Link | 0 | 1 | L'Arpeggiata | L'Arpeggiata | L'Arpeggiata | Founded in 2000, L'Arpeggiata is a French ensemble directed by [a=Christina Pluhar]. Its members are some of today's best European soloists: [a=Christina Pluhar], [a=Lucilla Galeazzi], [a=Marcello Vitale], David Mayoral, [a=Richard Myron], Anna Dego, Doron Sherwin, Veronika Skuplik, [a=Alessandro Tampieri], Eero Palviainen and Charles Edouard Fantin. Their aim is to revive an almost unknown repertoire and to focus their artistic work especially on French, Italian and Neapolitan music from the beginning of the 17th century. The bases of L'Arpeggiata are instrumental improvisations, a different approach to singing centered on the development of vocal interpretation influenced by traditional music, and the creation and staging of attractive shows. Since its foundation, L'Arpeggiata has received incredible response and critical aclaim for their live performances and recordings from both the audience and critics. Their recordings include: La Villanella dedicated to the music of [a=Giovanni-Girolamo Kapsberger], Homo Fugit Velut Umbra devoted to Stefano Landi, La Tarantella, which proposes an encounter between baroque and traditional musicians, All'Improvviso, Rapressentatione di Anima et di Corpo by Emilio de' Cavalieri and Los Impossibles with The King’s Singers as well as the Flamenco guitarist [a=Pepe Habichuela]. In 2006, Arpeggiata performed more than 50 concerts in the most prestigious venues in Europe and abroad which include London, Geneve, Tel Aviv, Austria and Belgium with several programs. These programs include Monteverdi's Il Ballo delle Ingrate, traditional Mediterranean music and music improvisation with jazz accents, in addition to the composer [a=Luigi Rossi] and others authors from the Italian XVII century.

Subsequent recordings have included an album of lullabies, My Arms Are A Cradle and an album, I Want Something, with guitarist Jon Scaife of American acoustic music group, Gypsy Reel. Currently based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Dunlop continues to perform in a duo with Scaife. Link | 0 | 1 | Professor Stretch | Professor Stretch | United Kingdom | Professor Stretch | Adrian Shortman Professor Stretch's early career was rooted in the hardcore scene. He was part of the trio that produced Dance Conspiracy's string-laden classic "Dub War" and he continued to record breakbeat tracks with old Dance Conspiracy partner DJ Pulse, including a successful remix of Alex Reece's "Feel The Sunshine". His training was initially formal - playing the piano from the age of five but he soon swapped the prospect of studying music at university for late night spots on various pirate radio stations. During this time he met Chad Jackson of 1990 sample heavy anthem "Hear The Drummer Get Wicked" fame, and 1987 DMC World Champion. He hung out in Jackson's studio, learning the ropes and exploring his massive collection of hip hop and soul records. He then joined forces with manager/producer Ron Tom, a union which resulted in the initial development of the hugely successful All Saints and Sugarbabes. Stretch is more recently known for his production and writing as one of the two Underwolves. His abilities as a producer, writer, mix engineer and remixer are second to none. Worked with: Sugarbabes, All Saints, Gabrielle, Lightning Seeds, Eric Clapton

Link | 0 | 1 | Terry Bickers | Terry Bickers | United Kingdom | Terry Bickers | Terry Bickers English musician, born 6 September 1965 in Fulham, London, England, UK. The shimmery guitars of Terry Bickers stirred critics when the House of Love released their first album in 1988. [a=The House Of Love] were touted as future superstars, and the interlocking guitars of Bickers and vocalist [a=Guy Chadwick] combined [a=The Jesus And Mary Chain]'s ominous din with the folksy melancholy of [a=The Smiths]. However, the press were more enamored with the band than the public. Terry Bickers, formerly of Colenso Parade, joined the House of Love in 1986. Although Terry Bickers' stay in The House of Love was short-lived, his influence on noisy, dreamy British groups such as Catherine Wheel, Ride, and Adorable is undeniable. After Terry Bickers left the House of Love in late 1989, he married and became a father. In 1990, Terry Bickers formed [a=Levitation (2)] with [a=Laurence O'Keefe] (bass), Robert White (keyboards), Christian Hayes (guitars), and Dave Francolini (drums). As with the House of Love, Levitation entered the English music scene on a tidal wave of critical praise. Levitation was seen as progressive rock revivalists, but they were somewhat louder than their '70s predecessors. Terry Bickers' views on flying saucers, reincarnation, and other odd subject matters had a few reporters questioning his sanity. On May 14, 1993, Terry Bickers played his last concert with Levitation; he was replaced by [a=Steve Ludwin]. Terry Bickers then formed [a=Monkey 7]. In 2005, Terry Bickers miraculously returned to play with the House Of Love for the latest album "Days Run Away".

Link | 0 | 1 | Phalo Pantoja | Phalo Pantoja | Phalo Pantoja | Phalo Pantoja was born on 1922. He spent his youth in the old streets of Saint-Denis, near Paris. In 1991, he began to sharpen his writing after he listened to a friend rapping on a “Saxo” joint. His obsession for rap started at this moment, while he was watching the French classic Rap TV shows such as Sidney’s “Hiphop” or Rapline on M6 Channel. This Spanish Peruvian rapping French froggy has been influenced by most American artists : Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest, Primo, Spinna, Jaydee (RIP)… His addiction to crunchy sounds pushed him to use more and more vinyl samples and to use old vintage musical keyboards such as Prophet, Minimoog, Jupiter and Matrix synths, a long time before the hype for vintage gears crossed the street, leaving the sidewalks garbage to high end music shops racks… He also wanted to make a tribute to his influences because he thinks that a good artist must be proud and unbeatable about his roots. « Knowledge and culture are the biggest weapons of creation, that’s why Jazz, Soul and Funk will never be old school”.

Link | 0 | 1 | Adil Hiani | Adil Hiani | Morocco | turntablism | Adil Hiani | Adil Hiani There can be few artists attempting to bridge cultures through the power of music with quite the same impact as Adil Hiani. The Moroccan artist has been on a mission to unite the sounds of Western electronics with the traditional folk music of his homeland since 2009, when he helped launch Cosmo Records from his base in Casablanca. Since then he has rapidly developed both as a label manager and as an artist in his own right. He first found notoriety in Morocco from an early age, learning the trade as a DJ thanks to his cousin DJ Key, one of the leading lights in the country’s hip hop scene. From 2003, at the tender age of 14, he was regularly touring and refining his scratching and beat-juggling skills, and within a few years he had branched out to try his hand at production. Once the internet became more widely accessible in Morocco, his natural appetite for new sounds led him to discover all kinds of music, from jazz to blues and unsurprisingly on to electronic music. Early dalliances with funky house found him plenty of gigs, but as his knowledge and taste deepened towards more experimental kinds of club music, he quickly moved beyond the interests of the crowds he was playing to. The online connection provided the only outlet for his music for a number of years, while he refined his production skills and reached out to portals that might be interested in hosting his mixes. It was through this determined networking that Laurent Grumel, a Frenchman in Morocco, discovered Adil’s sound and pitched the idea for a record label that combined contemporary electronic artists with local Moroccan musicians in a cross-cultural collaboration, and so Cosmo Records was born. Alongside Driss & Mehdi they launched the project by inviting Argenis Brito to Casablanca to record the first release in the summer of 2009, and so the label grew from there to work with Masomenos, Rene Sandoval and Philip Bader, and Pier Bucci. Due to his location, international bookings were a challenge for Adil due to visa complications, until he moved to Toulouse to study in 2011. As a result of the connections he had forged through the label work, gigs soon materialized alongside Sonja Moonear and Dandy Jack in Lausanne and Geneva, and then across Europe from France and Spain to Italy and Greece. One of the defining gigs of this phase of his career was being invited to play the infamous Club Der Visionaere in Berlin in 2013, where he ended up playing for 11 hours straight. After three years living in Europe he ended his studies and returned to Casablanca to focus on developing his own music production as well as the sound of Cosmo Records. The label released its most ambitious project to date in 2015, celebrating five years of operation with artists such as San Proper, Radiq, Dandy Jack and Yapacc collaborating with Moroccan players such as Khansa Batma and Saad El Bouaamri. With his own productions sitting comfortably alongside these celebrated musicians, Adil continues to expand as an artist in his own right. Rather than lazily dropping samples of African and Eastern music into formulaic house and techno structures, he pushes his craft to deal in rhythmic arrangements influenced as much by the Far East as the music of his own country, seeking to create a true fusion of Eastern and Western cultures grounded in an innate understanding of sounds from all over the world. In this way his sonic identity goes against the grain, driven by an unquenchable passion for meaningful musical experience even when he could have taken an easier road to success a long time ago. words by Oli Warwick |

In 1980 Storey formed the pioneering industrial group Zoviet France, remaining a member until 1992; during that year, Storey issued the first Rapoon album, Dream Circle, its entrancing fusion of Indian ragas, African rhythms and experimental textures anticipating the evocative soundscapes of the many releases to follow. From the abstract to afro-beat, future funk, broken beat, real jazz and nu jazz, deep house and the new Philly sound, Julius and partners worked the non-4/4 end of the underground musical spectrum to significant critical acclaim, eventually landing on the cover of the Washington Post's Weekend Entertainment Guide as a 'must see in DC', and the [l=Grooved!strict] label which released a few DJ-mix compilation albums. Spring 2002 saw Julius making his debut on the [l=Umblu] label by the name of Tallinn 73. Together with fellow labelmate [a=Kalm], they issued a full-length spilt-CD "[r=39601]", much to critical acclaim, mixing broken beat with obscure jazz and pop samples from 60s. At the moment Julius is working on a solo follow-up due to be released sometime in the future.

Link | 0 | 1 | ORF Big Band | ORF Big Band | Austria | ORF Big Band | Around 1970, the Austrian Broadcasting Company was reformed, transforming itself into the innovative [l=ORF] and finally launching a contemporary pop and jazz station, Ö3. At the same time, the ORF Big Band developed from the core of the Fehring Orchestra, rejuvenated by talents like drummer [a=Erich Bachträgel]. It became an orchestra ready to meet all the needs of a modern broadcasting corporation; however, due to the ambitions and experiences of its leaders, [a=Erich Kleinschuster] and [a=Johannes Fehring], its emphasis remained on the production of first rate, big band jazz. In earlier years, ambitious Austrian jazz musicians had to go abroad to achieve recognition, but thanks to the existence of the ORF Big Band, consummate international jazz talents – like [a=Art Farmer] on flugelhorn and trumpet, or [a=Jimmy Heath] on soprano and tenor sax, or [a=Jimmy Woode] on double bass – were bound at least temporarily to Austria. The Orchestra existed from 1971 to 1982. They recorded a lot of libraries called "ORF Arbeitsplatten" that get sold for enormous prices on the collectors market.

Sothea managed to gain a great popularity in her entire native country in a short time. When after a devastating civil war, the Khmer Republic eventually declared capitulation on 17 April 1975, Sothea decided to focus her repertoire on patriotic songs to strengthen the minds of the citizens of the newly founded (Khmer Rouge-controlled) republic called "Democratic Kampuchea". In 1977 she was forced by revolutionary and then-leader Pol Pot himself to marry one of his personal assistants and reportedly died sometime in the last quarter of the very same year, aged about 29. However, the mystery of Sothea's actual death circumstances has always been the fuel for many (to a great extent far-fetched) conspiracy theories to date.

Sister of [a=Jeanne Loriod]. Wife of [a=Olivier Messiaen], whose pupil she was at the Paris Conservatoire in 1941, and whom she married in 1961. Messiaen quickly saw in Yvonne Loriod somebody whose technique could interpret his music as he saw it. He dedicated "Vingt Regards sur l'Enfant Jesus", "Visions de l'Amen", "Catalogue d'Oiseaux", "La Fauvette des Jardins", "Petites esquisses d'oiseaux" and most of the piano parts in his orchestral works to her. Yvonne Loriod was also a composer, writing several works including "Grains de cendre" (1946) for Ondes Martenot, piano and voice; but the only one to be performed in public was probably "Trois Mélopées africaines" for flute, ondes Martenot, piano and drum. She was also a renowned concertist and soloist, performing for instance 22 of Mozart's concertos in a single week or premiering Boulez's "Structures, Book 2", in 1961 at Donaueschingen.

Link | 0 | 1 | Bo Linde | Bo Linde | Sweden | Bo Linde | Anders Bo Leif Linde (1 January 1933–2 October 1970) was a Swedish composer whose style resembled that of notable 20th century neoclassical composers like Benjamin Britten and Samuel Barber. Born in Gävle, Linde studied music theory with Ingmar Bengtsson before enrolling at the Stockholm Academy of Music in 1948, where he studied composition with Lars-Erik Larsson and piano with Olof Wibergh. In 1953, one year after leaving the academy, he went to Vienna to study conducting and traveled around Europe before returning to Sweden. His most performed piece is probably his violin concerto. Bo Linde committed suicide in Gävle, at the age of 37. - Wikipedia ~*~ The translucence of his melodies and the liveliness and distinct contours of his pieces have made Bo Linde a highly respected and much loved composer. His conscientious working approach was always aimed at achieving a solid but at the same time spontaneously accessible result. Born in Gävle on 1st January 1933, died there on 2nd October 1970. His first music teachers, while he was still at school, were Eric Bengtsson and May Bökman. Later on Linde came to study composition with Lars-Erik Larsson at the State Academy of Music in Stockholm in 1948. He studied conducting in Vienna in 1953-1954. He taught the theory of music at the Stockholm Citizens’ School 1957-1960 and subsequently worked mainly in Gävle as a composer, pianist and music reviewer for the Gefle Dagblad Newspaper. A relaxed, fresh elegance was the leitmotiv of his approach to music, but this is not to say that his moods are invariably carefree. Quiet reflection and melancholy radiate from his mode of expression without ever going to the extreme of dismal gloom. This happiness at coming to terms with the potentialities of the musical craft invests his compositions with the dual character of inspiration and thorough knowledge. He composed in classically conceived forms with moderate thematic development, a conversation in the relationship between dignified melodies and other, more boisterously conceived phrases. - Gehrmans

Link | 0 | 1 | Enayet Hossain | Enayet Hossain | United States | Enayet Hossain | Enayet was born into a musical family, his grandfather, the late great Ustad Kader Buksh was acknowledged as one of India’s foremost musicologist/musician. Enayet learned the tabla from his father, Ustad Hamid Hossain, a very well known Indian music teacher and musician based in the United States. Enayet was born in Bangladesh and raised in the United States and represents a new breed of musicians who received their musical training outside of India. Enayet is a versatile performer of tabla. He is at ease with accompaniment with North Indian classical music, instrumental music, light and semi classical music including thumri, ghazal, dadra etc… as well as giving solo performances. Enayet has over 14 compact disc recordings available where he is featured. Enayet started accompanying India’s top musicians from an early age. While only 17, he accompanied Aftab-E-Sitar Ustad Vilayat Khan on several concerts. He has since accompanied artists like Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Budhaditya Mukherjee, Shujaat Khan, Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan and countless others. Enayet, who grew up in the United States since the age of 4 represents a new breed of musicians who have learned the art of music in outside of India. Enayet has several music compact discs to his credit and has performed tabla throughout the United States and India. He has been featured in many newspapers as a leading artist. He also received many citations from the state of Maryland for his outstanding contributions to the propagation of Indian music and its synthesis in American society. He has also received a grant from the Governor of Maryland as an artist in residence. Enayet has studied Computer Science in college and has brought his knowledge in Computer Science and mixed it with his musicianship. This enabled him to create some of the most ground-breaking products of Indian music. His first venture, with his close friend, Patrick Gomes was to release something that was an introduction to the instrument he loved so dearly. This lead to the development, and creation of Tabla Volume 1: A Journey Into Eastern Percussion. This cdrom has been critically acclaimed and has since been used in various musicology programs throughout the world. It is available from http://www.aimrec.com or http://www.amazon.com. The cdrom proved that the art of Indian music is alive and well and a vast amount of people throughout the world are interested in learning this and exploring the possibilities. Enayet along with another close associate of his, Anjan Chattopadhyay together thought that the next release should be a comprehensive multimedia encyclopedia of Indian music; something that would facilitate further interest in Indian music. Sangeetpedia was born, and will undoubtedly become something that the future generations can use to gain a greater understanding of Indian music and its intricacies. Enayet is not only a musician par excellence, but also someone who is in a position to combine technology with traditional music. Not to fuse it with another form of music or dilute it in any way, but to propagate it in its original form; the only difference being that the presentation is facilitated in an easier package that makes today’s generation able to access and learn from it. In 2013, Enayet became a full voting member of the Recording Academy.

Besides being a well-respected musician in his own right, Howie had toured extensively with the Rankins for the past ten years, appearing on all of their recordings, tours, and in their television appearances. Howie has maintained a solo career with 10 recordings to his credit: Howie MacDonald & His Cape Breton Fiddle (1985), A Taste of Cape Breton (1987), A Few Tunes (1989), Live and Lively (1991), The Ceilidh Trail (1993), the dance last night (1997), Just Relax (1998), WhY2Keilidh (1999), Cape Breton Fiddle Music NOTCALM (2001 ) with Ashley MacIsaac, and Howie's Celtic Brew (2002) live show recording, music and comedy. Howie also appears on several recordings of Natalie MacMaster's, and is featured on The Bridges of Cape Breton County(s), Cape Breton Connection, The Sounds of Nova Scotia (over 50,000 units sold - June '97), Atlantic Fiddles, and Rosin' the Bow. Howie has also recorded with J.P. Cormier, Natalie MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Dave MacIsaac and many others. Howie's achievements throughout his busy and diverse career are many. His tune "The Westburne Reel" was recorded by Leahy in their popular song "The Call to Dance" and his haunting arrangement of "Skye Boat Song" (from The Ceilidh Trail) was used in the movie "White Squall" starring Jeff Bridges. Howie was honoured with the Roots/Traditional Artist of the Year Award at the 1991 ECMA's and nominated for the following: Canadian Country Music Award (1996), Instrumental Artist of the Year (1997 ECMA), Producer of the Year (1999 Nova Scotia Music Week), Roots/Traditional Artist of the Year (2000 ECMA). This performer has gained a momentum of respect in the comedy industry as well. Howie carried a dual role of comedic actor / musician in the Cape Breton Summertime Revue in 1997. That same year, Howie landed a mainstage showcase for the East Coast Music Awards in which he again mixed music with zany comedy antics. In February 1999, Howie appeared on Nancy White's Joke Box which was broadcast nationally on CBC; the reviews......"MacDonald stole the show". Most recently, during the past two summers (2000-2001), "Howie's Celtic Brew," a comedy and musical revue type show, played to audiences throughout the Maritimes. Howie is about to release a new CD that features comedy and musical tracks from the two year touring show. Summer 2002 found Howie starring in "Canadian Loonie" in Ontario.
