Link | 1 | 1 | Humrush | Humrush | Humrush | Torkjel Austad & Halvard Helle Humrush was formed in Kristiansand, Norway by brothers Torkjel Austad (keyboards/samples) and Halvard Helle (guitars) in the beginning of 1998. In July 1999, Humrush debuted live with three intimate and successful concerts at the Quart Festival with audiences including Massive Attack and Blur. The concerts set the standard for the sound of Humrush being a mix of live instruments and samples. This could not have been done without the additions of talents like Klaus Blomvik (drums), Roger Williamsen (double bass) and Tine Wulff (vocals). In May 2000, Torkjel and Halvard starts working on their "Turbotape" relase. The songs chosen were "Sugarpop" and "Only Way" and the ground work is produced together with Daniel Steinsland in Oslo. Later, bass (Roger Williamsen) and drums (Klaus Blomvik) for "Turbotape" were recorded in Kristiansand. Vocals by Tine Wulff are recorded in Oslo. The final production is finished a month later by Torkjel, Halvard and Peter Edwards. Humrush - Turbotape (12") was released on Groovecentral Recordings in April 2001 with remixes by Christian Watkins (Slowpho) and Dan Drehn (Selsius). On April 25 2001 "Sugarpop" played at NRK P3 (Norwegian radio) for the first time. But this was literately just the start. In the following months the various songs of the Turbotape release was played regularly through the year. Humrush last performance was at By:Larm 2002 festival.

Link | 1 | 1 | Störungstelle | Störungstelle | Störungstelle | Joren Hemeryck Störungstelle (Joren Hemeryck) was born somewhere in Belgium on a cold winter-evening in the year 1983. He started producing with Fruity Loops at the age of 19. Six months later he began playing guitar and replaced Fruity by Reason. That same year he was also creating music with David Vermandele and Pietje Maes, and this co-operation was the beginning of Boys Withoys. A year and a few livesets later, he quit Boys Withoys due to personal issues, and started his own project, called Störungstelle in may 2006. Around that time he began using Cubase alongside Reason, and the first Gesmoyer (= Oëto + Störungstelle) songs were hatching. At the end of 2007 Gesmoyer played their first liveset at BugKLinik NYE, and many more followed this success in 2008. Recently Störungstelle released his first EP, I'm Innocent, on the Amenorea netlabel. He continues to work on both his solo project and Gesmoyer, playing livesets in the Belgian underground electronic music scene.

They play many types of songs, both old and new. One minute they might play a song of their own, and the next minute they may play a Grand Funk Railroad tune with a hipster edge to it. The horn section is tight, they have a kickin' rhythm section, and the band is lead by a great vocalist. Together they make one swingin' band. So, Set 'Em Up Joe!!!

Link | 1 | 1 | Heather Mac | Heather Mac | South Africa | South African pop/rock singer | Heather Mac | BIOGRAPHY Heather Mac rose to prominence in the South African rock music firmament in the early 1980s, as the lead singer of Ella Mental, an outfit hailed by music promoter, Roddy Quin, then scrounging for talent for EMI (SA), as “the most innovative and progressive group of people this country had ever seen” Heather was first “discovered” in 1981 belting out a version of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry at Mangles, a Braamfontein folk club, by the guitarist Tim Parr, late of the blues-rock outfit, Baxtop, and he approached the tall, striking vocalist, saying he was looking for someone to sing some new songs he’d been writing. At first, Heather worked with Tim as a backing vocalist but, by the time Ella Mental started gigging, Heather had moved centre stage as the group’s focal point. As the Afrikaans writer Deon Maas noted, “Watching Heather Mac was unlike watching any other lead vocalist of the time. Poised dramatically under strong lights that isolated her from the rest of the band, strong arm movements reminiscent of pre-war Berlin performance art, it was only her voice that kept on reminding you that you were actually listening to a rock band.” The group’s first single, Pressure, was released in 1984, and the following year, their first album, Uncomplicated Dreams. The group criss-crossed the country, building up a dedicated fan base through dynamic live appearances. Despite their popularity, it soon became clear that they had reached a ceiling of sorts in South Africa. One of their subsequent singles, Madmen, was even ludicrously banned by the apartheid authorities as it appeared to be a criticism of then-president PW Botha’s government. With the rest of the group in tow, Heather and Tim decamped to Ireland, where they worked on breaking into the international market. The breaks never came, and after a while, bassist Adrian Levi returned to South Africa and drummer Herman Eugster left for Switzerland. But Heather and Tim plugged on with a new version of the group and they were signed by Warner Bros following a gig at the Marquee Club in London. Heather and Tim moved to Los Angeles in 1989 to record the Ella Mental album. It was released in the US, the UK, Australia and Europe – but sadly, not in South Africa. The group finally disbanded in 1992. It was also the end of Heather and Tim’s marriage. Heather returned to South Africa with her children, Amber and Luke, in December 1991. It took her a full two years, before she was to perform and write songs again. In 1994, the short-lived Heather Mac Band was formed, with singersongwriter-guitarist Edi Niederlander, the late Ilne Hofmeyr on bass, and drummer Steve Howells. In 1997, Heather wrote and co-created In The Mix, a seven part SABCT TV series funded by the Department of Education. Shortly thereafter, until about 2004, Heather became a citizen of what she refers to as “the corporate world”, working for a national retail chain. But the world of music and performance was always close at hand. Heather appeared in a number of Jazzart productions and, more importantly, she also met her current partner, the guitarist Mark Harris, who has been performing with her since 1997. Together with Mark, Heather has also been appearing with The Brills, a group that also includes former Bright Blue bassist Ian Cohen and singer Tonia Selley. Apart from singing, Heather has also carved a significant career for herself in theatre. She is the founding director, principal coach and creator of MORE, a co-operative, non-profit communications company that focuses on personal and leadership development in the corporate, NGO and artistic performance fields. More recently, amongst other things, she served as an Employee Wellness consultant to The Clicks Group, providing staff training and leadership development spanning all aspects of Employee Wellness and HIV Disease Management. She was part of the team that researched, designed, launched and implemented the groundbreaking, award winning EWP on the group’s behalf in 2005. Heather is currently designing processes to enable young people and members of vulnerable and marginalised areas in the Western Cape to realise their creative potential and take a leading role in their own communities. Her theatre company, MORE Theatre has produced three children’s musical productions based on African folk tales. Her most recent production, Snake Magic, represented South Africa at the 10th Annual African Theatre Festival for Children and Young People in Yaoundé, Cameroon in November 2008. Now, in 2011, she returns as a recording artist with her new album, Within, a collection of personal songs gathered from the last 25 years of her life. |

Link | 1 | 1 | Josh Homme | Josh Homme | United States | Josh Homme | Joshua Michael Homme III Born: May 17, 1973, Palm Desert, California Songwriter/guitarist Josh Homme has been part of two of the most acclaimed stoner rock/metal bands of the late '90s, early 2000s: Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. Formed in the late '80s, Kyuss hailed from Palm Desert, CA, and built a following by throwing "generator parties" (which consisted of inviting friends out to a secluded part of the desert at night while the band would plug into a power generator and jam away until dawn). The band's 1991 debut, Wretch, was ignored by the public (despite such similar-sounding acts as Soundgarden and Alice in Chains storming the charts), and while 1992's Blues for the Red Sun received widespread critical acclaim, it, too, failed to break the band commercially. Kyuss signed with Elektra, issuing two more releases (1994's and 1995's ) before calling it quits in 1995. Let down by Kyuss' breakup, Homme didn't touch his guitar for nearly a year, but decided to get back into music when Screaming Trees invited him to serve as the band's second guitarist on select tour dates in support of their 1996 release, Dust. This led to cameos on recordings by other artists (Gamma Ray [2], Wellwater Conspiracy, and Mike Johnson), as well as starting up the multi-volume series, The Desert Sessions, which featured former members of Soundgarden, Monster Magnet, and Kyuss indulging in tripped-out jams. All the guest spots had rekindled Homme's desire to form another full-time band, and by the late '90s he was ready to take the plunge again. Homme hooked up with former Kyuss/Dwarves bassist Nick Oliveri to form Queens of the Stone Age, a band who tempered Kyuss' monolithic rock with more varied styles and focused songwriting. The pair would be joined by a revolving door of other members (with both Homme and Oliveri sharing vocal duties), and by 1998, QOTSA were signed to Stone Gossard's Loose Groove label, issuing their self-titled debut the same year. 2000 saw the release of their sophomore effort (and first for the Interscope label), , which became one of the year's most critically praised rock releases, as the band toured with such big names as Hole, Foo Fighters, and The Smashing Pumpkins (as well as being part of Ozzfest 2000 and the 3rd Rock in Rio).

Just as the name suggests, the quartet aspires to straddle the profound and the profane.

Equally inspired by computer glitch, grindcore, breakcore, cartoon music and karaoke, Maxi bacon serve up a electrified meat-punch to the brain with random collages of screaming digital nonsense and mass audio confusion. The basis of their sound comes from using highly customized music software to accompany their extreme and unpredictable vocal improvisations - from metal growls, to karaoke crooning, to uncomfortable vomiting, to microscopic spitting and breathing. Maxi Bacon deliberately carry themselves with a blatant disregard for appropriate musical conduct, instead indulging in brutal noise blasts, confusing musical choices, computer wizardry and vocal stupidity.

From the 1940s through the 1960s, she was the first woman trombonist to work in the leading big bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, Gerald Wilson, and Clark Terry. Melba went into performance retirement and moved to Jamaica from 1973 to 1979, where she first taught at the University of the West Indies and then became director of Popular Music Studies at the Jamaica Institute of Music in Kingston. She was forced to give up playing in 1985 after a stroke left her partially paralyzed, but she continued to arrange music with Weston, contributing her imaginative, often strikingly dramatic arrangements to a succession of his albums in the 90s. She was afflicted by a further series of strokes, which eventually proved fatal. Born: January 13, 1926, Kansas City, Missouri. Died: April 23, 1999, Los Angeles, California.

Link | 1 | 1 | Patrinell Staten | Patrinell Staten | Patrinell Staten | Patrinell "Pat" Staten Wright Soul singer Patrinell Staten was born and raised in Carthage, TX. The daughter of a preacher, she absorbed the gospel music of Mahalia Jackson while performing in her father's church choir. In 1964 she relocated to Seattle, forming Pat Wright & the Cassanovas; soon she was headlining Emerald City clubs including Club Ebony and the Tiki Tavern, eventually touring the West Coast's so-called "chitlin circuit" of black-owned nightclubs. Staten remained rooted in the church, however, and in 1967, while performing at Seattle's True Vine Baptist, she was approached by LaVera Clark, owner of the aspiring Sepia label. Clark was also a songwriter, but when none of her material was to Staten's liking, the singer simply wrote her own. "I Let a Good Man Go," backed by the superior B-side "Little Love Affair," appeared on Sepia in 1969. Though a local smash thanks to steady airplay on KYAC, it never cracked the national consciousness. In 1973 Staten retired from the club circuit, founding the Total Experience Gospel Choir, which in 1989 became the first African-American-oriented choir to perform in the Mormon Tabernacle. In later years, Staten also returned to secular performance, playing jazz and R&B with her Good Foot Band. Her lone Sepia single was later rediscovered by the DJs and clubgoers populating Britain's Northern soul scene, with impossibly rare original copies fetching upwards of $4,000 prior to its inclusion on the Light in the Attic label's excellent 2004 compilation Wheedle's Groove: Seattle's Finest in Funk & Soul 1965-75.

Link | 1 | 1 | Bea Wain | Bea Wain | United States | Bea Wain | American Big Band-era vocalist (born April 30, 1917 in New York City). On a 1937 recording with Artie Shaw she was credited as Beatrice Wayne, which led some to assume that was her real name. On record labels her name was shortened (without her permission) to "Bea" by the record company, ostensibly for space considerations. As she explained, "They cut it to 'Bea' Wain. They cut the 'Beatrice' out to 'Bea.' I was just a little old girl singer, but that's the truth. So that's how my name became 'Bea Wain'." She led the vocal group Bea and the Bachelors (with Al Rinker, Ken Lane, and John Smedberg), and the V8 (seven boys and a girl) on the Fred Waring show. In 1937, Wain joined former Tommy Dorsey arranger Larry Clinton and His Orchestra. She was featured with Clinton on a number of hit tunes, including "Martha" and "Heart and Soul". In 1939, she was voted the most popular female band vocalist in a Billboard poll, and that same year she began her solo career. Wain had four #1 hits:"Cry, Baby. Cry," "Deep Purple", "Heart and Soul" and her signature song, "My Reverie." She is considered by many to be one of the best female vocalists of her era, possessing a natural feel for swing-music rhythms not often found among white singers of the day. With regard to technique, she excelled in pitch and subtle utilization of dynamics. She also communicated a feminine sensuality and sang with conviction in an unforced manner. On May 1, 1938, Bea Wain married radio announcer André Baruch. Their honeymoon in Bermuda was cut short when Fred Allen called Baruch asking him to return to New York to substitute for his ailing announcer, Harry von Zell. They were married for 53 years. Baruch died in 1991.

Link | 1 | 1 | Satan! | Satan! | SATAN! | SATAN! Satan! is a doom / sludge band from Singapore. How does one explain the music he or she is listening to without short-changing the efforts made in writing those songs? A similar situation is presented when one listens to SATAN!. Strains of musical DNA reminiscent of Cavity, Jesu and Earth could be picked up, but as with most good bands, these influences are usually laced with characters and experiences, traits that often form a unique path. And that's what listening to SATAN! is. It's a weighted journey guided by a trio that have pushed musical boundaries via their other conduits (Castles, Drug Plant Patient, Wormrot, I Am David Sparkle, etc). We can expect something more than just a lacing of influences. We are in for a ride.

Link | 1 | 1 | Madame Violence | Madame Violence | Madame Violence | Madame Violence started in 2009 when the two former members from the band Azrael, guitarrist Zé Simões and singer Bruno Sousa, decided to form a project on their own and they started to look for new musicians to complete the line up. In this project though Bruno was the drummer of the band. After going frew several line up changes and Ricardo Carniça joining the band as guitarrist, the line up consisted on Bruno Sousa on drums, Zé Simões and Ricardo Carniça on guitars and Jorge Oliveira on vocals. The band was still without a bassist though, and in 2011 Telmo Santo join in as the band's new member. The line up was complet but the band wasn't quite happy with it's sound and line up, and in late 2011 André Fragoso join the band as their new drummer and Bruno Sousa went to vocals once again. After this new change, we started to write new songs and in 2012 started to do some shows over the country, going from Side B Benavente to X-Tus Bar playing with a lot of great bands such as Promethevs, Aernus and many others. Later in 2013, after a positive reaction from the public in our shows we decided that it was time to record our first EP. Unfortunatley in march Bruno decided to leave and the band had no singer to fill in the place and spent the entire month searching for a new one and that was when Carlos Amado join in as the new singer. As of that time, we have spent the last months working on the songs with Carlos over again and write new lyrics as well and we have been working also in recordings. There were a few personal problems that unfortunatley had to put the recording on a hold for some time, but now the recordings are almost done and the first EP of the will be out in 2013.
