

Link | 3 | 1 | James Welburn | James Welburn | James Welburn | Ecperimental, Drone and Noise band from Lillehammer, Norway Reductionist, monolithic, raw bass playing engulfed in a fog of granulated drones, and driven by relentless beats... James Welburn steps into the ashes covered in drones and noise together with drumming partner Tony Buck (The Necks), producing a debut album crushingly epic. Hailing from the UK, but located in both Berlin (DE) and Lillehammer (NO), James has been on a path to catch the perfect drone through the last years, playing an abundance of underground drone and noise sets in Berlin and Norway. This can be heard on Hold, though set in an impressively produced setting closer to a recent Swans record rather than the raw noise of those early live shows. It's hard to label the album too much in one style, as it shifts and turns into parts inspired by everything from Shoegaze to Black Metal, all set in a state of endless repetition. James Welburn worked with artist like: Svarte Greiner, Simon Scott, James Welburn, Bragge Tormaenen, Eric Thielemans, Gareth Davis, Markus Lang, Tony Buck

Born: 21st June 1944 in Woolwich, London, England. Initially began his career as a session drummer, but quickly moved on and joined The Graham Bond Organisation in 1966, with whom he stayed until 1968, when he briefly joined [a299538], before forming his own act, [a97325], with [a249817], and [a268714]. They recorded 3 studio albums, but were disbanded in November 1971. In 1972, he formed Tempest, who released 2 albums before matters came to a close in 1974. Along with [a208220], and [a321792], he formed [a320822] in 1975 and like the original Colosseum, they too released 3 albums, before they were instrumental in the success of the [a84839] album, 'Variations'; which reached number 2 in the UK Album Charts in 1978. Later that year Gary Moore left to rejoin Thin Lizzy, and Colosseum II went the way of Hiseman's previous bands. He spent the next sixteen years on various projects with his wife, and saxophonist, [a=Barbara Thompson], whom he had married in 1967, including live appearances, and score writing for film and television. His largest body of work, however, has been the fourteen albums that he recorded with the The United Jazz And Rock Ensemble between 1977 and 2002. Colosseum were reformed in 1994 for a reunion gig, and have toured several times since. On the death of Dick Heckstall-Smith in 2004, Barbara Thompson, who had been in the various line-ups of Colosseum, joined as a permanent member replacing him on saxophone. Credited as "one of the earlier riders of the swing band revival" and an influential part of the Swing Revival movement in general, the Swingtips was founded by Kregg Barentine, who toured with the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1993-1994, and by Paul Maranto, a Phoenix dance instructor and guitar player. Originally called "The Wingtips", the band changed its name to the Swingtips and within the first year, co-founder, Paul Maranto, left the band. Barentine's original compositions helped define the era with such notable songs as "Checkbook Daddy-O", "The Business End Of The Barrel", "Let's Play Some Ball", "Santa Swings", "Roswell", and "Sam The Clam", many of which appeared on numerous CD compilations during the late 1990s and well into 2000s.

A nice description of their music can be found in a Booklet to their first Tape-Release It’s music that, except guitar and bass, mainly has electric origins, that flows, sways and encourages to dream. It should kidnap the listener out of his everyday life in another, wonderful world. Music for films that is played while driving around with the car or daydreams. Constantly changing between introverted soundtracks and elaborated electro tracks. A complex and multifarious “Industrial Pop”, inspired of a emotional-melancholic attitude whose inspiration has its origins in Manchester an the factory-label of Section 25 and Joy Division. Link | 3 | 1 | Mortalicum | Mortalicum | Sweden | Mortalicum | MORTALICUM from the northern parts of Sweden (Sundsvall) was formed in early 2006 by Patrick Backlund, the mastermind behind QUICKSAND DREAM, an obscure epic heavy metal band that started out in late '80s. Initially MORTALICUM was more of a studio project of Patrick who wrote and recorded several songs during the first two years, songs on which he did all the instrumental tracks. During that time Robert Wiklander joined to handle the vocals for the demos, but he actually had done some drumming on the first few jam sessions too. Many different songs were recorded and tried out both during the jams and as demos. Those demos were never released, but since many songs were shared and welcomed on their MySpace page, they felt that they were on the right track towards creating their style of doomy heavy metal mixed with some classic hard rock. At the end of 2007 things started to happen as two more members joined the band. Two guitarists, Henrik Högl (lead) and Mikael Engström (rhythm) joined Patrick and Robert, but Mikael had actually been in the background of MORTALICUM since the very beginning and was also around during the early jam sessions back in 2006. In the beginning of 2008 the final piece of the puzzle was put in place when the drummer Andreas Häggström joined. Later that year, in September, the band debuted live. This show was also recorded and bootlegged as the "Live and Heavy" - live at Pipeline. In spring 2009 some changes occurred within the band and they parted ways with the vocalist Robert. Instead, Henrik was chosen to do the vocals, mainly because the band wanted to focus on the heavier and more melodic side of their style. After the line-up change MORTALICUM performed a couple of live shows during the summer and autumn. The last gig was the highlight when the band played together with GRAND MAGUS. At the the end of 2009 MORTALICUM started the pre-production of their full-length debut "Progress of Doom". Well prepared, they entered the studio in November 2009 and recorded the album in just a few days. The band put one song off their forthcoming album ("Into the Night") on their MySpace page and that one song was enough to grab Metal On Metal Records' attention. Upon hearing the whole album, no doubts were left on the label's part and soon the record deal for the release of "Progress of Doom" in April 2010 was signed. The debut album, recorded practically in 2 days, live in the studio, offers infectious and groovy tunes rooted in '70s rock and '80s metal with fine, classy lead work, crushing doom riffs and warm, organic production. In the beginning of 2011 MORTALICUM started writing new material and decided to record and offer one song, "Black Flame (The Sinister Priest)", exclusively for the "Compendium of Metal Vol. 4" compilation CD released by Metal On Metal in April. In February 2011 the band did a small tour in UK together with IRON VOID, THE PROPHECY and label-mates NOMAD SON, including performance at the Doomsday IV festival in Wakefield on Feb. 12th. During the second half of 2011 MORTALICUM spent a lot of time working in the studio with the pre-production and recording of their second album entitled "The Endtime Prophecy". The CD was released on April 27th 2012 through Metal On Metal Records. In November 2012 MORTALICUM played at the Malta Doom Metal festival, where they shared the stage with THE BLACK, DAWN OF WINTER, FORSAKEN, HOODED PRIEST, CHILDREN OF DOOM, TETHRA and others, and they also did an extra club show on Malta the day after. In December 2012 the band started writing for their third album. Things progressed quite well until February 2013, when Mikael Engström decided to leave the band for personal reasons. MORTALICUM however quickly decided to continue as a power-trio and after a few rehearsals they found themselves quite comfortable with the setup. The writing process continued and they planned to start recording in May, but in April the drummer, Andreas Häggström, slipped on ice and broke his ankle. This forced the band to postpone all rehearsing and recording for almost three months. In late June they did the first rehearsal again. September 2013 saw the long awaited start of recording the new album. In October the drum tracks were finished, in late November the rhythm guitar tracks were finished and in December most of the lead tracks were done. During January 2014 all remaining vocals, leads and bass tracks were recorded, and the album was mixed and mastered. "Tears from the Grave" will be released at the end of April (precisely on April 25th 2014), like the two previous albums, by Metal On Metal Records. Meanwhile MORTALICUM appeared at 2 festivals: Doom over Scania on March 28th and 29th in Hässleholm and Malmö respectively, where they shared the stage with SORCERER, STONEGRIFF, VOID MOON, HANDS OF ORLAC and NYMF, and Springdoom Depression VI festival on April 5th in Vienna, where they played with ATLANTEAN KODEX, STONEGRIFF, EVANGELIST and COSMIC WASTELAND. Mixed with good old heavy metal and some '70s hard rock, and often characterized by faster tempos, MORTALICUM's music is not doomed to be exclusively for the genre's purists and followers. Get ready for some really heavy and catchy doom metal made in the best Swedish tradition! (source: http://metal-on-metal.com)

Their staging can be characterized as a plethora of physical and acoustic momentum, with destructive performances involving self-mutilation and bleeding, receiving high critical acclaims in the underground live scenes and are touted as one of the most exciting acts. |

Link | 2 | 2 | Ad Frank | Ad Frank | United States | Ad Frank | Before starting his solo career, singer/songwriter Ad Frank spent a decade in the Boston-based power pop band Miles Dethmuffen. Although bassist Linda Bean-Pardee was that band's primary singer, most of their songs were written or co-written by Frank, whose occasional, dryly ironic lead vocals complemented Bean-Pardee's nicely. Miles Dethmuffen recorded three well-received albums -- Nine-Volt Grape (1990), Clutter (1994), and Miles Dethmuffen (1995) (as well as 1992's outstanding Mouth of Hell 7") -- before changing their name to the less-goofy (and more forgettable) Permafrost in 1996. After Permafrost's sole album, 1997's In Harm's Way, sank almost immediately upon release, guitarist Kevin Coombs left the band. Frank, Bean-Pardee, and drummer Adam Goodwin continued as a trio for a brief period, but broke up amicably before any new recordings were made. Songs written by the trio but never recorded by them appear on Frank's first two solo albums. Ad Frank's self-titled solo debut came out on the Boston indie Jackass Records in 1999, featuring a new recording of Miles Dethmuffen's 1995 song "Sleeping Bag" and a solo acoustic version of Romeo Void's "Flash Flood" alongside a strong group of new originals. Bean-Pardee, Cindy Goh (of Jumprope), and Bill Goffrier (of the Embarrassment and Big Dipper) all guest. The follow-up, Mister Fancypants, was released in April 2001.

Link | 1 | 3 | Never the Bride | Never the Bride | United Kingdom | Never The Bride | Rock's Best Kept Secret Never the Bride's Nikki Lamborn and Catherine Feeney first met on stage at a jam session in a London pub. Instant rapport and a similar taste in music and direction, lead to more jamming before Nikki from Bristol and Catherine, better known as Been, from Glasgow, formed a song writing collaboration. Nikki commuted to write, gig and busk in Covent Garden. Never the Bride was born and the duo built up a core following around the capital. Their live reputation went from strength to strength and big support slots followed from The Who, ZZ TOP and The Pretenders. After successfully supporting The Who, a personal call from Roger Daltrey lead to Nikki and Been joining Daltrey, Alice Cooper, Paul Rodgers, Peter Frampton and a few more rock gods on The British Rock Symphony Tour. The band toured the UK, Europe and Australia with the Orchestra, making a huge impression with their interpretation of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven. Their first performance at The Royal Albert Hall is a key moment in Nikki and Beens' lives. Roger held up both their arms and said to the audience who were going crazy, "What d'ya reckon then? Nikki Lamborn has the best female rock voice since Janis Joplin and I know what I'm talking about, I knew Janis." "After The Rock Symphony Tour ended in Australia, we decided to stay awhile and write some songs," explains Been. "We did a Thelma and Louise, rented a car and drove across the country drinking tequila in small bottles. "The money had run out by the time we reached Sydney, but luckily it was around the time of The Olympics and there were lots of people to entertain. Our busking skills paid for the song-writing trip and some of those songs are on our latest album, Surprise!" Nikki's powerful presence and strong vocals has been described as Tina Turner and Robert Plant rolled into one. Her incredible voice came under the spotlight while coaching a Cambridge choir girl in the ways of rock for Channel 4's Faking It series. Been, keyboard player and occasional guitarist, is the main composer behind the songs that together with Nikki's voice, make Never the Bride unique. Other band members include Murray Gould on guitar, who has played with Elton John, Dido and Faithless, and David Levy on bass, who has backed Rory Gallagher and Bonnie Tyler amongst others. Drummer Richie Newman's previous gigs have included Steve Marriott, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee and Sam Brown. As a response to their growing fanbase worldwide, the band have recorded a DVD rockumentary, entitled For Richer For Poorer, highlighting life for a rock band on the road both at home and abroad. The band are playing selected dates across the UK.

Link | 1 | 3 | Angel Pavement | Angel Pavement | United Kingdom | Angel Pavement | Angel Pavement were a late 60's sunshine pop outfit from York, England. There sound was equal parts psychedelia and pop/rock in the best Hollies/Zombies/Beatles manner. The band, which took its name from a 1930 novel by J.B. Priestley , himself a Yorkshireman, was assembled by guitarist/songwriter Alfie Shepherd out of the remnants of a soul-based outfit, Wesley Hardin's Shotgun Package, with Paul Smith (lead vocals), Dave Smith (guitar), Graham Harris (bass), and Alan Reeve (drums) (later replaced by Mike "Candy" Candler). They quickly developed an effective pop-oriented psychedelic sound, similar to what the Hollies were doing on Evolution and Butterfly, and the Zombies generated on Odessey & Oracle, with lush harmonies. They managed to build a large following in their native York and this gave them a thirst to try cracking the competitive London Club Scene. The group's attempt to crack the London club scene coincided with their starting work on a debut album at Morgan Studios. In early 1969 just as the band set to work on there debut album they received an offer to play a series of gigs ,for a few days, in Mexico City. The boys took up the offer and flew to Mexico where there "few days stay" turned into five months! The band did finally return to London and were able to pick up work on the album, a process interrupted by Dave Smith's departure (and his replacement by John Cartwright, who played guitar and trumpet). Finally a pair of singles, "Baby You've Gotta Stay" and "Tell Me What I've Got to Do," were released through Fontana Records, but failed to elicit any serious chart action. A third single and the announcement of their forthcoming LP all ended up "Missing In Action", mainly due to disputes between guitarist Alfie Shepherd and the studio's publishing arm. The studio producer eventually put the final nail in the coffin, and the band broke up at the end of 1970. Candler went on to join [a710569] and the John Coppin and his band, and Shepherd wrote songs and attempted to do a musical adaptation of The Wind in the Willows, while the others exited the business altogether. In 2005, Wooden Hill Records issued Maybe Tomorrow, the first-ever release of nearly two-dozen songs from those long-ago Morgan sessions by Angel Pavement. The 1969 Wind in the Willows project was finally released on CD in 2009, digitally remastered with extra demo songs, on the Wooden Hill label.

Link | 2 | 2 | Afel Bocoum | Afel Bocoum | Mali | Afel Bocoum | Singer and guitarist from Mali, born 1955. The Niger is one of the mightiest rivers in Africa, stretching 2500 miles in a great curve that extends east to west from Guinea to Mali, before turning south at the "Great Bend" to flow into the country of Niger. It is on the banks of this "Great Bend" in Mali that a vast network of ancient cities and empires once reigned over West Africa and where today a diverse population of farmers, fishermen, and nomadic cattle herders rely on the river's resources to survive in the harsh desert climate. By the banks of the river lies the small desert town of Niafunké, home to both the legendary musician Ali Farka Touré and his protégé, Afel Bocoum, who is rapidly becoming one of the most powerful voices of the region. Together with his band Alkibar, meaning "Messenger of the Great River" in the Sonrhai language, Bocoum uses the river as an inspiration and guide, creating a sound steeped in tradition that captures the voice of the people and their relationship to the land. Bocoum worked with Ali Farka Touré and his group ASCO for over thirty years, since the age of 13, during which time he made a fundamental contribution to the distinctive sound that helped put the village of Niafunké on the map and its music in homes throughout the world. Bocoum's haunting vocals and acoustic guitar acted as a natural compliment to the pulsating electric guitar and guttural voice of his "tonton" (the affectionate word for uncle) and mentor Touré. His collaborations with Touré are most remarkably displayed on the album The Source with songs like "Inshana Macina" and "Dofana," as well as on the European and North American tours that have brought Bocoum out of his mentor's shadow and into his own spotlight. This transition was consolidated with the recording of Bocoum's first album, Alkibar, in an abandoned agricultural centre on the outskirts of Niafunké in 1997. In 1978, Afel Bocoum finished his studies at a government agricultural school and began working as an agricultural development worker. This gave him further opportunity to travel the region and see first-hand the progress of development in Mali, a country plagued by a long history of drought, poverty and war that has tested the stamina of its people. Throughout its history, a special emphasis has been laid on cultural diversity in the advancement of the nation, and music has proved a powerful and motivating tool to inspire integration and communication across ethnic boundaries, helping to create a national identity Bocoum places questions of diversity at the core of his work, singing in a blend of the different ethnic languages, rhythms and melodies of the region. This comes naturally to him as he is of mixed parenthood with a Sonrhai father and Peulh mother. Born in Niafunké, he grew up speaking both languages, but it wasn't until he began writing music that he sought to advance his skills in Tamaschek the language of the Toureg, as well as Bambara. He explains, "sometimes you just find that certain ideas are expressed best in a certain language, and one must also remember that the spoken word is a music in itself. When I can speak to some people with melodies, some with language and some with rhythms, I can reach a wider audience by interchanging them - making different combinations and conveying different messages." The more he immersed himself in his music, the more Bocoum realized that his skills could be used to greater effect working with the community as a youth mentor and musical director directly involved in community activities. "In the countryside in Mali, we don't go to the cinema or read the newspapers; but we all listen to music. Music is the most important means of getting information across. So I feel a strong responsibility to speak the truth when I sing because I know people will heed what I say," remarks Bocoum. As an established and respected musician and member of the community, he strives to combine philosophical commentary on society today with an active participation in community activities such as the Flamme de la Paix - the commemorative ceremony that recreates a pioneer burning of weapons marking the end of the Tuareg rebellion in 1996. By playing at such events, Bocoum hopes to influence others to take their future in their own hands. "Africa has spent too long relying on others to solve its problems. It is time that we listen to each other and create our own solutions." He does this eloquently in a style reminiscent of the "desert blues" sound of Ali Farka Touré, but conveys a stripped down version to reveal the roots of the music. More firmly focused on the acoustic and traditional sounds of the surrounding cultures, he uses a one- stringed fiddle (njarka), a two-stringed guitar (njurkel) and calabash percussion with his acoustic guitar and impressive vocals - that intertwine fluid melodies and circular rhythms, inducing an image of the ebb and flow of the forces of the river and desert that surrounds them. An introspective mood is created, wrapped within social commentary against greed and arranged marriage, as well as encouraging the need to respect your elders. As Bocoum comments, "when an old man dies, it is as if a library has burned down. People have begun to forget and have become lazy - if we don't realize this today, tomorrow we will be lost." Released in 1999, Afel's debut solo album Alkibar finally gave him the space to reveal his own powerful talents as singer, guitarist, and composer (with his mentor's blessing). Being the first album ever recorded entirely on location in Niafunké, it's devoted entirely to local musicians. Afel's own band, also named Alkibar, accompany him with a beguiling take on Malian blues. As one would expect, most of the songs on the album address the various problems experienced in Malian society. In a country where television, cinema and newspapers are largely unavailable, Afel sees music as the best means of getting a message across, as he delivers these thoughtful and individual songs with his uniquely haunting and melodious voice. Afel and Alkibar's European tour in March 2001 saw them showcase the album's material with performances described by The Guardian as 'mesmeric'. Always keen to broaden his musical horizon, Afel collaborated with Blur front man Damon Albarn on the hugely popular Mali Music album in 2002. The project arose from Albarn's involvement with the charity Oxfam, for whom he traveled to Mali to work with local musicians. Also featured is kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté and members of his band, along with musicians such as reggae bassist Junior Dan, which resulted in an album containing a myriad of musical influences yet retaining the warmth and vitality that one would expect from a more conventional African recording. The album ultimately helped expose a whole new audience to African music, for which the project received widespread praise, in addition to this proceeds from the sale of the album have gone to help fund some of Oxfam's activities in Mali. The live dates that followed, including an extremely successful show at London's Barbican, were met with great acclaim. In June 2003 the pair re-united, as Damon made a guest appearance with Afel in front of 65000 people on the main stage at the Roskilde festival in Denmark. Following the Mali Music project Afel took part in another fascinating collaboration, called Desert Music. Along with his group Alkibar, Afel joined forces with a group of musicians from Rajasthan for a UK tour in May 2002. Unlike Mali Music, this collaboration was one of contrasting and yet shared experiences, exploring the sounds inspired by the desert: the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and the desert that surrounds Afel's native Niafunké. Throughout the summer of 2004 Afel toured with the Desert Blues project, which also featured the enigmatic Tuareg group Tartit and popular Malian singer-songwriter Habib Koité. The tour was conceived as a result of the popularity of the Desert Blues compilation albums, and the interest that they generated in the music and cultures of desert peoples. Afel, Tartit and Koité were chosen to participate as their music reflects the influence of the environment that they come from, with the idea being that these shows would give audiences a taste of the Sahara and neighbouring Sahel regions of Mali. In 2006 Afel returns to the international stage where he will be touring both solo and once again as part of Desert Blues, he will also release his new album 'Niger' through the Contre Jour label. Despite his growing acclaim, Bocoum remains a humble and gentle man who modestly redirects the energy of recognition to the importance of the welfare of his people and the inspiration they bring to his music. In the flowing melodies of the river and the pulsating rhythms of a harsh desert wind, there is no doubt that the legacy of Ali Farka Touré is in the right hands. With a remarkable finesse and a distinguishable talent, Afel Bocoum has proven to be a true "messenger of the Great River," and will be sure to carry the future of Mali's music into a new era.

Link | 0 | 4 | Ephraim Wegner | Ephraim Wegner | Ephraim Wegner | Ephraim Wegner He started his career as DJ of electronic music, but shifts in the nineties to composing his own pieces of music and developing digital and electronic music control systems. Here his main focus is concentrated on controlling the electronics directly - by visitors of interactive installations or by working together with other musicians. Another important focus in developing electronic music is the quality of the sound itself, from which oscillations result different sound characteristics. Already existing, recorded noises and sound processes play a decisive role - for deconstruction as well as for simulation. He operates mainly in the area of the Musique Concrète, electroacoustics and New Music. Up to now there were numerous cooperations with other musicians and ensembles (among others Alexander Grebtschenko, ensemble chronophonie, ensemble alarm, Guillaume Chastel and Skug). He created a lot of musical performances or installations e.g. at the ZKM, Art´s Birthday - an event of the SWR or during the Baden-Württemberg theatre days. Furthermore the artist composes music for documentaries, art films and short movies as well as for theatre plays. The group featured 3/4 of [a=Rites Of Spring] (Guy Picciotto, Eddie Janney, and Brendan Canty) joined by former [a=Faith (3)]/[a=Embrace (2)] guitarist Michael Hampton. To make room for Hampton, Janney moved from his traditional position of guitarist to bassist. The band played 6 shows together, appeared on one compilation, and recorded an album. Following the recording, the group ceased practicing for reasons even the band appears to be unsure of, although Janney's alleged unhappiness playing bass is rumoured to have played some role. [l=Dischord Records] had expressed interest in the band, but with the group's split the record was shelved, as Dischord was attempting to shed its reputation for releasing posthumous albums. In 1999, Dischord finally issued the album, now titled "1986", on CD.

Link | 1 | 3 | Bin-Jip | Bin-Jip | Bin-Jip | Three young musicians are behind the odd-sounding name Bin-Jip. They took their time to go official. Before their first public appearance in 2010 they worked for more than a year perfecting their tunes, which can be described as more eclectic, modern and experimental than their previous projects, while still remaining song-centric. Bin-Jip is a very democratic community, where the musicians are almost peers in writing, arranging the songs and being producers of the project. They not only contribute with their own instruments, but they shape the songs’ structure, sounds and effects together. Their debut album Enter was released in fall 2010 by their own label LAB6 in Hungary and by Whereabouts Records in Japan. At this time and during the following tour Zsolt Kaltenecker was also a member of Bin-Jip. Enter won the Alternative Album of the Year 2011 Fonogram Award in Hungary. The name “Bin-Jip” originates from the Korean motion picture, which is a well-liked movie of the members. The strange story of the movie took place in apartments and rooms showing similarity with the band’s history, which was born in Andrew J’s living-room. That is where the songs were written and the musicians became a band. Following the departure of Zsolt Kaltenecker in July 2012, Bin-Jip have been playing as a trio. Link | 3 | 1 | Di Naye Kapelye | Di Naye Kapelye | Hungary | Di Naye Kapelye | Yiddish culture in east Europe today is but a dim shadow of its history and legacy, but it is not dead. Jewish communities exist – in diminished numbers – and Jewish life continues, not the least in the memories of an older generation who remember a world which spoke Yiddish. Di Naye Kapelye means "The New Band" in Yiddish. We play old-time Yiddish music from not so long ago. This is music for dancing, for singing, for celebrating, and for remembering. Di Naye Kapelye approaches klezmer music as a living east European folk music tradition, not as nostalgia. Performances are both energetic and informative, with dance music from east Europe -- particularly Hungary, Romania and Moldova, Yiddish folk song, and more recently, reinventions of Hasidic traditional song, all played with attention to each particular regional style. Formed in 1994 through a number of fortuitous circumstances, many involving liberal quantities of palinka –Hungarian plum brandy – at marathon Hungarian folk dances, founding member Bob Cohen assembled an international group of musicians devoted to digging for the roots of Yiddish music in the Carpathian region. But they didn’t go looking in museums. Fragments turned up in old recordings, were learned from gypsy fiddlers, and confirmed by Jewish folk still living here. Is this how this goes? What instruments would have been used? How did people dance? What did people sing? A Naye Kapelye concert is a tour of the places, moods, emotions, tastes and smells of a Jewish celebration. It brings you to the rabbi's table, it speaks of forbidden dancing with Moldavian "sharletankes", it speaks of whiskey and the misery of life in the Russian army. Cohen himself began collecting Jewish music in Hungary and Romania in the 1980s as an extension of his involvement in the Hungarian tanchaz or "dance house" movement. Based on field recordings, interviews, and historic recordings, Di Naye Kapelye recreates the sound of the many non-commercial Jewish bands who served Jewish communities in Europe as late as the 1970s. In Hungary, and particularly in Transylvania, Gyspies commonly played music for Jewish communities, and members of Di Naye Kapelye continue to do extensive field research among elderly Gypsy and Jewish musicians, recording and often playing with their teachers, carrying this living tradition into the 21st century. But tradition does not imply stuffiness: Di Naye Kapelye sees tradition as a viable, alternative aesthetic for today. Di Naye Kapelye is as at home playing in alternative music clubs as they are playing for Jewish weddings and Jewish old-age homes in Hungary. Di Naye Kapelye is available for concerts, festivals, weddings and other simchas, as well as other collaborations. Bob Cohen (violin, mandolin, koboz, cumbus, flutes, Carpathian drum, vocals). Born in New York City into a Yiddish-speaking family, Bob came to Hungary in 1988 to research the traditional Jewish musical repertoire of the Carpathian region. Bob formed Di Naye Kapelye to present Carpathian klezmer music in its most authentic form. A member of the Jewish Music Research Center at Budapest's ELTE University, Bob has done extensive field research in klezmer and Yiddish music in Eastern Europe, the United States, and Israel. A founding member of the Budapester Klezmer Band, Bob has also performed and toured with Budowitz. He has served as musical consultant for numerous productions and has arranged music for theater and film, most notably the work of Miklos Jancso and the film "Jacob the Liar". Yankl Falk (clarinet, vocals) performs with Di Naye Kapelye on most European tours. A traditional Jewish cantor and clarinetist from Portland, Oregon, Yankl first came to Budapest as music director for a production of the classic Yiddish play "Dybbuk." Yankl is recognized for his soulful interpretations of Yiddish song and Hasidic chant. Yankl "belts out Hasidic liturgical melodies with the gravely punch of a Big Jay McShann" (Lev Liberman, The Jewish Review). His singing "returns us to a time when the power of the voice could tell a story and move an audience" (Ari Davidow, Klezmer Shack). Yankl has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, working with such groups as Oomph! and Don Byron's Music of Mickey Katz. For over 30 years, Yankl has produced the Sunday morning Yiddish Hour on KBOO-FM in Portland. Ferenc Pribojszki (cimbalom, Carpathian drum). Former cimbalomist of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, and member of the Bekes Band, Feri is a well-known musician in the Budapest “tanchaz” scene. He also plays Moldavian flutes and harmonica. Gyula Kozma (bass and koboz). Former member of the Okros band and the Csiky Band, “Kosztya” has played three-string Hungarian folk bass for decades in the “tanchaz” movement in Hungary. Kosztya's other musical interests include American blues and koboz - an archaic Romanian fretless lute. Antal Fekete (kontra), also known as “Puma”, was born in Gyula, Bekes County, in the “stormy corner” of the southern Hungarian Plains. Originally a dancer, he began playing the three-stringed Transylvanian “kontra” viola in the 1970s, and soon became one of the instrument’s undisputed masters. While a member of the Hungarian traditional band “Ujstilus”, Puma also carried out extensive field research and recording of older master musicians in Transylvania. He is also the most sought-after maker of kontras.

The band is placed in the diy-scene and that for some reasons. None of us can identify with the approaches and strategies of the modern and commercial musicbusiness. We still believe that the diy-musicscene is a place where we can avoid and fight racsim, sexism, homophobia and the cutting of an open minded lifestyle. We support the idea of a vegetarian/vegan sustenance. Lentic Waters are: Jojo, Julius, Sebi, Daniel & Maik

Link | 2 | 2 | Total Shutdown | Total Shutdown | United States | Total Shutdown | The crazed experimental rock of San Francisco's Total Shutdown first saw the light of day at a gig on February 14, 2000. Vocalist Bob Linder, bassist Nate Denver, guitarist Paul Costuros, drummer Pete Nguyen, and saxophonist Matt Hartman all play a variety of instruments besides their main ones and, individually, have been involved in everything from performance art to death metal. There first release came as a split 7" with Boxleitner on Thin the Herd Records and it earned a spot on Byron Coley's Top Ten singles of 2001 in the Village Voice. Compilation appearances and limited-edition CD-Rs followed before the one-sided 12" "Reflections" came out on blood-red vinyl and with silk-screened covers in 2002. Also that year saw the release of a 6 song 7" on the death grind label Life is Abuse. It was enough to draw the attention of the usually electronic-leaning label Tigerbeat6 and heavy noise label Load Records who co-issued the band's debut album in 2003 simple called The Album. In 2006 Thurston Moore and Byron Coley's Ecstatic Yod label released a live album with hand stenciled assembled and silkscreen covers simply called Total Shutdown Live. Total Shutdown's sound is like the Boredoms, Naked City, and Brutal Truth all in a mad race for the finish line. Hard jazz, thrash, and hardcore slap you in the face from the start with only short breaks for avant noodling and naïve melodies played on tinker-toy keyboards. Vocals are either Cookie Monster-styled growls or the screams and yelps that Eye from the Boredoms spits out. It would be easy to think John Zorn is their spiritual leader, but there's more of a party atmosphere than the rather serious saxophonist has ever attempted.
