Link | 0 | 1 | Angela Jaeger | Angela Jaeger | United States | Angela Jaeger | A native New Yorker, vocalist Angela Jaeger started out singing at high school dances and subsequently moved to London to study voice and musical theatre. She became part of the UK punk scene and formed The Drowning Craze with [a=Simon Raymonde] in 1980, leaving after one single to return to college. "Storage Case / Damp Bones," released in 1981 on [l=Situation 2], became Single of the Week in both NME and Melody Maker (reviewed by [a=Paul Morley] and Dave McCulloch respectively). Angela recorded with The Monochrome Set, Billy McKenzie, The Bush Tetras and recorded 'Bali Hai' with Disconnection, a [l=Y Records] house-band, before joining [a=Pigbag] in late 1982. Following a tour of Europe and Japan, and the recording of a single and two albums for Y Records, Pigband disbanded. Following the breakup of Pigbag, vocalist Angela Jaeger, bassist Simon Underwood and guitarist James Johnstone formed Instinct. Signed to [l=ZTT], Instinct quickly found itself at odds with producer [a=Trevor Horn]. After recording a single that never saw the light of day, Instinct folded. Only one intriguing track was released, "Swamp Out," appearing on the compilation Zang Tuum Tumb Sampled (IQ6) in 1985. After the death of Instinct, Angela relocated to Barcelona where she lived for nine years. Sessions with local musicians and TV and radio work placed her at the centre of the Barcelona scene. In the late 1990s Angela Jaeger finally returned home to New York. She collaberated with [a=David Cunningham] on "Artificial Homeland" in 1998 and contributed vocals to The Vanity Set's 2003 album "Little Stabs of Happiness."

Link | 0 | 1 | Giovanni Di Domenico | Giovanni Di Domenico | Giovanni Di Domenico | Giovanni Di Domenico, pianist, performer, composer, was born in Rome on the 20th July 1977, a significantly tempestuous period in socio-political terms, featuring hostile polarizations and an ostensive paramilitarism, mutinous ideological confrontations and bloody terrorist attacks, rendered infamous in the description ‘Years of Lead’. In that particularly caustic summer, the so-called ‘Movement of 1977’, non-aligned, without any ties to the Parliament and non-violent, broke into the scene of prevalent conspiracy-steeped paranoia condemning the repressive, discriminatory and authoritarian tendencies of the Italian State and demanding equality for minorities and further civil rights. The coinciding liberalization of the media market, putting an end to RAI’s monopoly, further defined this period as the prime moment for pirate radio, with the consequence of a libertarian fragmentation of youth culture, epitomised by punk. —— One could argue that Giovanni, self-taught until the age of 24, inherited – in philosophy, politics and artistically – the most benign and affirmative traits of that period, diversifying his action in the context of a recently unified Europe, promoting improbable connections, exploring varied geographies, comfortably manoeuvring aesthetical fringes and making a commitment to live performance at its most liberating and engaging. Surprisingly, the path that lead him to that point had an unexpected detour: following his father’s consecutive assignments as a civil engineer he actually lived out his first decade in Africa – until he was five in Libya, from then until his eight anniversary in the Cameroons and until ten in Algeria. His far off native country was not synonymous with civil unrest as much as with opera, whose arias he would memorize with his siblings in order to practice the language and provide some family entertainment. The condition of expatriate had a strong influence in his education – he clearly remembers the calls of the muezzin, the sound of exotic musical instruments in local markets, the ritualistic expression music took in the streets of Yaoundé, or the songs he heard from his nanny in the Cameroons. —– When he finally enrolled in music school – majoring in ‘jazz piano’- he further built on an encyclopaedic technique; rhythm, harmony and tone are informed by non-western traditions yet equally sensitive to Debussy’s “Préludes”, Luciano Berio’s “Sequenzas”, to the ‘ambi-ideation’ heard in Borah Bergman’s Soul Note recordings, Cecil Taylor’s polissemic density, Paul Bley’s bruised transparency and of course, the most radical manifestations stemming from the underworld of pop music, invariably tied together by his own original praxis. A distinction – one would call it generational – he shares with many of the musicians he has crossed paths with recently, artists as different as Nate Wooley, Chris Corsano, Arve Henriksen, Jim O’Rourke, Akira Sakata, Okkyung Lee, Tetuzi Akiyama, Manuel Mota, John Edwards, Steve Noble, DJ Sniff, Terrie Ex, David Maranha, Norberto Lobo, Tony Allen, Peter Jacquemyn, Alexandra Grimal, João Lobo, John Duncan, Rafael Toral or Toshimaru Nakamura. Di Domenico has founded his own label, Silent Water, home of an eclectic and occasionally unclassifiable production. He lives in Brussels.

Link | 0 | 1 | Clare Hammond | Clare Hammond | United Kingdom | Clare Hammond | Her most recent disc release, ‘Etude’ has received unanimous critical praise for its “unfaltering bravura and conviction” (Gramophone) while the BBC Music Magazine stated that “this array of wizardry is not for the faint hearted”. ‘Etude’, and Hammond’s previous disc of music by Andrzej and Roxanna Panufnik, ‘Reflections’, have been featured on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ and ‘CD Review’, and on radio in Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, the US and Canada. In 2014, Hammond gave a Panufnik Centenary tour of Poland with a series of recital and concerto performances, under the auspices of the British Council’s ‘Artists’ International Development Fund’. Her debut recital at the ‘Chopin and his Europe Festival’ in Warsaw was recorded for broadcast on Polish Radio. Hammond also co-curated and managed the festival ‘Panufnik 100: a family celebration’ with the Brodsky Quartet at Kings Place in London which was hailed as the “culmination of this year’s Andrzej Panufnik centenary” (The Telegraph). Contemporary music forms an important part of Hammond’s work. She has given 24 world premieres including those of major works by composers Robert Saxton, Edwin Roxburgh, John McCabe and Arlene Sierra. In 2015, she premiered and recorded concertos for trumpet and piano by Geoffrey Gordon and Toby Young with Simon Desbruslais and the English Symphony Orchestra, to be released on Signum Records. An active chamber musician, Hammond is a member of the Odysseus Piano Trio alongside violinist Sara Trickey and cellist Gregor Riddell. She has also worked with the Brodsky, Endellion, Badke, Dante and Piatti Quartets and in duos with Henning Kraggerud, Andrew Kennedy, Jennifer Pike, Philippe Graffin and Lawrence Power. In November 2015 she made her film debut as the younger version of Maggie Smith's character, 'Miss Shepherd', in the Alan Bennett film adaptation The Lady in the Van, directed by Nick Hytner. Hammond completed a BA at Cambridge University, where she obtained a double first in music, and undertook postgraduate study with Ronan O’Hora at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and with Professor Rhian Samuel at City University London. She completed a doctorate on twentieth-century left-hand piano concertos in 2012 and is in demand as a speaker, regularly giving presentations for research series at universities across the UK. In 2014 she was paired with French pianist Anne Queffélec on the Philip Langridge Mentoring Scheme run by the Royal Philharmonic Society. Hammond is grateful for the support of the Fidelio Charitable Trust, Help Musicians UK, Stradivari Trust, Ambache Charitable Trust, British Korean Society, Chandos Memorial Trust, Vernon Ellis Foundation, Polish Cultural Institute, RVW Trust, British Council, Arts Council England, John S Cohen Foundation, the Britten-Pears Foundation and the Hinrichsen Foundation.

At the age of fifteen Ron shopped his first demo at [l=Trax Records]. There he first met Chicago's legendary DJ [a=Ron Hardy], working as A&R for Trax Records. Two years, and a new alias later (DJ Skull) later while at the Power Plant, Chicago's own [a=Steve Poindexter] heard a DJ playing one of Rons tracks, and met Ron. Steve was now A&R at [l=Saber Records] and invited Ron to release some tracks. So in October of 1991 DJ Skull's first record "N.R.G. Music" was released. Link | 0 | 1 | Stefano Benni | Stefano Benni | Italy | Stefano Benni | Stefano Benni, one of the most well-known Italian authors of political satire, was born in Bologna in 1947. He is not only a novelist, dramatist and poet but also a journalist and director. Since his literary breakthrough with the science fiction novel "Terra!" in 1983, he has joined the ranks of Italy's best-selling authors. He has written some twenty books in a variety of genres which he handles playfully, ranging from political thrillers to fairytales and the grotesque, and his works are especially popular with young readers. Despite his macabre, fantastical and exaggerated characters, his stories are close to reality. Benni's literary output includes novels, collections of short stories and volumes of poetry which have been translated into several languages. The media satire "Baol" (1990) is clearly a spin on George Orwell's "1984", as is the "Ministry of Truth", a TV archive which controls the masses through false images. A satire on the media and politics full of black humour unfolds as his novel mocks the sad world of the big city, greedy neo-liberalism and the effects of globalisation. The moral imperative - which under the noisy surface of his books conveys a serious and at times melancholy picture - distinguishes Benni from proponents of pop literature. In his novel "Spiriti" (2000), a biting political satire of life in the 21st century, the author links the destinies of seventy different characters through countless plot threads and scenes in a mix of fairytale, utopia and the comic. The standard language and clichés found in politics and the media are mercilessly caricatured: "So, what do you think of that location? Shall we take it over live? Shall we put it all on the net? That is a twenty billion euro business, we'll contribute one of these to a good cause, the rest we'll fritter away ourselves", is how the "king of showbiz and propaganda" churns out his usual phrases as he relinquishes hold of the last little piece of earth. Benni's world of 2010 threatens to end in apocalypse due to globalised ultra-capitalism, environmental destruction, war and corruption, only to be saved by spirits. The writer has said, "I am neither an optimist nor a pessimist. I am merely clear sighted." Benni's novel "Achille pié veloce" (2003; t: The swift-footed Achilles) has recently been translated into German and tells the story of an unusual friendship between an editor hardly able to cope with life and a terminally ill, monstrous author. Full of fantastical twists and rich in a plethora of allusions to literature and politics, a touching story is told with dark humour and language that is at times chilling. Alongside his literary works, the author also writes columns for "Panorama" and "Il Manifesto". In 1989 he directed "Musica per vecchi animali" (1989; Eng. "Music for Old Animals") and took part in different theatre productions, including "Il bar sotto il mare" (t: The bar under the sea). Today Benni lives in his birthplace Bologna.
