Link | 1 | 1 | Thee Commons | Thee Commons | Los Angeles | Thee Commons | Since banding together in 2012, psychedelic cumbia-punk quartet Thee Commons have made waves in and around their hometown of East LA. Featuring los hermanos Pacheco and one of several lively session bassists and recently added saxophonist, these romp ‘n’ rollers have managed not only to marry two unlikely genres -- world’s apart -- in perfect pastiche harmony but also are planning to spread this East L.A. sound all throughout the USA this summer. Altogether, Thee Commons have played well over a hundred shows, gaining in the process hundreds more in fans -- those eager for something new to call their own. They have performed at several of Southern California’s prestigious venues, including The Echoplex of Echo Park, The Teragram Ballroom – both of which they’ve headlined -- The Regent Theatre of Downtown Los Angeles, and the Observatory of Santa Ana; have been hosted for a residency by pocho wine bar Eastside Luv of Boyle Heights -- which consisted of a weekly burlesque-dancer-entangled-affair dubbed the “Cumbia Psicodelica Cabaret”; and have opened up for such acts as Chicano Batman, Bomba Estereo, Bombino and even unofficially -- by way of an impromptu guerilla-style street show -- for The Pixies. Discographically, Thee Commons’ “DIT” (do it together) hard work ethic has yielded them a debut 7-inch vinyl EP paradoxically titled Sunburn at Midnight -- self-released spring 2013 -- and a fragmented compilation entitled Rock is Dead: Long Live Paper and Scissors, which is to say an 8-volume limited edition EP series, the volumes of which they released successively throughout 2014 -- and which have since sold out. (Fun fact: the first volume cover was illustrated by drummer René Pacheco, and the remaining seven were designed by frontman David Pacheco.) As of 2015, however, Rock is Dead is available, via their bandcamp, as a full-feature 20-song CD, as a specialty, limited edition cassette originally released by the independent O.C. label Burger Records, and as a limited edition 10-inch -- 10-song -- vinyl. Apart from these endeavors, they have also created musical scores to two film productions, one to underground 1920’s silent film _ and the other to a children’s animated video book entitled Forest Friends, a Producciones con Sal collaborative effort which can be found on YouTube. Looking forward, 2016 has seen a second run of their 10-inch vinyl -- released by Burger -- a new 7-inch vinyl that includes their refreshing cover of Los Saico’s “Demolicion,” as well as a new full-length album "Loteria Tribal" --released by Burger as well-- featuring a repertoire of songs that further bridge the gap between a Latino and non-Latino demographic. Needless to say, the future looks auspicious for these young and determined “chunsters” who doggedly strive to take their music throughout the U.S.A. this summer and perfect their hypnotic yet invigorating act -- which includes an intertextual take on Nirvana's “Love Buzz” and a grungy cover of Selena’s “Baila Esta Cumbia”-- and disseminate the perfect pastiche that is psychedelic cumbia punk. -Martin Cossio

Link | 1 | 1 | Funebre Inferi | Funebre Inferi | Greece | Funebre Inferi | Funebre Inferi in Latin means funeral hell. Band's thematology influenced by death worship, occultism(necromancy) and old horror movies(especially about "holy inquisition" and witch hunting). The founder and the only member of the band got the idea to create the band in prison(prison transfers) as the police had arrested him as they found on him a knife and at his home a human skull stolen by the local cemetary painted in black color, satanic symbols at his room(posters with 666, pentagrams and other symbols made by him), Black Metal/Death Metal music and occult books. The prosecutor sent him at Dahou of Penteli(a sanatorium on mount of Penteli) where he spend 6 mounths of his life among children and teens who suffered from softer to heavy mental problems. Best things he did there was listening to black metal music, talking with the blonde nurse-rock listener and a good female friend- and having endless walks, alone, in the woods and caves(full of bats) of mount Penteli. After 6 mouth the psychiatrists who examined him found that he never suffered from any mental disease and thus the beast was free again. This happened during 1992, when the case of the Satanists of Palini had see the light of media. The leader of the band since 2000 is no longer a satanist, darkist, occultist and black metal listener and musician but a healthy paganist.

Influenced by the 80’s and 90’s darkwave/shoe gaze bands but also by the new synth pop and minimal electronic music scene, Diverting duo’s music is often described as introspective, otherworldly, hypnotic and evocative. After two full length albums and one Ep Diverting duo are now ready to release their third album “Desire” on Etch Wear (Norway) and Deambula Records (Italy). “Desire” will be out October 27th 2015. Sara is also collaborating with the Luxembourg based artist Sun Glitters. She took part in his album "Scattered into light" adding her voice to several tracks. |

Link | 1 | 1 | eEsa | eEsa | London | eEsa | Isa Khan Having had a release on one of the most iconic record labels around, as well as having written music for one of the world’s leading orchestras, Isa Khan (eEsa) is making a name for himself in the unusual mix of both the dance and classical music worlds. Early Life and Classical Career: eEsa began playing the violin aged 2½, followed by the piano and composition at 5. Aged 8, he was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Purcell School of Music; England’s oldest specialist music school. From there, he went on to study composition under a scholarship at the world renowned Royal College of Music, London, where he graduated with a 1st class BMus (Hons) degree. During his teens, eEsa frequently performed solo violin concerts around the UK, as well as with orchestras, touring Europe. As a composer, his innovative contemporary classical works have been performed by, amongst others, the revered London Philharmonic Orchestra, at some of the finest concert venues in England including the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall. ‘Isa Khan delivered soundscapes of glissandi and whispers... with structure and purpose’ - The Times (UK). Producer Career: It was during this time that eEsa’s interest in jazz, latin and dance music grew. After hearing Rasmus Faber’s “Ever After”, the first time he had heard music which combined all three genres, he felt inspired to begin writing and producing his own house music. Fast forward a number of years to 2012, and it was Rasmus Faber himself who launched eEsa's career as a producer, releasing "The Way" on his label, Farplane Records. The Way quickly received support from renowned DJ's across the globe including Grant Nelson, Richard Earnshaw, Hardsoul, Andy Ward and Groove Junkies to name just a few. It was later featured on Hed Kandi's Beach House 2012 compilation CD (#18 in the official UK Compilation Chart) Driven to make his own mark on house music, eEsa formed Quinto, a live house collective which features some of the most exciting musicians from the UK jazz scene, all of whom are creating a buzz in their own right. This unique sound is an ever growing part of eEsa's productions too, most recently on his remix of the classic Farplane track Nightlife by Feet, released on Rasmus Faber's new label, RaFa Music.

A native of New York State, after the break up of ISA he began recording original material, releasing demos "Music for the Forgotten Ones" on DIY tape in 2001 and as "Astropod" electronica DIY CD in 2002 both re-mastered and released for a limited time on the bands bandcamp page. Venture Lift's debut LP-CD entitled “Futuretoreal" (2007) and the follow-up "Tower of Spacious Karma" (2011) were released on the Detroit space rock label Mind Expansion Records run by Randall Nieman of the group Fuxa. Link | 1 | 1 | Tormentium | Tormentium | Eugene | Black Metal | Tormentium | Tormentium was conjured in the autumn of 2004 amongst the rainy woods of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. It was conceived by axemen Wes Beanblossom and Ray Eversole, vocalist Sky Skizz, drummer Jesse Levine, and bassist John Arbogast, with the intent of expressing their darkest vision to a reality. Covering a wide range of emotions and subject matter, the band has written of unknown horrors, prideful impiety, and story-like tales of destruction. As a metal band tapping into a plethora of inspirations, the band has always broke the bonds of expectations to cultivate a creative sound that is melodically grandiose, eerily haunting, and violently brutal. Tormentium sparingly released a few hand-made demos during the years of bloodying stages, sharing performances with a variety of influential bands such as Horna, Impaled, Phobia, Inquisition, Noctuary, Rotten Sound, and High On Fire. However, the band has been known for its undying support of the Pacific Northwest’s underground metal scene, which is where the band’s core fanbase grew. For 6 years, the band went on to write enough material for a few albums, yet most of the songs were never released, and left to live on in the hearts of the local diehard fans. In the summer of 2010, guitarist Ray Eversole left the band to pursue his career as a professional tattoo artist. With Wes taking over as the main songwriter and sole guitarist, the now four-piece increased focus on this music’s dark narrative, feeling there were more stories to tell. In 2011, the band produced two releases. A split with longtime allies INFERNUS (Portland, OR) included the last material written as 5 piece with Ray Eversole, which was a pro-printed CD with a lush 6-fold booklet, limited to 500 copies on Dark Forest Productions. The EP “Cursed Beyond Flesh” saw the first new material as a 4 piece band, pro-printed on CD and self released to 100 copies. “Cursed Beyond Flesh” focused its high energy to share insight to the blessings of damnation, destruction, and things that lurk beyond the dark. In 2012, the band released a split with local brothers CULT OF UNHOLY SHADOWS entitled “O Lorde In Thee I Trust”, the title a mockery of Christian martyrdom. This effort was self released on CD to a small 100 copies, in collectable DIY-style glory. The year beyond apocalypse, 2013, finds Tormentium writing new material for a full length album, slated to record next year. Some of the tracks include Black Womb, Melody Vitriol, and Fallen (In Defiance) which can be previewed on the DIY-style DVD entitled “Ceremony Of Necromancy”, released in late 2012. This will be Tormentium’s most creative and undaunted release to date. The future has never looked as bloody… Members of Tormentium have also played in Soul Scythe, Ara, Cult Of Unholy Shadows, and Effigy in the Mausoleum. |

They released two EPs: 1998′s “This Year’s Eclipse” and 2000′s “Conjure Itch”, both of which contain different line-ups and have notably different sounds in instrumentation. All incarnations of this project featured Sonny Kay, who was the main mover and shaker of Gold Standard Labs (GSL), a label that captured the zeitgeist of the post-hardcore scene of the late nineties and early naughties.

Link | 1 | 1 | Them Are Us Too | Them Are Us Too | San Francisco | Them Are Us Too | Them Are Us Too is the project of Kennedy and Cash hailing from Santa Cruz, CA. The project originally started with Kennedy making music from a very early age creating a style of "lo-fi noisy bedroom pop", as she states it. This evolved over the years as she set out on her own, even playing a few shows by herself in a sort of "one man band" fashion, sometimes playing guitars and keys at the same time. Cash entered the scene in 2013 some time after seeing one of Kennedy's solo performances when they met through mutual acquaintances at her birthday party. Through various drunken circumstances, she ended up as part of the band at a live show the next day and at that point the duo was formed. They have gained a cult following within independent music circles as a young, new take on the revered "4AD sound" of dreamy goth-pop anthems. With a nod to 80’s shoegaze sensibilities, Them Are Us Too creates songs about tragedy and loves-lost that draws devoted listeners to their nostalgic and innocent sound. Kennedy Ashlyn Wenning's vocals have been repeatedly compared to Kate Bush, Harriet Wheeler, and Elizabeth Fraser, with a pitch-perfect octave range carrying songs gracefully between optimistic joy down to undisturbed melancholia - all within one moment of verse. Guitarist Cash Askew paints a layered and complex backdrop using signature reverberation and washes of stringed ambient tones, akin to Robin Guthrie, Ronny Moorings and Kevin Shields.

In the movie, the two brothers (Thor and Odin) are die-hard fans of a fictional heavy metal band, Ludor from Canada. Very little info is ever given about the band in the movie but at some point's Thor and Odin's mother can be heard saying that Ludor "almost had a hit" in 1984. In real life, Mats Levén teamed up with Jimmy Lagnefors to write and record the songs attributed to Ludor and played throughout the movie. Ultimately, partially due to the popularity of the movie at the Swedish box office, "Ludor" ended up recording a full-length album, released in 2013. |

Link | 1 | 1 | Ralf Wehowsky | Ralf Wehowsky | Germany | Ralf Wehowsky | Ralf Wehowsky is one in a growing group of non-academic sound artists whose work is abstract, but very focused on the possibilities of sound and very rewarding over repeated listenings and different works. Although he started his musical career in the post-industrial scene, his musical output in the '90s resists categorization as well as casual listening. His sonic interests are wide, but it is perhaps his pursuit of the transformation of simple materials that distinguishes him from his colleagues. On one of his albums, When Freezing Air Stings Like Ice, a common set of parameters is the foundation for all seven pieces, but the parameters that create the pitch curve for one track create the volume curve for another, and so forth. Thus, a common foundation becomes the generative force for a vastly different collection of pieces. His album Tulpas took the concept of transformation even further by inviting several other sound artists to participate in the process, creating a reflection and commentary on his own work unparalleled in contemporary music. Wehowsky was born in 1959 in Mainz, Germany. In the '70s, his musical interests ranged from hard rock (the Stooges, Black Sabbath) to prog rock (Henry Cow, Faust), and free jazz (Ornette Coleman, Peter Brötzmann) to new music (Stockhausen, Pierre Henry). He became disillusioned with rock because it stopped being challenging and was too much entertainment, but shared a brief interest with punk because of its revolt against mainstream art. His earliest recorded work was with the post-industrial group Permutative Distortion (later called P.D. and finally recording as P16.D4), and in 1981, Wehowsky and his colleagues formed the collective Selektion, whose members worked in both acoustic and optical arenas. The culmination of P16.D4's recording career was a double LP, entitled Nichts Niemand Nirgends Nie!, released in 1986. This album already shows Wehowsky's interest in repeated transformations of a given set of material. It included two studio sides (one by P16.D4 and the other by many of the same musicians in a different project, S.B.O.T.H.I.), a side of live presentation of the same material, and a final side of specific transformations of the previous three sides. Although this album has not been specifically reissued, it has been used as source material for two CDs in the '90s, and has even been used on a collaborative CD released in 1999. In 1992, Wehowsky released his first solo album under the name RLW. Most of his output in the '90s was collaborative, but he did release four additional solos (see discography below). His work in the '90s culminated in a five-CD set, Tulpas, where he invited several leading sound artists from all over the world to participate in a transformative process that took two years to complete. The participants themselves chose how to proceed, whether to use a structural approach or an emotive affect, or simply to do a remix. He sometimes transformed the pieces even after delivery in order to create a more perfect whole. Far more than a simple remix project, Tulpas is a model of collaborative transformation as well as a complex overarching vision. Short discographic essay Ralf Wehowsky has released the solo works Acht (1992), the manifesto of his electronic and computer music, 14 (1992), that collects unreleased material of the last decade, Revu et Corrige` (Trente Oiseaux, 1995), When Freezing Air Stings Like Ice I Shall Breathe Again (Streamline, 1995), and the mini-album Nameless Victims (Metamkine, 1996). They explore the technique of having musicians exchange sound material and re-composing it. By pushing the concept to the extreme, the monumental Tulpas (Selektion, 1997) is virtually an essay on his work compiled by other musicians. Pullover (Table of the Elements, 1998), which uses voice as its source material, L'Oeil Retourne/Vier Vorspiele (Selektion, 1998), with Walter Marchetti, Yang-Tul (Anomalous, 1999), with Andrew Chalk, Cases (Selektion, 2001), with Kevin Drumm, simply refined the technique taking advantage of computers.

Link | 1 | 1 | The Silence Set | The Silence Set | The Silence Set | Some collaborations start out with a fully formed idea of what the end result will be like. And the creative process thus becomes something of a straight line, a mapped out road towards a clearly visible and tangible goal. The Silence Set didn’t begin like that at all, in fact quite the opposite. It began in total freedom, a tabula rasa in the truest sense. It began in a mutual respect and from an idea of working together without limitations or boundaries in regards of genres or previous musical output. The Silence Set consists of Gothenburg based musicians and composers Dag Rosenqvist and Johan G Winther. The former perhaps best known as the now defunct Jasper TX, the latter for his work in angular math rock outfit Scraps Of Tape and from his previous solo effort as Tsukimono. Over the course of about three years, the sounds of acoustic guitar, pump organ, piano, banjo and voice where caught on tape, rearranged, processed and coupled with other sounds and recordings, only to then be left waiting for months on end. And all the while life changed, relationships ended, new life began and older lives ended. More sounds where recorded, arranged and left to wait. Eventually tracks started to emerge, tracks with lyrics and titles and some sort of structure, something resembling actual songs. People were invited into the process and slowly an album began to take shape. Kristofer Ström joined in to perform trumpet on one track. Heather Woods Broderick played flute, wrote lyrics and sang beautifully on the longest track on the album, where also Nils Frahm contributed with both his mixing skills as well as with synthesizer. Eventually an album was done, only to then, naturally, be left waiting for months on end. And life changed even more.

Born : December 02, 1926 in New York City, New York Died : June 24, 2002 in Shelton, Connecticut. Joe worked with Tommy Dorsey, Marcia Hillman, Milt Hinton, "The Australian Jazz Quartet", Claude Thornhill. He was led his own group : "Four Jacks and a Jill". From the liner notes to "Joe Derise Sings" on Bethlehem Record BCP 1039: Joe was born in Ansonia, Conn., which he left for the U.S. Navy in 1943. He came to New York after the Navy and has been there ever since. Traditionally enough, his father wanted him to be a doctor, but Joe had other ideas and learned to play the guitar. Playing his guitar and singing, he got a week's engagement at a small downtown club by winning an amateur show soon after he came to town. The one week became 16 weeks, and it was there that Joe began his association with Davey Lambert and the Mellotones. He subsequently worked with Claude Thornhill, acting as arranger for the Snowflakes, road manager, singer and guitar player. He was next heard with his own group, Four Jacks and a Jill. Not satisfied merely to sing, play, arrange and manage, Joe has been busily writing original music. He has a suite and a piano sonata "home in the drawer," and says if he had to pick his favorite musical activity, it would be writing. Joe's favorite piece of music is Beethoven's Eroica, and he enjoys Hindemith and Debussy. He thinks Frank is the best popular singer around.

Link | 1 | 1 | The Image of a Group | The Image of a Group | United Kingdom | Image Of A Group | The Image Of A Group was to be the artist name for a 1998 album, "Balance - Music For The Eye" by Lol Creme, Anne Dudley, Trevor Horn and Paul Morley, to be released by [l=ZTT]. Just as the masters were completed, an agreement was reached on use of the [a=The Art Of Noise] name (jointly owned by Dudley and former AoN member JJ Jeczalik). As the name was available for the foursome to use, the "Balance" tapes were whisked straight back and Horn set about rethinking the entire project with more of an Art of Noise feel. These reworked recordings eventually evolved into the 1999 album by [m4065]. Morley later recycled the name for use by a project of his on the [l=ServiceAV] label.
