Link | 1 | 2 | Duul_Drv | Duul_Drv | Canada | Duul_Drv | S. Arden Hill Duul_Drv is a sound maker, minimalist and painter living in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. As sound maker his compositions attempt to fuse the aesthetics and method of his paintings with the dynamics of sound. By layering sounds actualized in digital software with edited field recordings duul_drv creates visual compositions that have been paralleled to camping, scuba diving, long drives on hot days, and watching bubbles floating outside a window. The "dusty and cracked" texture that's found in his compositions can be attributed to the overwhelming sense of location that Winnipeg offers. Duul_Drv has recently performed at Digidome a sound/video festival in Saskatchewan, Canada, at Salaeco in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and at MUTEK in Quebec, Canada.

Through years of aural refinement of their more brutal tendencies into a crushing, yet ethereal, soundscape of oppressive blackened death, ZHRINE soon outgrew their early moniker of GONE POSTAL, with which they had started infecting eardrums worldwide with multiple performances at the Eistnaflug Festival, Iceland Airwaves Festival, and later, with a hard fought for and very successful appearance at the Wacken Metal Battle in Germany. With their forthcoming debut album on Season of Mist, ZHRINE aim to introduce previously unheard elements of churning, visceral, atmospheres into the extreme metal palette, and cordially invite you, the listener, to join them on a road less travelled. Lyric soprano Iliana Tsakiraki, guitarist Steelianos, keyboardist Marianthi, bassist Thanos and drummer Philip Stone each bring something unique to this all-star lineup. Iliana, the voice behind Meden Agan, released a highly acclaimed studio album (Erevos Aenaon) and EP (Nemesis) with the groundbreaking group before she set her sights on new horizons. She also participated in Septicflesh’s latest studio album, The Great Mass, which was chosen as one of the very best metal albums of 2011. She has shared the stage with Tarja Turunen, Epica, Visions Of Atlantis, Maiden United and many more. She has also performed at the last two installments of Metal Female Voices Fest; MFVF Xl saw Steelianos and Philip take the stage as well with Iliana and Eve’s Apple. Steelianos, lead guitar, comes to the band from Keado Mores and Steelborn. He is also an accomplished solo artist, and his guitar artistry imprints his unmistakable style onto Enemy of Reality’s songs. Philip Stone is also a veteran of Meden Agan; he takes the drum throne now for EOR and provides a crushing heartbeat to every measure. Bass is held down by Thanos of FM Records’ Chthonian Alchemy, and, rounding the sound out, Marianthe on keyboards makes this band a two-woman outfit. With the excesses of talent and experience this group has collectively, they are destined to be unstoppable |

Link | 2 | 1 | Kælan Mikla | Kælan Mikla | Iceland | Kælan Mikla | Kælan Mikla is a three-piece punk/no-wave band from Reykjavík slowly getting darker and deeper with new waves and more instruments. The band consists of three girls who perform their own poetry and have been described as an avant-garde, fresh breeze into the Icelandic music scene in the past two years. The band was formed after winning first place in a poetry slam held by the city library in January 2013. They have since then played multiple festivals as well as just finishing a small europe tour. Kælan Mikla are known for their dark melancholic sound, most of the songs consisting only of heavy bass, drums and screams with some softer, melodic synth parts in-between. The bands lyrics focus on inner confusion and their intimidating stage performance, often including performance art of some sort, is bound to leave the crowd in a melancholic trance.

Link | 1 | 2 | Michael A. Arnzen | Michael A. Arnzen | Michael A. Arnzen | Author Michael Arnzen has won four Bram Stoker Awards for his horror writing. He scored and performed most of the instruments on his first audiobook, called "Audiovile" -- an eclectic, hour-long spoken word performance of 16 short stories and poems set to dark and quirky music. (A companion to the re-released and expanded edition of his book, 100 Jolts: Shockingly Short Stories). Jack Haringa, in his review of Audiovile for Dead Reckonings journal, called Arnzen's work "...a performance-art piece of manic Beatnik horror. For the majority of the CD's sixteen tracks, Arnzen assumes a frenzied persona that blends elements of Alan Ginsberg, Henry Rollins, and Patrick Bateman to deliver simultaneously horrifying and humorous short stories. His performances are supported by strange and atmospheric music that ranges across styles, evoking early punk for one track only to move into '80s Euro-horror soundtrack for the next and so on." Arnzen continues to experiment with performance, sound, and vision, to explore the modalities of bizarro, humor and horror fiction. A limited edition ep, "Live and Vile," captures a live reading and includes remixes and demo versions of Audiovile. Michael Arnzen keeps a weblog at http://www.gorelets.com/blog

Their sole album Golden Disc, self-released in 1981-82, provoked interest in experimental and conceptual music among Soviet rockers, modern artists and melomaniacs, and became hugely influential for many other bands, including Bachyt-Kompot, Waterfall, Khui Zabei, DK, and, of course, Egor Letov's side-project Communism. Originally self-distributed in samizdat as a "magnet tape" (reel-to-reel) album, Golden Disc was officially released on compact cassette in 1997 by Otdelenie VYHOD label in Russian Rock Zoo series. In 2014, it was re-released on CD+DVD (full album and a collection of short films from 1978-1982). Aleksandr Kushnir reviewed the album in 100 Magnet Tape Albums of Soviet Rock book. Friends and classmates Sven Gundlach, brothers Vladimir and Sergey Mironenko, Aleksey Kamensky, and Konstantin Zvezdochetov established Toadstool group on 24th March 1978. They created a collaborative painting Indian Hunting Down Eagle and declared this day to be an International Day of Happening. Toadstool staged and filmed satirical buffoonery performances, organized avant-garde exhibitions, radical psychedelic happenings and performances, published humorous manifestos and open letters, including one to [a=Margaret Thatcher] concerning Falkland Islands situation. On the winter holidays in December 1980 – January 1981, Toadstools got together at Aleksey Kamensky's apartment and decided to record their best "compositions." Golden Disc is a post-modernistic avant-garde radio play, with artists reciting their highly provocative poems over a pre-recorded sound collage, trying to match the rhythm and tempo. The studio technology was defiantly primitive. On a consumer Rostov-101 tape recorder, they would put a performer's voice on one channel, and pre-mixed sound collage from reel tape on the other. The soundtrack included "best of all times" instrumentals and fragments – everything from [a=Shocking Blue], [a=ABBA] and sound of Kremlin bells to Leonid Utyosov, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky symphonies, Arabian melodies, blues improvisations, and jazz standards. The album was initially distributed on DIY reel-to-reel tapes and presented as a "complex esoterically-theoretical avant-garde composition" in a small circle of Moscow underground artists, such as [a=Ilya Kabakov], Andrei Monastyrski, and Dmitri Prigov. A regular audience seemed to enjoy a humorous and radical collage outside of a highbrow artistic concept. Rock music was under political repressions in USSR at the time, so without many events to attend, listeners liked this album as an alternative form of music-related verbal communication, as a surrogate for the live concert experience. Link | 1 | 2 | Mykel Boyd | Mykel Boyd | Mykel Boyd | Mykel Boyd Mykel Boyd (°1970, Kankakee,IL) makes sound recordings, conceptual artworks, photos, installations and films. By experimenting with aleatoric processes, Boyd creates work in which a fascination with the clarity of content and an uncompromising attitude towards conceptual and minimal art can be found. The work is aloof and systematic and a cool and neutral imagery is used. His practice provides a useful set of allegorical tools for manoeuvring with a pseudo-minimalist approach in the world of conceptual art: these meticulously planned works resound and resonate with images culled from the fantastical realm of imagination. With a subtle minimalistic approach, he formalizes the coincidental and emphasizes the conscious process of composition that is behind the seemingly random works. The thought processes, which are supposedly private, highly subjective and unfiltered in their references to dream worlds, are frequently revealed as assemblages. His works feature coincidental, accidental and unexpected connections which make it possible to revise art history and, even better, to complement it. Combining unrelated aspects lead to surprising analogies. By applying abstraction, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal, luring the viewer round and round in circles. His works doesn’t reference recognisable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Mykel Boyd currently lives and works in Bradley,IL.

The band’s sound can be defined in its diversity, ranging from a darker form of mystic exotica to the sun-kissed soundtrack to some future film set on the shores of a faraway island. Their music combines the authentic sounds of fuzzy 70s high-life, the sensual sway of oriental Arabiana and a trippy Cumbia track of the sweltering kind, a kin to that of The Meridian Brothers.

THE BLESSED ISLES began as a solo project by former Hourly Radio (Kirtland Records) frontman Aaron Closson, but quickly became a collaborative effort when Nolan Thies (Little Black Dress) started recording the band. Their partnership yielded a stylish dream-pop reminiscent of bands such as M83, SLOWDIVE, LUSH, COCTEAU TWINS and CATHERINE WHEEL. The band released an EP in 2011 and signed with Saint Marie Records in 2012. Their debut full-length record came out in 2016.

Largely influenced by trip-hop, IDM and drone/ambient, Trdlx's music is engraved in a dark melancholic cinematic universe in which each composition can be seen as a singular story.

Link | 0 | 3 | Palantir | Palantir | Germany | Palantir | Christian Schimmöller "Palantír" is the name of a project by the composer and artist Christian Schimmöller. The name is taken from the well known book by the english author J.R.R. Tolkien. In Tolkien's fantasy world "Palantír" is translated as "what glances at the very distant" and is the name for an ancient crystal ball that can be used to look at distant lands and things and for telepathical communication with other persons far away. Certainly music can also have such abilities, therefore for Christian Schimmöller Palantír becomes a symbol for musical mind-trips. Though at first directly inspired by Tolkien's world, the music doesn't stick with acting as a mere soundtrack for "The Lord of the Rings". The music is meant to invoke pictures, impressions and emotions in the listener and to open the gate to the listener's own fantasy world. Palantír's music could be regarded as a kind of "sound-movie", but the music goes beyond the possibilities of a movie, because it is the listener who creates and experiences his own movie - a new one with every listening. The musical "roots" of Palantír, among others, can be found in the music of the so-called "Berliner Schule"(Berlin School), a style invented in the 70s by artists like Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze or Ashra. The intention of this music was to break free from the clutching rules and old structures of music styles. The long tracks of this music used repeated sequences (patterns, that were slightly varied, similar to the methods of "Minimal Music") to create an effect of trance and meditation. Mostly instrumental, these tracks also discovered new worlds in sound by the use (and development!) of electronic sound-generators such as synthesizers, sequencers and digital samplers. From these "roots" in Electronic Music (in short EM, where on closer look most of today's music is generated by electronics and EM isn't that purely electronic at all...) Christian Schimmöller developed his own musical style, without sticking to the "rules" of dedicated genres. Therefore the music of Palantír cannot easily be put into one of the common genre-drawers such as New-Age, Ambient, Pop, Jazz, Avantgarde, Classical or Electronic. For Christian Schimmöller the search for new forms of musical expression and sounds is a vital part in creating new music. To achieve this, every tool is welcome to Palantír, be it electronic or acoustic, natural or artificial, analogue or digital. Next to the elements rhythm, melodie or harmony, the sound is equally part of the composition. On the search for new musical sounds and structures one thing is especially important for Palantír's music: the music should be accessible to the listener, touching his emotions. In many parts of Avantgarde or New Instrumental Music the main purpose of music moves too far into the background. Music is made for listening to, it must have a meaning. The listener must be able to emotionally experience the music, otherwise the music becomes insignificant, meaningless, becomes mere noise.

Link | 1 | 2 | Divine Weeks | Divine Weeks | Divine Weeks | Divine Weeks were perhaps one of L.A.'s best could-have-been bands -- certainly the hype and attention they received through their existence was close to that given to groups like U2, but at least the music was good enough to warrant it. Childhood friends Bill See, singer, Rajesh K. Makwana, guitar, and George Edmondson, bass, formed in late fall 1983 and started writing songs in the Edmondson basement. George invited fellow UCLA dorm mate and drummer Brad Holtzman down to rehearsals and soon the four christened themselves The Need. In 1985, they released “Obviously Four Believers,” a collection of demos produced by Ethan James on their own 221B Records. Slowly the band began to garner rave reviews and developed a loyal local following. A chance meeting with producer and The Last’s keyboardist Vitus Matare was a turning point for the band. In the middle of building his own studio, Vitus offered the band his counsel and a place to rehearse regularly in exchange for some help putting together his studio. In early 1987, the band parted ways with drummer Brad Holtzman and then changed its name to Divine Weeks. The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn signed the band to his own Down There label and lent them his drummer Dennis Duck for the recording of their debut LP Through & Through produced by Matare. Drummer Dave Smerdzinski joined the band in April and soon the band gained attention as one of the best live acts in town. Through and Through was released in May and the band embarked on its first national tour that summer.

Link | 2 | 1 | Liturgy of Decay | Liturgy of Decay | France | Liturgy Of Decay | Liturgy Of Decay are a French symphonic gothic metal band founded in 1995. The initial lineup consisted of Vincent Cutté on drums with Sébastien Rousset and [a=Olivier Luthereau] on guitar. At first the band were simply rehearsing for fun and unity without the creation of any real songs. This changed in June 1997 when Olivier decided to invest in a programmable synth and began to compose genuine pieces with the addition of his own vocals. Olivier Ragon soon joined the band on bass and in December 1998 the four track demo EP "[r=2906022]" was recorded with the vocals being mixed in January 1999. Ragon then left the band and was replaced by Ronan Le-Boïté in August of the same year. The EP was met with positive reviews and in 2002 the first recordings for the debut album "Psalms Of Agony And Revolt - L'Oeuvre Au Noir" were released digitally through various social media websites. Several other lineups would follow and fall apart as different paths were taken. This left the band in a long state of inactivity until Olivier connected with a number of musicians within a period of just a few months. These new members matched Oliver's passion and vision so profoundly that he decided to rearrange all of the old songs with them and record the debut album once more. These new recordings are set to release on the [l=D-Monic] label in the near future.

Over time Infectious Audio have added extra members in the form of long term friends, Nathan Doe & Sam Maclaren, to give the outfit a deeper collective input and the shape it has today. After many sessions in the studio, both collectively and separately, honing their production skills and sound, the crew have started to put some material together worth giving to the keen ear of the Offset imprint. Now with their first release on the way the boys are hard at work to improve their sound further and come up with more material for Offset and other labels. The engineer of the outfit is Mike Craske whose technical knowledge is invaluable. Matt Craske adds a little experience and dance floor knowledge, with Nathan and Sam rounding off the group with their fresh approach to music and substantial contribution to some of the best productions by the group. All of this takes place at Mike Craske's KonSoul studio and we should be hearing much more for this quartet of talented producers very soon.

Link | 1 | 2 | Ruairi Lazers | Ruairi Lazers | Ruairi Lazers | Ruairi Matthews Ruairi Lazers has experimental approach to dance music that often results in the unpredictable. All manner of styles and tempos are mashed together in an intelligent mix of acoustic instruments, ambient interludes, melodic synths and breakbeats. His sound is influenced by the artists such as Tipper, Richard H. Kirk, Shpongle and Si Begg as well as the output of Skam, Warp, Schematic and Rephlex record labels. For his live performances, Ruairi plays on a hybrid kit of acoustic and v-drums which enables him to utilize an incredibly wide array of percussive sounds. A laptop is also used for live effects manipulation, as well as running some sequenced parts such as melodies and atmospherics. Due to his artistic background he believes the accompanying visual element is equally important, consisting mainly of projections and intelligent lights. His high-energy performances of bright light and loud sound have to be witnessed to be fully understood and appreciated. Ruairi is also an experienced lighting and sound technician, working with some of the best clubs and festivals both in Canada and Ireland since the mid-1990s. He has been an instrumental part of the electronic music scene in western Canada due to his involvement with festivals such as Shambhala, Soundwave, Connect and countless other events.

Link | 2 | 1 | Lost Penguin | Lost Penguin | Lost Penguin | With the Matthew !WOWOW! remix of debut single 'Mr Whippy' being championed in the summer of 2006 by London's XFM radio station DJ's John Hillcock and Jon Kennedy it was quickly recognised as one of the earliest releases by any of London's 'Nu Rave' scene band's. That limited edition single single sold out 'on release' reflecting the impact of their appearances with 'Klaxons' and Canadian duo 'Crystal Castles' who shared stages with them on their first UK visit in summer 2006. Active players in London's underground art scene, ('Kev Soar' aka 'The Greenwich Pirate' runs 'Toy Pirate' magazine), 'Lost Penguin' forged a close alliance with noted artist 'Danny Sangra', often collaborating and performing at his Exhibitions. At a happening in 'Pineal Eye Gallery' in 2006 Sangra constructed a one-off costume for singer Kerry (aka 'Charleigh Blue'), the custom printed fabric for which later became incorporated in his painting 'Charleigh Blue' which was exhibited in his later show at Tescodisco gallery in February 2007. That fabric design also forms the basis of the 'Mr Whippy' artwork. Not without controversy their confrontational performances often provoked angry responses. At a Hepatits C Awareness benefit, their opening slot for headlining electroclash outfit 'Client' prompted a furious backlash from Client fans on their web forum, delivering Lost Penguin the insult that became their slogan - 'talentless pricks'. Follow-up single 'Pleasurewood Kills' rapidly attained status when both tracks were voted into John Peel's 'festive fifty' in February 2007. 'Lost Penguin' had matched 'Half Man Half Biscuit' and 'The Wedding Present' as the only other acts who could count two songs amongst the list of the twenty shortest songs ever to receive that accolade! In October 2007 'Lost Penguin' played their 100th and final show at Catch22 in London, announcing 'we are splitting... whilst we are still friends'. Bassist 'Matt Gilbert' later joined live drummer 'Andrew Moran' and play live across Europe with 'The Violets', Kerry went on to collaborate with members of american electro act 'Dreamburger'. Kev Soar continues with his 'Toy Pirate' activities.
