Link | 1 | 1 | Rik Woldring | Rik Woldring | Netherlands | Rik Woldring | Rik Woldring Rik started playing records around 2001, first he was more into the pounding and harder side of techno. Influenced by Ricardo Villalobos he discovered the more housey and deeper tunes. Nowadays he likes to play old gems together with brand new stuff and he is always searching for undiscovered tracks. Rik is a big fan of longer sets, especially in the morning hours. That’s why Rik has earned his credits as the organizer of the well-known Voltt after parties. Those who have been there know the crazy mornings at numerous locations in Amsterdam. Swing, swing, swing, is all we can do when Rik gets in control behind the decks. He should be seen as an artist who understands the new direction of house and how it can be used to create a good and girl friendly atmosphere on the dance floor in an underground kind of way. His style is very broad; it goes from slow and groovy house to more uplifting techno and everything in between. That’s why he is resident of the infamous Carnivale parties at AIR where you can hear him from his techno side. Next to that he is also resident at Zanadu, a new concept of Carnivale Group in AIR, where he plays more house and disco records. Since 2010 Rik is linked to Klopfgeist Records which results in playing at their national and international label nights. At present, Rik is still learning the tricks of producing music and he’s learning fast. His first release was a remix of an Andreas Bergman track called The Big Hangover on Klopfgeist Records. His second release Stop That Bus came out last summer on BlaBla records as a part of their Summer Sampler. Both releases received some very good feedback. That’s why everyone has high expectations for his upcoming release, Disco Pussy EP on Klopfgeist Records, which will come out very soon, together with an amazing remix from Shaun Reeves. In the meanwhile he remixed tracks from Marko Nastić and Navar. Rik is one of the driving forces behind the new label Carnivale Music, which has resulted in a great release from Marko Nastić with a an amazing remix from David Labeij and will have upcoming releases from Koen Lebens and Specker. His latest project is a collaboration with Malbetrieb. They both have a recognizable style but blended together it has something new and sounds surprisingly fresh. They didn’t get unnoticed by Awakenings and therefore they are very proud to play their annual festival this summer. Watch out for his new club night called Slow Jams! This will be a night full of slow but grooving music.

Link | 1 | 1 | Shark Vegas | Shark Vegas | United Kingdom | Shark Vegas | Founding members, Mark Reeder and Alistair Gray decided to change their bands name and image after they gained two new members, Leo Walter & Helmut Wittler (previously from "popper" band Soif de la Vie) a few weeks before a New Order tour of Europe in early 1984. They recorded one single "You Hurt Me" which was released on Factory Records (FAC 111) and on the Toten Hosen's label "Totenkopf" (TOT 11) in Germany. The demo for this single was originally recorded at Harris Johns studio in Berlin and these rough tapes were eventually taken to Cologne to Conny Planks studio, to be mixed and co-produced by New Order's Bernard Sumner during the few off days during their tour. However, the Cologne recording session was a complete fiasco. The studio engineer had suffered a serious back problem a few days before and had to lie in front of the mixing desk on a specially constructed bed. In-between screams of agony, he shouted his engineering instructions to Bernard. Feeling the need for a update for the B-side, Mark, Alistair and Bernard then went to England and remixed the track (it became "You Hurt Me... but now your flesh lies rotting in hell") for the Factory version of the single for the UK release. Bernard played some additional guitar and A Certain Ratio's Donald Johnson added some backing vocals. Mark asked his friend Mark Farrow to design the artwork for both English and German versions of this single and they remain today as two examples of his earliest record sleeve designs. Although this single went virtually unnoticed in the UK, it became very popular throughout the indie clubs and gay-disco's of the USA and it gave the band a cult following.

It was the KRAFTWERK/RADIO ACTIVITY single and since then, he became deeply attracted to electronic music. He started his career by mixing in 1988 for several private parties in London and the suburbs for about 2 years and played at the Kho Pangan 1990 New Year party. Afterward, he went to Japan and worked every weekend as a resident DJ at the Razzle Dazzle. Therefore, he started a professional career as an international DJ. Since the beginning of the 90's, Xavier Morel has played all around Europe, Asia (mainly Japan), Australia, USA or South America. Japan has always been his favorite country for mixing. He has developed an extensive knowledge and a genuine technique that makes his mixing very special. In 1994, He worked as a Label Manager with Simon Gahary (Blue Room A&R) and for Sony Music France. Since 1995, Xavier Morel has produced several tracks on various projects, mainly with Juno Reactor, Prime Suspect, Section X, Eat Static, Fuel, Carcharodon Megalodon. Link | 1 | 1 | The Liabilities | The Liabilities | United Kingdom | The Liabilities | Rising from Bognor Regis on the UK’s south coast in early 2007, THE LIABILITIES are a four piece punk rock band with a penchant for breakneck speed, beautiful melodies, close to the edge lyrics and slogans such as “slut infested drug punk for kids”. Noticeably influenced by the wave of Californian bands from the 1990’s, they released their debut record “Not For Your Nan” shortly followed by their first full length album “Failure Is Not An Option” on Gurnard Records, the bands self-funded label. By October of 2007 the band were playing extensively throughout the UK to promote the releases. After a few years of instability in the drumming department the band settled and now possess an established punk rock recipe for destruction as they are arguably the fastest, funniest idiots on the UK Punk Rock scene (self-proclaimed). To cement this reputation the energetic posse embarked on recording their second full length album “Malignant Humour”, released again on Gurnard records in February 2013. To promote the record the band embarked on extensive UK tours and also took their first steps in mainland Europe with two small tours, as well as the usual selection of one off shows and weekenders. In their time The Liabilities have enjoyed packing venues alongside such punk rock heavyweights as The Voodoo Glowskulls, Leftover Crack, Spunge, The US Bombs, The Filaments, Mad Sin, Citizen Fish, Assorted Jelly Beans, The Skints, Mouthwash, The Infested, Vanilla Pod, Wonk Unit, Jaya The Cat, The UK Subs, GBH, The Vibrators, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Beerzone, JB Conspiracy and the sensational Peter Andre. Now the band embark on a new chapter of their illustrious career by signing to Morning Wood Records, where they are set to deliver themselves to superstardom with another full length album set for release in summer of 2015. So watch out for the Chunks (Chav punks) in a town near you soon.

Link | 1 | 1 | Shift Work | Shift Work | Shift Work | Shift Work can be summarised without hyperbole or the tenuous reference points of desperate marketers. When asked by The Quietus exactly what the partnership comprises, Mark Harris cut to the chase: “Johnny Rivo, myself, mid-priced synths, low-end vintage effects, endless improvising…” Working from their hand-built (read: home-made) studio in North London, once a stable for horses, the pair make uncompromising music in a compromising place, building throbbing tracks with analogue kit and busted-up amps. They also break with dance and electronic norms in at least two ways. A respect for the need to both fill and leave space in musical arrangements; a clear disregard for genre boundaries, veering from punchy techno and acidic electro to scuzzy leftfield house in one fell swoop. In a scene defined by rigid sonic structures, rules are bent but the results remain useful and usable. Hence Resident Advisor, Juno, Bleep and The Ransom Note fawning over the first Shift Work EP, Scaled To Fit. And the follow up, their first on Houndstooth, Document II, furthers their mechanistic yet artful vision. This is otherworldliness aimed at dark rooms, dancing freaks and those who demand more than basic thuds, unnecessary bells and throwaway whistles; a remit plenty could learn from. Until they do however, at least you know where to find it in practice.

Merge the rhythm and vibrance of Munich’s hip hop clubs with the grime and attitude of Thessaloniki’s back-alley indie bars, put some berlin party flavor in, to get an idea on how to categorize Local Suicide: unique soulful fusion of nu-disco, deep-house, jacking acid and dark techno. As DJs they've played all over the EU and USA whilst holding down day jobs in the music industry (Vamparela is a promoter for techno/house promo agency Pullproxy / Brax Moody is label manager at UK labels Mute & Domino) and running one of the top 10 independent music & lifestyle blogs in germany with 40+ international editors. Mystic Fugu Orchestra only ever released one album, [r=1094664], and it was planned as the first one in the series of Zorn/Eye releases for Tzadik in 1995. This disc mimics some mysterious "newly discovered" old Kabbalah recordings, and a heavy layer of surface noise was added in the mix, to imitate the sound of 78 rpm record. Other duo collaborations of John Zorn and Yamantaka Eye on Tzadik are: [r=893070] (1995) [r=884017] (2004) Volume Ten in John Zorn's "50th Birthday Celebration" series (2005)

Link | 1 | 1 | Fatal Aim | Fatal Aim | Russia | Fatal Aim | The band “Fatal aim” was founded in June 2003 by keyboard player/ composer Artyom “Tranquilizer” and vocalist/ author of lyrics Ekaterina Agrat. The trend of music which musician play is synth/ electro/ gothic. In 2004 they recorded promo of four songs that were estimated as good compositions. These songs were rotated on the radio “Echo Moskvy” (Moscow Echo) in the sound program "Project 91.2". Just before the gigs they decided to add the guitar. So at the end of 2004 the 3rd musician Vadim Gryzlov came to the band. So this membership took part in the Moscow fest “Gotomania”, Saint-Petersburg fest “Walpurgis night” and gothic-party all over the Russian cities. They performed wit such bands as Otto Dix, Roman Rain, T.3.R. Shenight etc. Moreover the band worked at the whole album as well. As a result they released the album “Winter saga” on the label Irond Ltd in June 2007. As well in the disc there is a multimedia cell containing the information about the band, lyrics and photos. Although the success of the album and urgency of the compositions, it became clear that there were a lot of faults in the work of the vocalist. The main solution of this issue was the change of the vocalist. After short search of the new vocalist for “Fatal aim” Larisa Sitnikova, the actress of the Tula Philharmonic Society, became a member of the band. Then the band performed in different Tula and Moscow clubs and on the Aeronautics Championship of Russia. The new vocalist Larisa fitted with the band very harmoniously.

Link | 1 | 1 | Sukke | Sukke | Europe | European klezmer band | Sukke | SUKKE was founded to give its members a possibility to introduce their specific idea of klezmer music on one hand, and to work on old but also original Yiddish songs to bring them onto stage. SUKKE is platform for ideas its members were or are unable to perform in other projects. Since each musician collected large experiences in various ensembles and bands, it is possible to call SUKKE as a first European klezmer all-star band. SUKKE plays concerts, holidays, parties, weddings. Sanne Möricke (Akkordeon) studied music in Holland, klezmer accordion with Alan Bern and Willy Schwarz among others. She is a foundig member of Holland´s Di Kalles, probably the world´s first all-female klezmer band, which unfortunately ceased to exist in the summer of 2000. With their duo Khupe Möricke and clarinetist Christian Dawid published their cd mit der Kale tantsn in 1999, a highly-acclaimed first recording of the duo (which is possible to order directly from the artists.) She was musician in the Staatstheater Bremen production of Brecht´s "Three-Penny-Opera", and is a looked-after accordionist who played in several bands since she moved to Berlin in 2000. Heiko Lehmann (Kontrabaß & Gitarre) played with Berlin-based band Aufwind from 1988 to 1994 and recorded a cd with them. In 1994, Lehmann founded Golus storytheater (Toronto-Berlin) with Canadian writer Michael Wex and appeared as guest musician in various bands (for instance with Budowitz, Kapelye, Willy Schwartz, Chicago Klezmer Ensemble). Wex and Lehmann developed four plays, for which Lehmann wrote the music and which he translated into German, as well as Wex´s cult novel shlepping th exile. Lehmann writes radio plays, co-produces a kids' music theatre and directs. His first musical "die Meistersinger von Dlugaszow" was premiered in 2001. Merlin Shepherd (Klarinetten) has been Musical Director for The Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, London. He works as Music Co-ordinator for KlezKamp USA, KlezFest London and taught at KlezFest St Petersburg, KlezFest Evpatoria in Ukraine and KlezKanada. He is one of the world's leading players of traditional East European Klezmer Clarinet style, and apart from his own ensembles he has worked and toured throughout Britain and Europe with Budowitz, Klezmer brass allstars and Burning bush, as well as a Istanbul tour with Heiko Lehmann and his trio New presumption in 1994. |

Link | 1 | 1 | Thomas Urv | Thomas Urv | Bergen | Thomas Urv | Thomas Paulsen Thomas Urv is one of the key players of the norwegian techno scene after having played different radioshows and nearly every club, festival and illegal rave in Norway, ever since he purchased a pair of Technics decks 14 years old, back in 1990. He has promoted countless clubnights and big events around Norway, presenting numerous international techno acts and djing alongside more. Artists like Luke Slater, Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Surgeon, Carl Cox, Richie Hawtin, Paul Woolford, Dj Hell, Dave Clarke, Mathew Jonson, Robert Hood, Tiesto, Slam, Speedy J, Kevin Saunderson, Oliver Ho, Marcel Dettmann, Marco Carola, Radio Slave, Ben Sims, James Ruskin, CJ Bolland, Claude Young… The list goes on to include many of the biggest techno acts that has yet made it up north to little Norway. Over the years his touring schedule has taken him all across Europe and Canada, performing at clubs such as Fabric in London and Berghain in Berlin, as well as festivals such as ADE and Bestival. Known for his fast and complex mixing skills with old school cutting and scratching, still prefering vinyl decks to computerized mixing. In the spring of 2014 Thomas and long time friend Miss Mostly launched the label branch of his long running, legendary techno club PLOINK and have to date released six EPs. PLOINK celebrates 20 years in 2016 but till then Thomas will be busy in the studio, building up material for future releases. You'll find him spending his weekends djing or skiing the norwegian mountains, a seasoned lover of the offpist freeriding, a feeling recognized in his sets. Words: Rob Hansen

Link | 1 | 1 | or-if-is | or-if-is | Or-If-Is | Dave Levison Originally from Los Angeles, he was playing, writing, and recording music by age 13. While experimenting in his home studio, he picked up various instruments while with bands that ranged from metal, glitter rock, jazz, punk, and funk, sharing the bill with artists such as Nina Hagen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Redd Kross. After living and traveling in Europe, he returned to California to study both classical and experimental composition, including the classical music of India and Indonesian Gamelan, at the California Institute of the Arts. It was there--and as an assistant to film composer/synthesist Michael Boddicker--that he became inspired by the power and potential of both the recording studio and electronic music, a genre open to fusion, crossing boundaries, and a way to simultaneously combine his interest in music and sound design. Serious about his craft, he's drawn to drollery, musical surprises, contrasts, layers, and textures. In addition to writing, performing (friends claim that he plays 147 instruments and gadgets), and producing original music, other credits include producing other artists' material, plus music, remixing and sound design for film, cartoons, video games, and live theater.

Link | 1 | 1 | Troubled Gardens | Troubled Gardens | Troubled Gardens | Troubled Gardens was a post-punk trio active in Washington, DC from 1984 to 1985. The original lineup included Dan Joseph (guitar, synthesizer and drum machine programming), Eric Anderson (bass) and Colin Sears (vocals and synthesizer). Sears would leave the band before their first public performance and appears as vocalist on the band's entry on The Halloween Cassette compilation released by WGNS Recordings (1984). Joseph and Anderson continued to develop instrumental material for some months before being joined by drummer Don Zinzell, completing the lineup of record on their one and only release, the EP Eden Revisited (Fountan of Youth Records, Bethesda, MD, 1985). The band performed a number of concerts in the Washington, DC area sharing bills with such bands as Gray Matter, Madhouse, Rude Buddha, Grey March and Glorious Din. While Troubled Gardens was ostensibly an instrumental band, guest vocalists would occasionally join them in performance on one or more songs. For the Eden Revisited sessions the band invited several vocalists – Joe Aronstamn and Marc Lambiotte of Grand Mal, Zach Fuller of Scythian, and the DC scenester known simply as "James" – to prepare lyrics for specific tracks. Their efforts are heard on three of the album's six tracks. Troubled Gardens abruptly disbanded in the fall of '85 as two thirds of the band left town to attend college.
Link | 1 | 1 | dumdum Score | dumdum Score | United Kingdom | Dumdum Score | Northumberland (UK) based dumdum Score are Christopher Simpson & Michael Fielding. The duo formed in the mid 1980's to develop their own experimental blend of no wave, aleatoric, avant-garde music which they describe as the non-genre of 'Jar'. Long dissatisfied with the straightjacket of conventional instruments and the predictable 4/4 verse chorus aspect of Western 'popular' music they set out on a path of discovery that would free them from these constraints. They developed a series of musical ideas out of context with each other which would take their cue more from surrealist art than established and well trodden musical methods. Their debut album produced in just two weeks because of the limited time allowed to them by NMW (who owned the equipment), consisted of 14 musical sketches and was given the working title Audio Sheep. It was subsequently released in December 1987 by NMW and distributed by Red Rhino ( a subsidiary of Rough Trade). The pair lived and worked in isolation without ever being involved in any 'music scene' and discovered sound techniques that were recorded with self - manufactured instruments, tape loops and technologies forming the basis of their freeform abstract pieces (or) 'Musical imaging‘. The duo often employ the use of physiological time' as apposed to strict 'timing' , a concept explored by eminent musical pioneers such as Charles Ives, and as such, the conflict between abstract and the predictable became the very essence of the DDS sound. Their approach to music composition is always an unrehearsed style often accompanied by one take vocals, again freeing them from the constraints of the 'over polished' and contrived, with the emphasis firmly placed on the musical 'picture' that their pieces convey. They long held the belief that their earlier work had been out of step with the times, unfinished and unfulfilled and having embarked on several projects unrelated to music ,it was noticed that similar encouraging ideas were slowly being adapted into the current music scene. In 2014 the decision was made to re-explore their founding principals and to set about formulating new music. What emerges on their new album Audio sheep 'redux' is a re-affirming of those beliefs. The album introduces the notion that music should be a multi-layered picture in which the listener can explore a rich tapestry of movement and questions the purpose of rhythm / timing and the perceived 'need' to repeat a musical passage, whilst retaining the 'jar' between the predictable and the avant-garde. Examples of musical imaging are found throughout the album but particularly noticeable on 'Slab' with its stark industrial landscaped angst recalling a world long since demolished by 'progress', whilst Swells and flows reflects a world of religious and ethnic intolerance, and Cento describes the human spirit engulfed in media propaganda. This is music for music listener’s, something to think about, promote discussion, rage against and enjoy in equal measures. It jabs at the very essence as to what music is. Audio sheep takes the listener through a Kaleidoscopic journey ending with the multi media ‘Heads of Tulips’ an interactive experimental piece that employs the open access technology of Youtube to provide the work’s other components.

Link | 1 | 1 | Mr. Encrypto | Mr. Encrypto | Mr. Encrypto | Bruce Gordon (11) Bruce was born in Southern California when the surf was up and the days were good and full of sunshine. When he was 10, his family moved from the warm California sun to the Bad Bad Lands of Australia. Lennon-McCartney melodies and Brian Wilson harmonies were supplanted by wobble boards and tuneless flamin’ jungle music. Eventually, the need for guitars brought the young Bruce back to America. Specifically, to Phoenix, and the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery. (It’s not a religious term — it translates roughly as, “wooden-stringed-instrument-building.”) In the '80s, Grand Junction, Colorado was not normally considered one of the hotbeds of new wave rock, but it was — it's just that nobody ever heard the music that came out of there. Nevertheless, Shoblit and the Bush Pilots were two bands which were at the forefront of the G.J. new wave scene, and Gordon was a key figure in both bands. It is undisputable that songs like "Solitary Confinement", "Cans and Bottles", "Another Good Year" and "Alienate Yourself" have influenced countless artists ever since. That is to say, all those artists could never be counted. Gordon returned to Southern California in the late '80s and formed the Cyphers, a pop/rock/demolition foursome which cut a swath of broken guitar strings and splintered harmonies across the L.A. music scene. It was during this time that Bruce wrote the score to the beloved cult film, SHOCK! SHOCK! SHOCK! (Rhino Home Video). Gordon has resurfaced in the new millennium as the writer and co-producer of the new album by Mr. Encrypto, HERO AND VILLAIN! (In fact, some claim Mr. Encrypto and Gordon are one and the same! Of course, if this were true, it would mean Gordon played every instrument and sang every vocal on the album. Surely, this stretches plausibility to the breaking point!)

Link | 1 | 1 | Tamalone | Tamalone | Netherlands | Tamalone | Tamalone Tamalone is an obscure progressive rock band formed in Holland in mid 1970s. They released a single album in 1979 named "New Acres", recorded at Crossroad studios in July 1979. The band is influenced a lot by JETHRO TULL, Songs from the Wood era, with nice folky arrangements, low key elements, woodwind and some good guitar giving "New Acres" a pleasant atmosphere. The main man of the band, vocalist Cees van Aanholt is sometimes one with Ian Anderson, but the compositions and the flute arrangements make this a very enjoyable album that must be heard by a wider public. Even though they are long gone they are not forgotten.

Link | 1 | 1 | Maria Dunn | Maria Dunn | Edmonton | Maria Dunn | Maria Dunn is a Canadian singer-songwriter. She has been described as "an arrestingly powerful singer-songwriter who writes great historical and social commentary." Her music blends Celtic folk with North American bluegrass and country influences. Born in Scotland, she moved as a child with her family to Ontario. She has made Edmonton, Alberta her base since the 1990s. As a child she studied classical piano and she later studied psychology at the University of Alberta. While a student at U of A she started a folk music program on the campus radio which she continued for 12 years. Immersing herself in folk music in this way, she gravitated towards writing her own songs. Her first album, From Where I Stand, was released in 1998 and her appearance at the 2000 Stan Rogers Folk Festival brought her to the attention of an East Coast Canadian audience that embraced her Celtic sound. Since then she has released three other albums including the Juno nominated For a Song (2002). She appears at folk festivals around the world, often performing with The McDades. In 2003 she appeared at the BBC Scotland "Live From Celtic Connections" in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2008 she commenced a tour of the Netherlands. She appeared in the 2002 documentary CKUA: Radio Worth Fighting For.[6] Many artists have used her songs such as Niamh Parsons (The Peddler), Bob Bossin (We Were Good People), Aengus Finnan (Orphan Hand), The Outside Track (Poor Lonesome Hen) and others.
