Link | 1 | 1 | Holotropic | Holotropic | Bratislava | Holotropic | holotropic is the new name on the slovakian extreme metal scene. It came to life in 2013 (because the end of the world had not happened), through the transformation of a previous tech death project Dyschromatopsy. The trio, back then consisting of Kamil Adamík (guitars, vocals), Janči Hutka (drums) and Matej "Vein" Ferenčík (vocals) was enriched by Tomáš Švantner (guitars) and Rasťo Molnár (bass). After that the band started to rehearse songs with the focus on originality and freedom of artistic expression. That's why the spectrum of Holotropic stretches from fast, technical, insane-sounding riffs, through hard hitting heavy parts to slower, more atmospheric and melodic moments. Lyrically, the band deals with the issues of consciousness, perception of "reality", mental disorders and biases, spirituality and the quest for understanding the world (and one's self). Members of the band have previously been, or currently are members of other bands such as Nonprolific, Drifted Shadows, Disconcrete, God Defamer, Power of Pussy, Virtual Voyage... but holotropic is not just their project, it's a band, with its own life and plans. During its first year of existence holotropic managed to play several shows in Slovakia and played gigs in Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. The band have recently finished recording, mixing and mastering of the material for their first album, which will be called "permeate", and they are constantly looking for new possibilities of live playing.

Link | 1 | 1 | Fred Yaddaden | Fred Yaddaden | Fred Yaddaden | Originally from Saint-Etienne (France), music producer Fred Yaddaden started his career in the French Hip Hop scene as Defré Baccara. He was a member of La Cinquième Kolone and in paralel produced more than 25 albums, compilations and mixtapes (Eska Crew, Fisto, Max de 109, Daz-Ini, Piloophaz, Memphis Reigns,...). He was first exposed as Fred Yaddaden when he was chosen alongside Dj Vadim or Foreign Beggars to remix Ursula Rucker's track on Wax Tailor's We Be/There Is Danger EP. The critically acclaimed French producer was right away seduced by Fred's music: the same music you can now discover as he releases his first solo album, The Shadow of a Rose, 4 years after he finalized it. In this fully instrumental album, the producer illustrates a falsely ordinary love story, and demonstrates how a dusty pile of samples can become a blazing musical moment...

The first Gulaggh cd was finished in July 2008 and this time they used only classical instruments like violins, trumpets etc. For vocals they used several mental patients and over 30 children from a youth mental asylum.

Both were pursuing other ventures outside of the music business when Bob received an invitation from Canada to lead worship for a youth retreat. Bob immediately thought of teaming with John, much to the delight of the sponsors. As Bob began arranging popular worship songs for the duo to perform, it became obvious that it wouldn't be much harder to make an album together. After several months of work it was time to christen the new venture. Should they call themselves Bob and John...or Schlitt and Hartman? They elected to call themselves what they suspected people would call them inevitably..."Oh...that's two guys from Petra"!

My curiosity for the new concepts of physics was the inspiration for the creation of my latest projects. I’m trying to experiment a new way of expressing myself through a new form of art that I named “art quantum”. The concept of time in quantum physics is the foundation of my latest works, time not necessarily intended as transformation from past to present then future, but observed as the whole of space-time in casual fashion”. He likes to sonorize moments, images, thoughts. His music is an expression of the moment. That’s the reason why he doesn’t like postproductions, as everyone of his works are played and recorded exclusively live.

Link | 1 | 1 | Mister Peculiar | Mister Peculiar | United Kingdom | Mister Peculiar | In a time where music is gradually becoming a lifeless saleable product, few artists still succeed in staying away from the tempting spotlights and living music as a true, sheer form of art. For Mister Peculiar it's even more: he has always used music as a vehicle to express and instill emotions and feelings to the listener, taking no care for what trends, critics and the music business were dictating. For him, music is only about telling stories; combining the power of folk songwriters' straightforward, philosophical lyrics with haul-away, synesthesia-style music compositions and arrangements, he has always been focused on writing songs primarily to please himself rather than to make money. The lack of a school-type music education tied himself to no particular form of music or style, and helped him keeping out the behated concept of 'music genre' from his writing, leaving him free from boundaries and rules of composition, thus able to explore a broader soundscape. After few years spent collaborating as both composer and musician with various bands and artists, he began writing and producing music on his own. His first work, "I Should Follow Steve's Thought", was released in 2011, and clearly mirrors his attitude. The record is a collection of raw, unworldly songs which explore and combine together a mixture of folk, blues, psychedelic and rock to tell stories about introspection, unrequited love and hope. The album was shortly followed by the EP "Informal Session, pt. 1": an acoustic, more intimate rendition of 4 of those tracks. In 2014 he released his second work "Changes", a concept-album based around the journey through a young man's mind. The album is a rock opera that narrates the story of a man who, tired of the dullness and frustration of his current life, decides to leave his country but soon realises that just changing place is not enough. It will only be after an intimate and deep walk through his mind that he'll manage to overcome his demons, and finally enjoy the beauty of life. The music uses a wide variety of styles as it follows the development of the story to help explore the character's psychology, highlighting the various moods that accompany his road to discovery. Link | 1 | 1 | Rob Playford | Rob Playford | United Kingdom | Rob Playford | Robert Playford Rob Playford has been referred to as "the busiest man in jungle," and has probably had his hands in more aspects of the business, art, and culture of hardcore and drum'n'bass than any other single person. A DJ, recording artist (2Bad Mice, Kaotic Chemistry, Metalheads), label owner (Moving Shadow), and ultra-visible dance music proponent, Playford, like Goldie, Grooverider, and DJ Hype, has been a staple on the hardcore scene since it traded its helium-shrill vocal samples and rave whistles for chopped-up breaks and thunderous basslines in the early part of the '90s. An important catalyst of jungle's post-rave growth spurt, Playford's 2Bad Mice project helped push breakbeat beyond its rave trappings, and, with Moving Shadow as his engine, has played a crucial role in supporting jungle's growth as an autonomous art form. A native of Watton-At-Stone, Hertfordshire (just north of London), Playford DJed house and techno through the late-'80s height of the acid house movement, following the music into its harder element at decade's turn. He self-released his own track, "Orbital Madness," and became a touch point for young artists and bedroom producers seeking advice on how to break into the scene. Rather than continuing to funnel talent to other labels, however, Playford formed Moving Shadow in 1990 (assisted by a "how-to" book on running a small business), both to release his own material and those of up-and-coming hardcore artists such as Blame, Mixrace, Flytronix, and Earth Leakage Trip. Initially selling records out of the trunk of his car, the steady growth of the hardcore and jungle scenes, as well as the consistent quality of the music finding its way to Moving Shadow, meant the label quickly became a full-time commitment. Moving Shadow's early catalog was dominated by Playford-related projects, including 2Bad Mice, the influential trio Playford formed in 1991 with Sean O'Keefe and Simon Colebrooke. They released a number of club hits through the early '90s (including "Waremouse"), and are widely credited with releasing the first serious glimpse of drum'n'bass in 1992's massive "Bombscare." One of Moving Shadow's first chart successes, "Bombscare" charted in both the U.K. (#43) and the U.S. (#23) and has sold through a number of pressings, reissues, and remixes. Playford's other main musical venture -- Metalheads (the artist, not the label), together with Goldie -- have released a number of singles, including the massive hit "Inner City Life," arguably one of the most crucial moments in jungle's crossover to widespread acceptance. The pair also worked together on Moving Shadow's much-hyped 100th release, titled simply "The Shadow" and billed to Playford, Goldie, and Dominic Angus (of MS's Dom & Roland). The Metalheads tag has also been attached to a number of remixes, including post-Happy Mondays group Black Grape and the soundtrack for Mission: Impossible. Playford also engineered on Goldie's full-length debut, Timeless. Moving Shadow's incessant drum'n'bass P.R. extended in the mid-'90s to a series of regional compilations (including Storm from the East and Transcentral Connection), and the label has increasingly pushed the full-length format, with albums by Omni Trio, Foul Play, and E-Z Rollers all appearing. The label's stable has also grown to one of the most solid and acclaimed on the current scene, with new-crop artists such as Ed Rush, Dom & Roland, and Technical Itch all signing on. A reissue label, Re-Animate, was established in 1996, and MS's publishing arm has handled licensing for such popular U.K. TV shows as Eastenders and Father Ted. In addition to the success of his label and recording projects, Playford was also the recipient of a special award for outstanding industry contributions at the 1996 U.K. hardcore awards. -- Sean Cooper

Link | 1 | 1 | Retrospek | Retrospek | United States | Retrospek | Retrospek, a hip-hop trio from Boston first came together in 2006 when Rah Intelligence (Producer) and JuneLyfe (MC) met A. Spendacash (MC) through a mutual friend. Rah and June had been friends and musical collaborators since high school. It was at an impromptu cypher outside a show that a light sparked in Rah's mind: Stopping Spenda mid-verse, he shared a vision for making music as a trio with himself, Spenda and Junelyfe. The next week the three met up, put on some records, and vibed out – finding common ground and shared interests that would serve as the basis for future musical collaborations. This was the beginning of the organic chemistry that has defined the groups distinctive sound. And thus in a smokey Roxbury apartment, Retrospek was born.

He was one of BMI's top five songwriters/air play in its first 50 years, alongside Paul Simon, Kris Kristofferson, Jimmy Webb, and Paul McCartney. Ram also wrote, produced and/or arranged for The Platters, The Coasters, The Drifters, Ike and Tina Turner, Ike Cole, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Ella Fitzgerald, and many others. Ram is now mainly remembered for his long association with The Platters. The success of the group can be attributed to Ram's large circle of friends in the music industry that included songwriters, publishers, agents and artists. Ram was a talent manager with his own firm, Personality Productions, an A&R man and saxophone player in a dance band when Tony Williams, the brother of one of Ram's clients, auditioned for him. Ram was looking for a group to sing the songs he wrote and found the voice he was looking for in Williams. He built The Platters around Williams voice because the other members of the group could not sing in the harmony, like the Mills Brothers, that Ram truly wanted. Ram arranged and produced all recordings by The Platters, from their signing with Mercury Records until his death, and wrote their biggest hits including "Only You (And You Alone)", "The Great Pretender". "Magic Touch", and "Twilight Time". When Mercury announced that they would release "Only You" on their purple "race music" label, Ram insisted that the records be relabeled, stating that The Platters had worked too hard to have their (and his) market limited by a record label. Mercury agreed, and the records were relabeled, thereby breaking down racial barriers and laying the groundwork for the black groups of the 1960s and beyond. Ram wrote the lyrics to "The Great Pretender" in the washroom of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas after being asked what The Platters follow-up to "Only You" would be. In 1987, when the song hit #4 in England for Freddie Mercury, Ram had no idea who Mercury was but was thrilled his song was on the charts again - thirty one years after its 1956 premiere by The Platters, and like Dolly Parton and Liberace, he laughed all the way to the bank. Ram also wrote "The Magic Touch," the lyrics for "Come Prima (For the First Time)," "Twilight Time," "Chew Chew Chew Your Bubble Gum," (with Ella Fitzgerald), "Remember When," and "Ring Telephone Ring," among others. Controversy has surrounded "I'll Be Home for Christmas," since it was first published. The label on Bing Crosby's recording of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" credits it to Kent, Gannon, and Ram. Later recordings usually credit only Kent and Gannon. The discrepancy arose from the fact that on December 21, 1942 Buck Ram copyrighted a song titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas (Tho' Just in Memory)" although that version bore little or no resemblance, other than its title, to the Crosby recording. A song titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was also copyrighted on August 24, 1943, by Walter Kent (music) and James "Kim" Gannon (words). Kent and Gannon revised and re-copyrighted their song on September 27, 1943, and it was this version that Bing Crosby made famous. According to Ram and newspaper articles from the era, Ram wrote the lyrics to "I'll Be Home For Christmas" as a gift for his mother when he was a sixteen year old college student. In 1942, Ram's publisher chose to hold the song for release because they were going to release Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" first. Not completely satisfied with the song, Ram discussed his concerns with casual acquaintances, Kent and Gannon, in a bar. He left a copy of the song with them but never discussed it with them again. Both Ram and his publisher were shocked when the song was released. Ram's publisher sued and won. Unlike other talent managers of the era who were known for stealing and publishing songs others had written, Ram did not need to do so. He was a songwriter first and manager/producer second. The Platters and other groups he managed, like the Flares, were his vehicle to getting his songs recorded. In many cases he put singers names on songs he had written. The only other controversy in Ram's long songwriting career was with "Twilight Time" which had been an instrumental recorded by the Three Suns. When Ram wrote the lyrics to the song and made it a hit, the Three Suns sued. As in the Christmas standard, the court ruled that Artie Dunn and the Nevin brothers, writers of the instrumental, names be included. It did not find against Ram.

During the past years her musick evolved into various fields of sonic mayhem outside the borders of genre-boredom. From the beginning on, these recording sessions were seen as a form of ritual, done in a free-improvisation style with little to none post procession. Phi experimented with effects pedals and amplifier feedback and started to include hardware synthesizers and drum machines in 2015, which resulted in recordings, much reminiscent of the 90’s acid house scene but always with an subconscious drive to just touch these genres without getting soaked into them. The psychedelic artist is someone who strives to create his own magickal reality apart from society’s standards, and therefore is a heretic, only devoted to his very own imagination and realization.

Link | 1 | 1 | Karaboudjan | Karaboudjan | Karaboudjan | KARABOUDJAN was one of the many projects cooked up by Dan Swan who is most well-known for fronting EDGE OF SANITY back in the day but who also has been a noted producer as well as recording with several other bands/projects, most recently BLOODBATH and NIGHTINGALE. Swan's projects are always interesting and often a bit eccentric, but "Sbrodj" is wacky even by those standards. Of all the bands he has worked with before, PAN-THY-MONIUM might be the closest comparison here, with a rather unstructured writing style featuring twisted riffs that are alternately led by a very fuzzy guitar and proggy keyboards, along with the occasional squealing sax (heightening the comparison to PTM) and assorted other sounds (kettle drums even!). Swan of course, always keeps himself busy with various projects, but this one appears to be a one-off.Highly recommended if you like your prog metal experimental and avant garde, ala Mr.Bungle,Fantomas and Secret Chiefs 3.
