Link | 2 | 2 | Go Four 3 | Go Four 3 | Go Four 3 | Go Four 3 Originally called The Debutantes, Go Four 3 (an airforce term meaning 'landing on an aircraft carrier': on scope, on target, perfect landing) formed in Vancouver,British Columbia,Canada in 1983 and became a staple of that city's live scene when they were discovered in 1985 by Zulu Records. Their six song self-titled EP in 1985 was produced by Rob Obvious with pre-production work by Greg Reely and Ric Arboit. Original drummer Ian Noble left soon after to be replaced by "Ike". The EP sold 1500 copies and went Top-5 on most campus radio stations across Canada. Following their 5th cross Canada tour they recorded their 1987 follow-up LP 'Six Friends' for Zulu. Ike had been replaced by Rob Tomkow on drums who, in turn, was replaced part-way through the sessions by original drummer Ian Noble. The band relocated to Toronto in 1988 to start recording what was intended to be their third album with producer Chris Wardman (Chalk Circle, Blue Peter). Drummer Ian Noble quit and returned to Vancouver after becoming homesick. He was replaced by NEOA4's Joel Anderson in 1989. The band ended up going to England and remixing some of the songs from those sessions with Chris Wardman. At the request of management in the UK the band changed its name to Thrill Squad. Some of the tracks from the Wardman sessions were eventually released on the Thrill Squad cd 'It's Party Time'.

As a young boy, Hukwe Zawose's voice stood apart from the rest of his people, the Wagogo, who always sang while harvesting their fields. Soon he would travel to other villages to amuse working Tanzanian people. Later, having grown exponentially as a singer, he travelled farther and wider, leaving behind legends of his astonishing five-octave voice everywhere he went. He grew as a musician too, playing the ilimba (a large thumb piano), filimbi (a traditional flute), izezes (traditional violins) and nguga (ankle bells). Zawose became sort of a living legend after being asked to perform for the prime minister, Julius Nyerere. Fantastic stories of mythical power rose, making Zawose an immortal and divine being; his voice possessed magical healing powers. Despite his great fame he continued to live his life traditionally with his four wives and fifteen children, one of whom, Charles, was his constant companion on stage. Hukwe Zawose is considered a pioneer and one of the most famous musicians in the world music scene.

Link | 3 | 1 | Hope Drone | Hope Drone | Hope Drone | Atmospheric Black Metal, Post-Metal, Post-Rock Sludge band from Brisbane, Australia Australian death metal may be a hot topic right now, but the Oceanian continent has yet to see many black metal bands (other than perhaps Woods of Desolation) crawl up from out of the underworld. Brisbane newcomer HOPE DRONE is in a position to change that status with its distinctive blend of dense atmospheres and withering, spacious blackness. Formed in 2011 by guitarists Karl Hartwig and Christopher Rowden, drummer Francis Kell, and bassist Aaron “Peege” Pickersgill, the band burst onto the scene with its 2013 self-titled EP, which was hailed by Cvlt Nation as “fresh, invigorating, and compelling” and called “possibly the most devastatingly nihilistic recording I’ve ever heard” by Angry Metal Guy. After supporting acts like Neurosis, Deafheaven, Caspian, and Rosetta in Australia, HOPE DRONE recorded its sophomore record, again employing the talents of engineer Christopher Brownbill (who also produced the band’s debut). The band has stated that it aims for HOPE DRONE to serve as an outlet for personal catharsis that musically focuses on atmosphere, and their 2015 Relapse debut Cloak of Ash more than fulfills those goals. Cloak of Ash is an unrelenting and calculated 80minute monster that will undoubtedly put listeners to the test, but, like all the bestdesigned challenges, rewards those intrepid fans that brave its drawnout melancholy. HOPE DRONE’s music may seem hopeless on the surface, but the band’s despondency is relatable and undiluted, breathing light into an otherwise bleak landscape. A monumental debut, Cloak of Ash has already seen coverage from platforms like Decibel and Sputnikmusic, and stands to see HOPE DRONE cement itself as one of the forerunners of modern Australian black metal. Chris Rowden (Guitar, Vocals) Karl Hartwig (Guitar, Noise) Aaron Pickersgill (Bass) Francis Keil (Drums)

While in the group, GhosMerck has rocked stages for the likes of Memphis Bleek, Swizz Beats, Young LA, Rah Digga, and Styles P. GhosMerck has also graced the stage before the Legendary Rakim, who complimented him on his unorthodox style. Tavaris has also worked with some of the industry’s Platinum selling producers such as Roosevelt "Binkdog" Harrell lll, and Nottz Raw. To add to his accomplishments, Grammy Award Winning Music Supervisor, Paul Stewart, selected 3 songs written by Ghosmerck for licensing, plus one of his recent tracks was chosen for inclusion on Fuse TV in 2013. Due to his unorthodox style and clever word play, GhosMerck has been coined as Andre 3000's protégé. Writing singles like "Love Express”, “Playground to the Mic check", (which is featured on DTP's Disturbing Tha Streetz Mix tape)," Down" and more than 85% of the songs performed by the group ILL INDIES, it became clear it was time to make a change. Along with the change came a driven, more focused GhosMerck, determined to show the world his individuality. His lyrical style and quick/ slick cadence makes you want to rewind those verses of his over and over. GhosMerck has a style and sound that has him in a lane all by himself recently catching the attention of powerhouses, Timbaland and Missy Elliott, landing him a spot on the coveted Timbaland Thursdays website. If you want to hear a real lyricist, make sure you follow GhosMerck on his journey to becoming the next big thing in hip hop.

Salim started self teaching electric guitar and music production from 1999. Salim has found himself composing in genres like art rock, rock in opposition, progressive metal and jazz-fusion - with tinges of oriental music according to critics. Harmonie Magazine compared his guitar playing to King Crimson's Robert Fripp and labled by Artrock.pl as "Persian King Crimson". He is the producer, composer and performer of all instruments in his instrumental music. He has coined the term "Pictorial Rock" as a description of his compositions which is also the title of his blog: "Pictorial rock" he says "is a term I use for my music that is usually based on series of mental images, a nightmare or maybe dreams of a sound sleep... As a listener, you have to wait for the pictures to materialize in your mind!" However Salim has had little chance to expand his music career in his hometown, he has regularly kept on working. While in Arashk band he released Abrahadabra (2006), Sovereign (2007) and Ustuqus-al-Uss (2008). Afterwards he released Iconophobic (2010), Human Encounter (2011) and namoWoman (2012) as a one-man-band. His albums are concept albums hiring elements of classical and electronic music and progressive rock with diversified use of instruments.

Link | 3 | 1 | Octeto Buenos Aires | Octeto Buenos Aires | Argentina | Octeto Buenos Aires | In 1955, Astor Piazzolla returns to Buenos Aires, where he forms an orchestra, which plays until 1958, called the Octeto Buenos Aires. This octet is a marked departure from the standard quintet; two bandoneóns (Astor Piazzolla and Leopoldo Federico), two violins (Enrico Mario Francini and Hugo Baralis), a double bass (Juan Vasallo), a cello (José Bragato), a piano (Atilio Stampone), and an electric guitar (Horacio Malvicino) - it marks the birth of Tango Nuevo! Unfortunately traditional tangueros despise the music and there is fierce criticism of the genre: a common quote that would follow Astor around is that "Piazzolla is not tango". Furthermore he is running short of funds; so to record he has to sign away all royalties. He is bitter on this point, as his monetary problems would continue whilst the coffers of the producers were filling as a result of the Octeto's recordings. Natalio Gorin describes the Octeto Buenos Aires as having: “Featured new rhytmic and sound effects, string counterpoint, a violin that sounded like a drum, the cello and the bass as low drums, formidable soloists, and an aggressive electric guitar improvising in most of the pieces... Some arrangements suggested disrespect... The hundred fans of the Octeto howled with pleasure wherever the group played... The rejection was to be expected, partially because of natural tendencies against anything new and because of traditional tango’s deep roots in the community.

Link | 3 | 1 | Bolu2 Death | Bolu2 Death | Spain | Bolu2 Death | BOLU2 DEATH was created in 2008 in the city of Huelva (Spain). They started as a parallel band to have fun with, to make crazy music and fusing styles like hardcore, metal, flamenco, electronics, etc. Their first demo, QUENODECAIGA (2009), was a great success and allowed them to do their first concerts, at the finals of the "32 Rock Villa de Madrid" and their performance at the Universimad. Because of this they decided to go for their first studio album, AVIATE (2011), recorded at End Studios and mastered in Masterdisk New York. With the single "Brutalidandaluza" they showed their intention to be an original reference in the national underground scene, but problems with the manager and the departure of one of the singers made the promotion curb. Without rest they raised their head up and began to compose their second studio album, "CHEWING YOUR TEETH" (2013), recorded once again at End Studios, mixed and mastered by Alex Cappa (Metal Factory Studios). With him they underpin the sound that characterizes them. Some topics consolidate flamencore style and after their singles "La estamos liando.", "Modernformers" and "Hate Crew Flamencore" began to reach all the nooks and ears, traveling venues all over Spain and participating at festivals like Alburock, Rock in Ria , Revolution Fest, ... They show a strong, brutal and energetic live show that leaves no one indifferent. Currently after a new change in the formation they enter to record their third studio album, "Dualitas" (2016), mixed and mastered by Alex Cappa once again. This album aims to be the consolidation of the band, for their important musical evolution and maturity.

Link | 1 | 3 | Zuzu Bollin | Zuzu Bollin | United States | Zuzu Bollin | Zuzu Bollin (September 5, 1922 – October 2, 1990) was an American Texas blues guitarist and singer from Frisco, Texas. Originally named A.D. Bollin, the name 'Zuzu' is believed to refer to a brand of ginger-snap cookies popular at the time. Bollin notably recorded "Why Don't You Eat Where You Slept Last Night" and "Headlight Blues" (1951), and variously worked alongside Duke Robillard, Doug Sahm, Booker Ervin, Percy Mayfield and David "Fathead" Newman. Bollin was thought to be dead, until he was rediscovered in 1988 living in Dallas, Texas, by the Dallas Blues Society Records founder, Chuck Nevitt. Nevitt gathered together a band and produced Bollin's first full length album Texas Bluesman in 1989, as the debut release on Dallas Blues Society Records. This record was sold to Antones Records a couple of years later, and Antones released it on compact disc. This recording augmented Bollin's only four sides (two 78rpm records) recorded in the early 1950s on the Dallas based Torch Records label. Bollin made festival dates both in the United States and abroad. Bollin died in Dallas, Texas in October 1990, aged 68.

The music he had to play wasn't his kind of music though. This all changed when a friend of him visited him with a 1983 record containing bands like 'the West Street Mob' and 'kraftwerk'. From that moment his love for electronic music was born. He started focusing on electronic based music in the most intensive way possible. He bought a drumcomputer, a tapedeck and a fairly cheap synthesiser. With these machines he started to do remixes of the accapela tracks found on the records he had. After a while he started to focus on the art of cutting and pasting tapes. This was a cheap alternative to a sampler, which was very expensive to own in those days. In 1987 he came in touch with illegal records from Ibiza, which were sold 'under the counter'. Records from people like 'Farley Jackmaster Funk' and 'Steve Silk Hurley'. This was the eye-opener he needed. He was sold. From that moment he started creating his own tracks. Some of them were recorded just for fun. A friend heard those recordings and took the tapes to a record company. The release of his first track became a fact. Together with his good friend Rob, he started 'Shiver' en 'DAP'. On Shiver they released techno and electro tracks while on DAP the real ACID tracks were released. Both Shiver and DAP stopped releasing in 1996. New 12" release scheduled on the Doctor Break label for January 2005

Numerous musicians passed through the band, including: Richard Aubert (violin) and drummers: Gilbert Artman and Michel Bourgheix. Komintern were close in style to the early Maajun (Mahjun), and many other French Zappa inspired bands, with hints of East Of Eden, old folk and protest songs, satire and wicked invention, all in an extremely progressive concoction. Historically seminal too, with Gilbert Artman forming [a358995], Richard Aubert going on to Atoll and Kool Gool, and Olivier Zdralik becoming a key member of Malicorne.

The conceptual "V" stands for many themes but, most of all, the letter symbolizes freedom because its shape reminds a "flying bird", a gull. They chose the introspective, oriental-oriented personality of Fabius Shiva as keyboards player. Luca Bravaccino is the drummer. V-Device's first album "Calling Europe" has been released on the 20th of January 2012 in collaboration with Vipchoyo Studio and Love&Craft. Link | 3 | 1 | Liblikas | Liblikas | Tallinn | Liblikas | A Psychedelic-Progressive metal band called "Liblikas" from Estonia, that can be described as having influences from Stoner rock, Sludge metal, Thrash metal and occasionally Jazz Of their many influences, it would probably be most appropriate to bring out Mastodon, Baroness, The Sword and probably Frank Zappa and King Crimson. The band convened in 2010 and the first 18 months were a period of experimenting and finding that own special niche. The original idea was to make all-out old-school thrash metal, but as their minds broadened, they realized it did not make an awful lot of sense to remain stuck in one genre if the band could mix all the wonderful styles they loved together. The band name "Liblikas" is the Estonian word for "butterfly". A creature with a hideous and revolting body who only becomes beautiful with the addition of a set of colorful wings. Link | 1 | 3 | Ostkreutz | Ostkreutz | Germany | Ostkreutz | Ostkreutz employs an "audiovisual terror" style of electro-rock that is a multimedia assault on the senses. The Berlin-based act, named after one of the city's primary S-Bahn (i.e., suburban metro railway) lines, was begun in 2004 by the masked one who calls himself Maximum. By and large, the music of Ostkreutz is the creation of Maximum, who is the band's guitarist, engineer, songwriter, and conceptualist. While Maximum is the musical mastermind behind Ostkreutz, the visual mastermind is one who calls himself Medium. There is also Optimum, who is a drummer. The monikers chosen by these three bandmembers are in line with the overall aim of Ostkreutz, which is to inspire curiosity through various mediums. Besides the electro-rock music of Ostkreutz, for instance, the bandmembers fashion themselves with storm trooper-style masks and nondescript work suits; perform multimedia-driven concerts in this attire; create striking videos for television and the Internet; host a puzzling network of websites; and embrace propaganda. The band's vocals are sparse and stark, mixing German with English. Ostkreutz released a maxi-CD, Gangbang, on Warner in April 2006 in anticipation of their full-length debut, Motor, which was released in September. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Link | 1 | 3 | Gerostenkorp | Gerostenkorp | Gerostenkorp | Daniel Larose Gerostenkorp is a music project developed by Daniel Larose since September 2002. Through much collaboration, his music became a kind of solitary escape on records as on stage. Using original instruments, like didgeridoo, but also drones, electronic parts or concrete sounds, the cinematic music from Gerostenkorp is a sensitive and enigmatic journey throughout the realms of industrial sounds. The instruments vary according to the location: metallic structures, whispers, ghostly voices and human movements are gathered to create an animate and abstract theater haunted by static forms. Gerostenkorp is a music dedicated to the living moment, using sonic experiments like classical elements to give the listener the opportunity to build their own vision. After several collaborations with musicians and video makers, Gerostenkorp releases its first album called « Le mécanisme de l’aube » through OPN records & Cauldron Music. A multimedia project is started in 2007 in collaboration with les « hommes-tableaux» from Amiens and leads Daniel to compose the second Gerostenkorp recording called « Terre brûlée».

Lucia M. Faroutan was drafted to lend keyboards and additional vocals to the latter, but Heidenreich was subsequently shelved while its driving forces refocused their energies on Abigor's more straightforward black metal releases. After touring all around the world with several bands (FIREWIND, ULI JON ROTH, VINNIE MOORE, KEE MARCELLO) and writing songs for German metallers METALIUM, Japanese female metal-vocalist SAEKO or ZED YAGO-founder JUTTA WEINHOLD, he realised his vision of an own band by writing, recording and producing LOVE.MIGHT.KILL´s debut album BRACE FOR IMPACT. In addition with the brilliant Italian singer JAN MANENTI as a co-writer, longtime friends CHRISTIAN STÖVER and STEFAN ELLERHORST (who both played in German-based metal band CROSSROADS) on guitars, JOGI SWEERS on bass and former MOB RULES-keyboardist SASCHA ONNEN LOVE.MIGHT.KILL´s outstanding line-up was completed. BRACE FOR IMPACT features 12 (the Japanese version 13) stunning melodic metal tracks in the tradition of the band´s longtime favourites like f.e. RAINBOW, JUDAS PRIEST, DIO or BLACK SABBATH. Michael´s production and MARKUS TESKE´s mix (SAGA, VANDEN PLAS, SPOCK´S BEARD) underlined the fact that LOVE.MIGHT.KILL´s debut album convinced all melodic metal maniacs all around the world. BRACE FOR IMPACT was released via MASSACRE RECORDS (Europe) and HYDRANT MUSIC (Japan). In 2012 the band released their second album 2 BIG 2 FAIL, which followed the tradition of their first record. Like their debut it was released via MASSACRE RECORDS (Europe) and HYDRANT MUSIC (Japan) but also via eONE (USA) and got the best reviews all around the world. |

Link | 1 | 3 | Peggy's Leg | Peggy's Leg | Ireland | Peggy's Leg | Formed by ace guitarist Jimi Slevin, ex of Alice / Brogue towards the end of 1972, Peggy's Leg were known for their adaptations of classical music. Their live set included covers of Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer as well as music by Bach ("a blistering rendition of Bach's Sinfonia from Cantata Nr. 29"), Katchaturian ("Sabre Dance"), Rossini ("William Tell Overture") and Handel. Their self-released album "Grinilla" came out in late 1973. Managed by John Donohue (Mushroom) who is credited with organising the recording of their self-released album that came out in 1973: "This is one of the rarest albums of the seventies. Peggy's Leg were an Irish classical rock outfit and their sole album was recorded in just 23 hours. 500 copies were pressed originally and as most were sold to local fans, originals are extremely difficult to locate nowadays, particularly with the inner lyric sheet. The album consisted of six tracks and, aside from an unadventurous cover version of Love Sculpture's Sabre Dance, they comprised self-penned compositions which forged frantic heavy rock sections with soft dreamlike passages into a series of well structured songs. They also recorded a pretty frantic and indeed demented version of the William Tell Overture, which was put out on a 45."--Kissing Spell PR blurb. The distinctive cover artwork for "Grinilla" was designed by Bad Taste Productions, i.e. Tim Booth of Dr.Strangely Strange. The album release was preceded by a headling concert at Liberty Hall in Dublin on October 24th.

Link | 3 | 1 | Östblocket | Östblocket | Östblocket | It's taken a while, but now the voluptuous attractions of the odd-numbered time signatures and improvising possibilities of Balkan and other East European music (and also the similarly liberating, and to some extent related, delights of Middle Eastern music), and the high, exciting skill involved, are proving as enticing to many musicians outside those regions as the syncopation and freedom of jazz did for their parents and grandparents' generations. The music that is emerging sometimes sticks close to its traditional sources, but more often incorporates them with the musicians' own musical perceptions to spark tangents and departures, a genetic shuffling and re-energising that seems to be evolving a wave of strong new music in Europe and beyond. And the excitement about these exotic musics involves an admiration and seeking-out of music and musicians, and can undoubtedly help break down and humanise perceptions of the rich variety of people arriving in western Europe from the east. Eleven-piece Östblocket's music isn't Balkan clonery but a distinctive new mix with a strong influence of the forms, language and oompah bounce of klezmer, even in the Rom and original material. Carving its own path with confidence and style, it's snappy and excellently played, a powerful, well-recorded and varied sound from a five-piece brass section, sax, accordeon, percussion and drums, with violinist and composer of much of the material Filip Runesson doubling on oud, santur and mandola. No string bass; in the style of Serbian and Macedonian brass bands the bottom end is handled by tuba and euphonium. About half the tracks are songs, featuring vocals by Sofia Berg-Böhm in Yiddish and other languages that are as impressive as is the band itself. Swedish rapper Timbuktu guests effectively, as do Bulgarian accordeonist Plamen Dimitrov and a Swedish choir. Smart stuff, and in an ingeniously designed package. –

Link | 1 | 3 | The 2930s | The 2930s | The 2930s | Introducing to you… The 2930s Guss Brooks, The Stig and The Josh are The Twentynine-Thirties from Dresden and Berlin. The 2930s first E.P. “The Ride”, released in 2010, received a 5 star rating in Dynamite Magazine for its “mix of blues, garage and rockabilly” and “diversified arrangements far from every standard”. With the release of “RTH/TTL”, which was also recorded and mixed at Sonnenstudio, Berlin, the band continues with more punk, garage and 60’s influences in their song writing. Taking their name from the date of their first concert almost five years ago, in-between his duties with Berlin’s The BossHoss, Guss Brooks (bass) works on the side project he started along side Australian guitarist and song writer The Josh. The Stig (drums) completes the trio of rock and roll misfits. Tour highlights have included support shows with Triggerfinger and The BossHoss, and the band was invited by The H-Blockx at the Redbull Stage at Rock im Park in 2012 and since then the band has performed at Berlin’s Roadrunners Race 61 in 2013 and return invitations to perform Blank It Open Air Festival in 2011 and 2013. Along with the release of the album “RTH/TTL” two music video single’s filmed by London’s BopFlix and produced by Hoss Power will see the light of day. “From Up Here” and “Real Wild Child” both filmed in Dresden. The band sweats through a full set of original songs, with only a fine selection of covers to filter into their set lists. During his first 2930s concert Berlin’s legendary ex Mad Sin guitarist Tex Morten was quoted at saying “(this is) a cross between AC/DC and KISS… I love it” with their matching stage outfits and on stage rock n roll banter.

Members James-Lloyd Hodges (Farm Vegas), James Mason (The Mason Brothers), Adrian Olsen (Hypercolor), Alexandra Spalding (Lost in the Trees) and Tyler Williams (The Head and The Heart) explored ideas and sounds that resulted in their forthcoming debut album, Empty Light. Two years after Empty Light's release, Omega/Whatever finds them returning to their unofficial headquarters — Montrose Recording, a modern studio located on a historic Richmond plantation and operated by bandmate Adrian Olsen — and creating another self-produced album of rumbling rock, shot through with pop hooks, layers of percussion, and coed melodies from four different vocalists. It's a mix of old and new, much like the studio that birthed it.

Since the band’s inception in 2011, the trio comprised of Dave Dupuis, Swaan Miller and Jimmy Lucido, have been filling venues across the globe with energetic massive sound walls, captivating lights, and ethereal vocals. Released in 2013 the debut studio full-length “High in the Lasers” mixed by Dave Schiffman (Nine Inch Nails, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Mars Volta) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs) has landed the group as a featured new artist in Filter and Under the Radar magazine, and album on the month in ArtRocker Magazine UK. The release also saw them top many lists in 2013, including Diffuser.fm naming them: “One of 10 best Modern Shoegaze Bands” Nightmare Air’s Dupuis, a veteran of L.A. shoegazers Film School (Beggars Banquet Records), and Miller, whose stark 2006 acoustic album on Important Records melted hearts and faces everywhere, meticulously layer boy-girl harmonies, psych noise loops, fuzz-ripped bass, and glam soaked walls of guitars. In their combined years of touring, these road veterans have supported heavyweights from Smashing Pumpkins to The Jesus and Mary Chain to Swervedriver. Headlining clubs and playing festivals around the world throughout 2012 and 2013, Nightmare Air have shared stages with Sonic Youth legend Lee Ranaldo, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Wedding Present, The Duke Spirit, The Buzzcocks, Fishbone, Japanther, Ice Age, and The Cult at a SXSW showcase. The future is bright. (Taken from their official website)

Link | 2 | 2 | The New Sins | The New Sins | The New Sins | New n(y)o͞o/ not existing before; made, introduced, or discovered recently or now for the first time. Sin sin/ an immoral act considered to be a transgression against divine law. Their namesakes was derived from David Byrne’s book cataloguing 21st Century sin. Rather an apt naming for The New Sins, a band known for vulcanising their individual love of 80's pop with modern dance music production. Returning from a small creative Hiatus The New Sins pre-released ‘Lights Down’ in late 2014, a club-pop banger with a sunshine lilt. On the dance floor ‘Lights Down’ shines as an efficient battle weapon for any self-respecting DJ. But as a stand alone piece of music it stands as a good example of The New Sins MO, and the creative melange that makes their unique sound. Released on Defected record in 2015 with remixes from Waze and Odyssey and Hot-Shot New-Kid DJ S.K.T. the release has scored fans in Annie Mac, B-Traits, Pete Tong and Skream amongst many others. Previous releases from this band have been sparse, due to founding members Lou Hayter and Nick Phillips devoted and unquenchable hunger as music lovers and extensive work with other artists and producers. As the Guardian put it 'you can tell they know as much about Neu! as they do about Chic'. Former NME starlet Lou Hayter made a break-through as keyboardist for the Mercury-nominated band, New Young Pony Club. Since this introduction to the British Music scene Lou Hayter has been spending time as multi-talented model, musician and DJ extraordinaire. Last year saw the release of an album with JB Dunckel, one half of Air, and previous years have seen collaborations with Soulwax/2 Many DJ’s, brands Mulberry, Kiehls and British Institutes The BBC, Selfridges and The V&A - Yes we saved the best for last! On the other side of The New Sins duo we find Nick Phillips; an award winning film composer, music scientist, producer and 3D sound developer. As an artist Nick Phillips has released records as Boxsaga, enjoying critical support and becoming a minor underground pioneer of the key musical jump from Electro Punk to New Disco. Honing his craft Nick Phillips cut his teeth in the Science and Technology lab at Middlesex University creating sound and robotic installations. In The New Sins we find Phillips adapting this methodical yet experimental approach to synthesis to form the core of The New Sins unique production sound. Together The New Sins have released records ’It Doesn’t Work Like That’ and ‘Don’t Break My Heart’ for Tigersushi Records. Their latest release ‘Lights Down’ was pre-released to a rapturous reception from the underground club scene and media and will be release with remixes and version imminently. Please stay tuned.

Link | 0 | 4 | Nonnon | Nonnon | Nonnon | Dave Madden Dave Madden’s (aka dj webern, nonnon, Chomsky at the Bit, Wasabe P etc.) earliest memories have nothing to do with playing ball, or going to grandma’s, or riding a tricycle around Ogden: they involve pondering the oddity of the Magical Mystery Tour album art, playing a one-string guitar along with “Paint it Black” and trying to figure out what the hell some guy meant by “I am the Lizard King” Thank heavens for hippy moms! After spending his teenage years obsessed with Bauhaus and Depeche Mode, Dave attended university to study sound engineering/jazz guitar. He soon realized that being behind the console isn’t where he wanted to be so, on a whim, he switched to composition and started writing all the weird academic music that chases everyone out of Humanities 101 — focusing on computer assisted composition and, specifically, improvisation. He uses a laptop and electronics (such a cute term) to perform and DJ all over the world, from Montreal to Chico, California, in universities, museums and ghetto coffee shops, preferring the types of crowds who enjoy John Cage back to back with Massive Attack and his own realtime manipulation of both. Dave has worked for video game companies, film, television and all other manner of music-as-commodity companies. Now post-grad school, Dave spends his time still in front of a console, though listening to his own music, comprised of field recordings, found sounds and feedback, and reviewing music for www.squidsear.com

Link | 2 | 2 | Sutro | Sutro | Sutro | If the indietronic band SUTRO had one goal with the quartet’s new full-length album release (Title TBD), it was to up the energy level — from downtempo to, well, midtempo. But the band had far more than one goal. It wanted to up the game overall, with more fully realized songs, richer melodies and production, and a bolder sound. And with the assistance of producer Joe Chiccarelli, SUTRO has made good on its plans. Says Chiccarelli of the endeavor, “SUTRO may be the missing link in the EDM movement. They are the perfect balance of beats and atmospheric electronic elements and accessible pop song writing.” The album inhabits a sonic territory, a genre-inclusive zone, where everything from electronic, to indie, to pop can hang out on the same street corner and harmonize. The LP’s ten tracks are seductive throughout, often emotionally moving. And it's earwormily listenable, with tons of little grace noises that make you want to spin it again and again, to get at every bit of it: delicate glitch effects at the opening of “Heaven,” snatches of muted trumpet on “Surrender,” delicious synth work, and pneumatic percussion throughout. SUTRO’s music is determinedly from the near future. It's a willful indietronic hybrid — part live-band drive, part DJ sensibility — and the splendid tension of the music is listening to that hybrid, that graft, come to fruition. The new recordings add live drums to SUTRO’s sound and emphasize richer-than-ever songwriting, yet technology remains at the core of what SUTRO does. You can hear the digital sheen in all the songs — think Metric or Phantogram — with the deep, rhythmic pulse in the programming of lead singer TYLER STONE and the studio- as-instrument work of keyboardist JESSE GAY. KEENAN WAYNE's complex, melodic bass lines do more than just hold down the roots, while Guitarist PATRICK HINDS’ textural elements can often seem more like a synthe- sizer. “This LP solidifies the SUTRO sound,” says Keenan. “There are songs that have been gestating for awhile, balanced with others that still have that new-car smell, but for the first time, there is a thread of cohesion, with no filler.” Says Tyler, “Joe challenged us creatively and took us a little bit out of our comfort zone to help push the music over the top.” When SUTRO was just beginning to record, the group was deep into chillout, deep into downtempo, deep into the sounds that had come to rightly define San Francisco nightlife — “dance music’s mellower and more sophis- ticated cousin,” wrote Bill Picture in the San Francisco Chronicle. “Our intention has never been to make dance music,” says SUTRO’s Tyler, “but to fuse the elements of electronic music with a live aesthetic. Before SUTRO even managed to finish its debut EP, a track from it, "Temptress," landed on the San Francisco edition of the hallowed Destination Lounge series. It made perfect sense for SUTRO’s brand of loungey pop- tinged music to appear between house and of-the-moment electronica. The magazine XLR8R described SUTRO as “sexy, liquid, cinematic soul that just happens to have enormous commercial potential.” XLR8R was onto something: A SUTRO song would appear in the video game Tap Tap Revenge 3, and their music was licensed by Nokia, suiting the brand's composite image of global style and next-gen tech. SUTRO shared stages with the likes of Thievery Corporation and Brazilian Girls, and earned comparisons to trip-hop acts Portishead and Massive Attack. A move to Portland for Tyler and Patrick brought them into contact with Jesse, who says of his contribution to the band: “I set out to bring my analog synths/studio, keyboard playing, and production abilities in order to make a fuller sound.” Keenan keeps SUTRO rooted in San Francisco, where he lives, and the band uses jamLink to bridge the distance to Portland and rehearse in real time. With Tyler as the siren in the machine, SUTRO makes music for and about relationships in the age of rapidly iterating technology, technology that both brings us closer, allowing for constant contact and ambient awareness, and tests our relationships with countless new distractions. And for all its emotionally dark underpinnings, the LP manages to stake out its own patch of sunlight. Part of that sunniness is the resilience of Tyler’s vocals — that as bad as things might get, there is always a new day, a new romance, a new song. Interviewed & Writen By Marc Weidenbaum
