Link11Alex Alvear Alex Alvear Alex Alvear Composer, arranger, bassist and singer, born in Quito, Ecuador. Getting kidnapped by the Ecuadorian secret police was the last “kick in the butt” for musician Alex Alvear. He left for the U.S. with seventy dollars in his pocket and has remained here ever since. Now, with the release of Equatorial (Alexalvear.com Records), an album that is a breakthrough for modern Ecuadorian music, Alvear’s connection to his home country has come back to life. The Andean, indigenous, and Spanish roots show through in a gently arranged modern palette of sounds. The result is a sweet collection of tunes with beautiful vocals, a lilting groove, and timeless acoustic melodies. Like many middle-class kids growing up in Quito, Ecuador (and thanks to a three hundred-year colonial legacy left by Spain and cultural alienation instigated by commercialism and American pop culture), Alvear hated everything Ecuadorian, he could name and recognize any rock band from the ’60’s through the ’80’s but could not hum one Ecuadorian song. He began playing rock ’n’ roll to later discover not only an array of Latin American musical styles but embracing Ecuadorian music without shame or prejudice. Fully adopting the rock rebel lifestyle, he lived off of an alley in a “hole in the wall” and used music to speak out against the government’s unjust practices. While still in Ecuador he co-founded the ground-breaking Promesas Temporales, a group that incorporated Rock and Jazz elements into traditional music, recording only 1,000 LPs at the time and later becoming an icon in the development of Ecuadorian music. As he became exposed to jazz and fusion, he wanted to learn more, but there were few opportunities at home so he started saving money with the hope of studying abroad. In December of 1985, he was kidnapped in broad daylight by the secret police of then right-wing president León Febres Cordero. His captors erroneously thought he was linked to a growing guerilla group, but because of their imprudent daylight capture, public protest led to Alvear’s freedom by the end of the day. Less than two weeks later Alvear bought a one-way ticket to the US. Soon after, Alvear found himself enrolled at the Berklee School of Music and launched into a career in Afro-Latin funk, Latin jazz, and salsa music in the Boston area. He recently realized, however, that something was missing. “When I wrote a recent pasillo [an Ecuadorian song form], I said, ‘Hold it, I already have six pasillos and all these sanjuanitos and albazos… this could be an album!” explains Alvear. “I also realized I had come full circle. All these years, I played Cuban music, but I’m not Cuban. I played Brazilian music, but I am not Brazilian. I played North American music, but I’m not really North American. I had been writing Ecuadorian songs for myself, as a way to remember. And now this is what I want to do. This finally makes sense with who I am.” Anyone who has heard Andean music will hear familiar elements on Alvear’s Equatorial, from pentatonic melodic motifs to Indigenous flutes like the dulcet bamboo quena and Ecuador’s unique brand of panpipes played by Quechua master flutist Roberto Cachimuel, from the syncopated beats of the sanjuanito cadence to the rhythmic use of acoustic guitar. But the most immediate reaction to Alvear’s two-decade slow sonic brew is that of timelessness and melodic soulfulness. Just as Peru’s Susana Baca and Colombia’s Totó La Momposina researched and updated the roots music of their homelands to reach new audiences, Alvear delicately brings in elements like jazz harmonies, tango instrumentation, Brazilian sensibilities, funky bass lines, and pop melodic structure to build a bridge between old and new, sometimes even sounding Beatlesesque. An early turning point in Alvear’s appreciation of Ecuador’s musical heritage occurred when he accompanied a filmmaker friend to the pueblo of Peguche in the northern province of Ecuador called Imbabura. “I brought my guitar and as soon as we stepped out of the van we were in the midst of a huge Indian celebration,” recalls Alvear. “It’s a weeklong solstice party they have every July with all this symbolism everywhere and, while it was officially the celebration of Saint John (San Juan, thus the name for sanjuanito), it had more to do with ancient beliefs than with Western religion. I had envisioned this little getaway, writing another pop ballad under a tree somewhere; I had no idea what I was getting myself into.” An old man with a harp caught the eye of Alvear. The man was playing a repetitive mantra-like motif and asked Alvear to join him. “I started jamming with him, but it’s just two chords ad nauseum,” Alvear remembers. “He was playing this simple pentatonic melody going around and around in circles. For five minutes, I was thinking, ‘What am I doing here?!’ But then it was like someone hit me in the head with a pan. Everything clicked and I realized how removed I was from a whole, amazing universe undervalued by the mestizo and white cultures that was under my nose the whole time.” Alvear spent the rest of the week in a joyous stupor playing music door to door with Ecuadorian and Bolivian musicians. The instrumental titled “Sanjuaneando”, which was born during that celebration captures the spirit of that experience. The more personal “Ausencia,” which means “Longing,” started out being about the sadness of a long-distance relationship. Writing it was like an exorcism of sorts, but later it took on a broader meaning of longing for anything. It could be longing for a place or anything that you love. Like many songs on the album, this one is extremely melancholic. “Pasillos are sort of like the blues,” explains Alvear “They are fatalistic. The blues will go, ‘My baby left me, life sucks, but here I am.’ But pasillo takes it a little further. Like tango it can often be tragic and fatalistic, but also unique for an underlying sense of sorrow. To help illustrate this Alvear says: “Most love songs talk about ‘If you ever leave me…’ A pasillo would more likely say, ‘the day you leave me.’ Pasillo, in some cases, will have a middle part that switches to a major key, where the mood gets kind of happy, but eventually the minor mood returns for the final blow.” Another song takes its name from Taita Imbabura, a striking mountain about a kilometer tall overlooking a lake in the province Imbabura, where many of the songs on the album were inspired. Taita in Quechua means “father,” and this mountain carries a lot of mystical weight among the surrounding people. “Taita Imbabura” is based on the yumbo rhythm which Alvear first heard performed by an Imbaburan group called Ñanda Mañachi. “I think of yumbo as war like,” says Alvear “It’s very earthy, like people stomping on the ground.” As the melody is repeated the arrangements shift, giving it a different feel each time around, eventually leading to one of the heaviest, rock feels on the album. Other highlights of the album are the vocals of Marta Gomez and lyrics by Margarita Laso on “Soñando con Quito,” a tribute to Alvear’s birth city; the cumulative grooves of “Esta Historia no es de Risa,” by Juan Carlos Gonzalez, one of the first to inspire Alvear to write original music; and, the very few jazz chords in “Flor de Kikuyo,” a song considered heretical when Alvear and Promesas Temporales first played this in Ecuador. The lasting impact of the collection of tunes is one of respect of tradition as well as pure song form. “I have been here in the States for twenty years,” says Alvear. “I think I have blended as much as any immigrant can blend and continue to contribute my part as a member of this society. But deep down inside there’s always been an undertone that as much as I have made a home here there is a longing for something I left behind. Ecuador is not a paradise. But it is still home, it is always with me. As much as I have blended into this culture, there is always something that reminds me, ‘You are not from here.’ I think that is the common immigrant experience. Writing this music for me was perhaps a subconscious way to not forget, to not lose that connection.” For the rest of us, Alvear has opened a door into a soulful, rich music tradition. In the process of soothing his own soul, Alvear has created a sonic bridge from America to a small underexposed diverse musical nation.

Link11Zoot Horn Rollo Zoot Horn Rollo Zoot Horn Rollo William Earl Harkleroad Born: 8th January 1949, Hawthorne, nr Long Beach, C.A., USA American guitarist & arranger, most renowned for his work in The Magic Band, fronted by [a=Captain Beefheart]. He was later a founder-member of [a=Mallard]. Harkleroad began his musical career as a somewhat recalcitrant child, learning the accordion, drums and then plucking a few tunes on his sister's ukulele in his early teens. His first gig was with a borrowed Silvertone and his first acquistion was a Fender Duosonic, played in high-school bands such as The Polaras, The Nighthawks and The Plague. By 1964 his hair had grown - a mark of fashion in the 60's - and the 15 year-old Harkleroad became a member of BC & The Cavemen, along with [a=Mark Boston] on bass & PG Blakely on drums. Harkleroad's father worked in aircraft production for Douglas and North American so, by this time, the family had moved to Palmdale - near to the plant that would eventually become Edwards Airforce Base. After circulating among the disaffected teenagers out in the wilds of Antelope Valley, among them [a=Frank Zappa], [a=John French], [a=Jeff Cotton] and [a=Don Van Vliet], Harkleroad had a chance to demonstrate his virtuosity to early members of The Magic Band. On graduating from high-school he then gigged for a period out at Lake Tahoe and then had the opportunity to audition for what would become the line-up on Trout Mask Replica. This was prior to the band being ensconced in the renowned 'Magic Band House' on Entrada Drive in Woodland Hills. He recorded three tracks at Sunset Sound with Cotton, French and Rising Sons bassist Gary Marker - these were "Moonlight On Vermont", "Veteran's Day Poppy" and "Kandy Korn". The latter did not appear on the subsequent album, but the first two were edited into the final album take at T.T.G. It was at this time that Harkleroad was given his 'Zoot Horn Rollo' title by Don Van Vliet. He also claims, in his well-documented book Lunar Notes: Zoot Horn Rollo's Captain Beefheart Experience by Bill Harkleroad & Billy James, that he only had his flute at the house, but never actually played it on the recording of TMR. Like many members of the now rotating Magic Band, Harkleroad endured the ups-and-downs of life under the spell of the Mercurial 'Captain Beefheart'. In 1974 he briefly teamed up with a rare reappearance of Alex St. Clair in The Magic Band for the album Unconditionally Guaranteed. This was followed by a mass exodus of the band members, who had to be replaced for the support-tour. However, after various gigs out at Blue Lake without Vliet, the remnants of this group with Harkelroad formed themselves into [a=Mallard]. A band that was given much assistance by [a85485], both financially and in terms of providing his mobile recording facilities for the sessions in the UK. After Mallard broke-up, Harkleroad moved to Oregon and eventually moved into a role of guitar-tutoring. He has also done work with [a180275] and Billy James - aka [a1312260].

Link11Glamatron! Glamatron! Glamatron! Rude Van Steenes' Glamatron! was the antithesis of his previous Toronto punk act Arson. Channeling his anger into a New Wave stew of his heroes from the seventies like Bowie, Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan & T-Rex, in image while singing songs of isolation and experimentation that was distinctly Euro flavoured. The band did only three shows: one at the Domino Klub in Toronto, one for a live CBC new music series, and a college show. They were aloof and secretive to the point of re-buffing CITY-TV's 'New Music' show host Jeanne Bekker who had wanted an interview during their Domino Klub show. 'Only The Heart Beats...Inside The Silence' was their only release. Local rock station Q107-FM played their instrumental track called "Passport" in light rotation.

Link02Coolhaven Coolhaven NetherlandsCoolhaven Coolhaven Coolhaven is a band based on the principle of diabetics. Their music is inspired by the disturbance of balance between centrifugal and centripetal energies. The first and last thing Coolhaven has is some kind of concept or idea about how the noises they make should sound. They think the idea of making ‘good' music is kind of obsolete. There could be improvisation (utterly and totally composed) involved, or badly played dutch tribal polka blues. It's the moment that counts, not fame or respect from future generations of cd-listeners. Their first records sounded like some kind of lo-fi techno ambient country and western and in the beginning of 2003 they released their first feature album; “Blue Moustache” , inspired by electronic music, bullshit generators and flying trapeze's. At this moment their interests lays more in the exploitation-genre field. Their recent projects include something called ‘Strömblock Phantasieën' with German lyrics by David Hasselhof and visuals by Martijn Van Boven, a collaboration with Beautiful Young German Electro Pop Star Felix Kubin, an ungoing ‘electrosoap' called ‘STROMBOLI and lots of other ways to strange and inventive use of soup, words and sound. The members ; Hajo Doorn ; He used to play with Veryan Weston, and in the notorious group ‘The Lost Lovers. And Dull Schicksal. He's some kind of director at WORM , and his writing alter ego is called ‘Raoul Goudvis. Lukas Simonis ; Sometimes calls himself 'musician'. Played/plays in Dull Schicksal, Apricot My lady, Liana Flu Winks and Trespassers W. Also works at WORM where he has a 'free' role. Just Like in the bible. Peter Fengler ; His other group is called ‘Pool Mongool ‘ .And besides that he's a visual artist. And besides that he still has a nice body. And besides that he has a club called DE PLAYER in the former red-light district of Rotterdam. But they do art there nowadays.

Link02Teknicity Teknicity Teknicity Jelle Kaizer This Dutch hardtechno producer and dj, born in 1987, was intrigued by dance music at a very early stage of his life. At the age of 6 he already enjoyed music by 2unlimited and this fascination for electronic music never disappeared. After listening to a lot of different styles his quest for music was concluded after the discovery of hardtechno. At the age of 14 he bought his first turntables and not much later he also got the hang of producing. Nowadays, being one of the youngest hardtechno producers around, his release-list keeps on growing. With tracks on labels such as Animasola Records (owned by Viper XXL) and Crowbar recordings (from DJ Amok) and many more, he has already demonstrated his dark and energetic style in the hardtechno scene. With many more releases to come and a love for electronic music that will always remain this will certainly not be the last time you hear from Teknicity.

Born Lester Kinsey in Pleasant Grove, Mississippi, United States, he was a slide guitarist and harp blower with roots in both the Mississippi Delta and post-war Chicago Blues styles. Kinsey worked with local bands only long enough for his sons to mature into top-flight musicians, and since 1984 (when Kinsey recorded his debut album, Bad Situation) the family act has become one of the hottest attractions in contemporary blues. Kinsey's material ranged from deep blues in the Muddy Waters vein to hard-rocking blues with touches of funk and reggae, courtesy of sons Donald and Ralph. In the early 1990s Kinsey released one of the most successful albums of his career, I Am the Blues which featured contributions from Buddy Guy, James Cotton, Sugar Blue and Pinetop Perkins.

Link11Bodykomplex Bodykomplex FinlandBodykomplex Bodykomplex was formed in 2012 when two guys from Northern Finland decided to make a few oldschool style EBM songs just for fun. When they noticed that people were listening, they decided to make more songs. The stories behind the lyrics come from the tales of everyday life, told in somewhat humorous way. Lyrics are made in Finnish because it comes naturally and sounds awesome. “It’s all about The glory of manliness, having fun and not taking life too seriously.” Karma [debut album] will be released on 16th October 2015.

Link11Spaceraider Spaceraider PolandTomasz GillertSpaceraider Thomas Gillert (Tomasz Gillert) Spaceraider is a synthdance project made by polish electronic musician Tomasz Gillert. He started his musical adventure in the 80's, thanks to his interest in electronic music and computers. He bought an ATARI 800XL and started to create first simple tracks with Sound Studio software. Then he switched to Timex (ZX Spectrum clone) with AY chip. The next great step in Spaceraider's sonic evolution was an Amiga 500. Protracker software allowed Thomas to create many complex tracks. He was also very active at polish demo-scene, taking part in many module competitions. Then the PC era came... Being sceptical at first, Tomasz changed his mind when he discovered Fasttracker software on PC. He started to make multichannel XM modules with 16-bit samples. Nowadays Spaceraider uses Fruity Loops software with various plugins along with Roland's master keyboard - this combination allows for professional results. His dream was to present his synthdance music to a wider audience, which was made possible with the release of Spaceraider's first record through AXIS Records label. Tomasz now composes new synthdance tracks, one of them is featured on AXIS Megamix Vol.1.

Link11Mutantes Melancólicos Mutantes Melancólicos Mutantes Melancólicos Conceived in 1992, Mutantes Melancólicos is the project behind Gustavo Madrid´s mastermind. The one he used as a vehicle to create new ways of making music without losing his personal imprint; pushing towards constant change and evolution. Guest musicians, free improvisation as the expressive force, and no formulas repeated led him to transform a style that was already his own. The first traces of this project can be heard on a recorded version of “Dirt”, a song by The Stooges, that remains unreleased. Some critics claimed to find the influence of the appetite for low-budget productions; others found a dark spirit without optimism. We can say that both points of view are accurate to describe this group´s sound, but when a bit of black comedy is added as a third ingredient to blend and empower the mix, that´s when this mutant music is brought to life. The first one of his 5 albums was published on cassette in 1993 and some of his songs appeared in 2 compilation albums: Unknown BA on Beat Records and Petronilo, an underground fanzine. Today, each one of those 5 original productions is available for the first time on CD with previously unreleased bonus tracks; besides, a sixth album with 16 tracks of unpublished material is added to the discography. Housed in carefully designed vinyl record replica covers, audio digitally remastered from the original stereo master tapes; each title is published in strictly limited editions of 1000 to document the career of a genuine artist whose commitment leads towards new and different sounds.

Link11Unstoppable Achievers Unstoppable Achievers LondonUnstoppable Achievers Unstoppable Achievers are a Magical endeavour by 2 grown men who should know better, Mr Matthew James Saw (Guitars, Shoutings, Stylophone, Egg Harp, Drones, Miscellaneous) and Mr Kevin Matthews (Drummings, Percussion, Shoutings, Atari Consoles, Harmonica, Buddhas, Miscellaneous). With mutton under loving skies, They decided to use Greenery to extort tunes from exhaust fumes and you-you folstery, thus to make the Whirled a better place, and to make Unstoppable Achievers of you all. They began by using their arms and legs respectively to make sub-rhythmic undulations, briney guitars and words often about animals or the sea. This They liked, and so did some other strange people, so They did it more. They performed in hovels, shops, public houses, in a field, and sometimes psychically using their hive mind. Sigils were made, a motto was conjured, 'Empty Your Pockets And Be Modern!' and things began to slot in place. You join Unstoppable Achievers at what is still the beginning of a long and fruitful journey... MIND YOUR HEADS

In the years 2010/2011 we switched our style to become a new Industrial Metal/Crossover act in the scene! Now we get new inspriration by bands like Slipknot (New Metal), Ministry (Trash Metal) and old/later Pouppée Fabrikk. So our goal is to find a sound/style that is hard as Slipknot, got simple guitar riffs like Ministry combiened with the later/old PF-spirit!

Link11Ryan Stinson Ryan Stinson CanadaRyan Stinson Canadian hip hop producer Ryan Stinson has self-produced yet another charming EP—the latest, “FUTURA,” released through his own label Phonographique. With his home- base in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Stinson made a second home for himself in Vancouver to produce and record “FUTURA,” which features Juno-nominated Ghettosocks and members of Vancouver’s Henry Hudson Elementary School choir, and strongly echoes artistic influences from his surroundings on the West Coast. The 31-year-old hip hop producer and graphic designer was born in Saskatoon but grew up in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. He started creating beats in the late 90s at age 16 but has been doing it more seriously for the past seven years. A three-time grant recipient of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, Stinson’s debut, self-produced LP “Open Mic” was released in 2006 and features Moka Only, Muneshine and Emilio Rojas. In 2010 Stinson collaborated with Chapter Thrive on an album titled “20 Something,” also released through Phonographique, and over the past few years, his production has been featured on a variety of albums from both Canadian and American hip hop artists. Saskatchewan can now claim Phonographique alongside bunny hug and Vi-Co.

Link11Sunny Hawkins Sunny Hawkins Sunny Hawkins Oakland, California-born singer Sunny Hawkins was performing almost from the time she could work, beginning at age 2 at Love Center Ministries in Oakland, California with her godparents, gospel legends Walter and Tramaine Hawkins. She continued performing through her teen years, ultimately singing around the country in various venues. As a young adult, she landed a lead role in the Broadway musical Rent with *NSYNC's Joey Fatone, and backing vocal gigs with Chaka Khan, Deborah Cox, Ray Charles, Patti LaBelle and Luther Vandross. She also developed strong songwriting skills, penning Aretha Franklin's 2003 hit "The Only Thing Missin," and "Good Lovin" from Patti LaBelle's 2004 album, Timeless Journey. She married hot young producer/writer/musical director Jamie Hawkins (Jodeci, MC Hammer, Donnell Jones, Boyz II Men, Lauren Hill), who was also Walter and Tramaine's son. Jamie and Sunny began collaborating musically, and in 2004 started working on a joint album, attempting to fashion a modern Gospel album that brought in elements of soul, rock and hip-hop in addition to traditional Gospel sounds. In early 2005 Sunny released the result of their work in the form of her debut album, More of You. More of You is an ambitious disc that highlights Sunny's bright soprano voice in a number of disparate styles, from the funky rock title cut, to the light disco beat of "Love Me Too," to the more neo-soul feel of many of the album's other cuts. Hawkins' ventures in Deniece Williams-type ballads ("Send Me I'll Go" and "It's Like Air") work exceptionally well, as does the jazzy Latin-tinged "Jesus the Same." The album's biggest surprise is also it's focus song: the power pop ballad "What A Man," a cut clearly aimed at CCM radio and with a resulting sound similar to that of a more pop oriented act, such as Point of Grace. As a debut vehicle, More of You provides a good landscape for Hawkins' attractive, effective voice and allows her to roam through a broad cross-section of modern sounds and generally good compositions. A solid introduction to a talented vocalist.

Link11Sensorband Sensorband Sensorband Atau Tanaka, Edwin Van Der Heide, Zbigniew Karkowski Sensorband was a trio of musicians using interactive technology. Gestural interfaces - ultrasound, infrared, and bioelectric sensors - become musical instruments. The group, [a=Edwin van der Heide], [a=Zbigniew Karkowski], [a=Atau Tanaka], each soloists on their instruments for over six years, formed Sensorband to create a performance ensemble. Edwin plays the MIDIconductor, machines worn on his hands that send and receive ultrasound signals, measuring the hands' rotational positions of and relative distance. Zbigniew activates his instrument by the movement of his arms in the space around him. This cuts through invisible infrared beams mounted on a scaffolding structure. Atau plays the BioMuse, a system that tracks neural signals (EMG), translating electrical signals from the body into digital data. Together, Sensorband creates a live group dynamic, bringing a visceral physical element to interactive technologies. Sensorband's projects center around the theme of physicality and human control/discontrol in relation with technology. The original website (http://www.sensorband.com/) is not available.

Express. His volume of work contains over 100 discographic credits and has recorded, performed and collaborated with artists across a wide range of musical styles including Charlie Hunter, Joe Bataan, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Manu DiBango, Pete Rodriguez, Richie Ray, BeatFanatic, Faze Action, Roy Davis Jr., Diesler, Lack of Afro, Simbad and with members of groups such as Matisyahu, King Sunny Ade, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Brownout, DJ Logic, Antibalas, and many others. Lugo grew up in “Golden Era” New York City, immersed in the vibrant and diverse art and music scenes that influenced his work over the years and shaped the strong DIY ethic he is known for. He has performed live in over 35 countries on many legendary stages, from CBGB’s, Glastonbury, and Bonaroo to London’s Forum, The Montreal Jazz Festival and New York’s Lincoln Center. In 2001 he formed the Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, after becoming intrigued by West African Funk and the the music of Fela Kuti. Kokolo would go on to become a spearhead of the Nu-Afrobeat global movement and perform live all over the world. In 2011, Lugo set out to explore his long-held interest in the classic “Boogaloo” sound of 1960’s New York, eventually forming Ray Lugo & The Boogaloo Destroyers in 2011, culminating with the group’s critically-acclaimed debut album, “Mi Watusi”, which has been broadly celebrated by connoisseurs, fans and DJ’s alike. Their second album, “Que Chevere!”, broadened the band’s global appeal and saw them embraced in a wide range of new countries. In 2012, he debuted his first solo album, “We Walk Around Like This”, embracing the sounds of Bahia, Lagos, Kingston, San Juan, and Harlem all under one umbrella and further echoing Lugo’s eclectic tastes. In 2015, Lugo formed a new project “Terrificos” in collaboration with film composer Jake Fader that blends Psychedelic Chicha and cumbia with Spaghetti-Western cinematic sounds.
