Report created based on data in MusicBrainz as of 16/12/2025
Found 617983 artists, we show 1000 artists per page.
The report is not continually updated so may not reflect the current data within MusicBrainz and or Discogs databases.
These are Discogs artists not currently linked to a MusicBrainz artist, and we have been unable to find a potential link for either.
Many of these artists probably are in MusicBrainz in some form but they are not currently linked, the list is ordered so that Discogs artists with the most number of single artists releases are listed first on the basis that these artists would be of more interest.
Some problems will just be due to deficiencies in the Discogs to Musicbrainz artist matching algorithm employed by Albunack.
There are also timing issues as this report is not updated immediately so will not reflect recent modifications and additions to MusicBrainz and Discogs.
One issue in Discogs is they handle artist credits differently so a Discogs name consisting of multiple people is probably represented on MusicBrainz as two individuals, but we try to filter these out of this report
We have also omitted artists that are not unique in both MusicBrainz and Discogs because these artists are probably not missing just more difficult to match up.
Another issue is that some Discogs artists have multiple ids with one id just redirecting to the other, this is the case with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, do we add both links to MusicBrainz ?
Limited report to artists with at least two single artist releases for now.

| Search | Add | 15 | Derek Lyn Plastic | Derek Lyn Duncan | DEREK LYN PLASTIC conjures up post-apocalyptic images of neon-lit back alleys and light-saber switchblades, with it's hopeless bad-boy romanticism vibe set to twitching keys and guitar fuzz. The sound is catchy enough to be placed alongside any of today's most notable punk-pop.Casual fans of this genre might just find a new favorite mad scientist in DEREK LYN PLASTIC. (MAXIMUM ROCK N' ROLL) .... I do believe it's more of a spontaneous generation than an empty trend--new wave smacked on the jagged boulders of garage rock, exploding in a bounty of once-buried treasure.Science experiments gone wrong, psychosis being wrestled with, and dirty electronics used as percussion instruments and then caressed back into a melody. The best of all,the songs are thickly spined and muscled into form by solid songwriting instead of mere shtick. In turn this reminds me of Gary Numan,Joy Division.Good stuff.(RAZORCAKE).... |

| Search | Add | 15 | E23 | Brian K. Comerford | Best-known for being co-founder of Colorado's longest-running electronic music radio program, Electronic Air on KGNU-FM [kgnu.org], E23 (Brian K. Comerford) has established a sonic-art track record for being a "music worker". His output, as both a DJ and producer, adheres to what he identifies as "illclectronic", often equally informed by electronic dance styles as well as esoteric sound sculptures. Where Electronic Air has largely been an outlet for more conventional electronic dance music and sub-genres, E23's solo and collaborative audio productions have historically tended toward syncopated glitches, droning ambience and art house sound installations. His interest in electronic music began at an early age (the 1976 release of "Sequencer" by Synergy was highly influential, as was the 1968 recording of "Switched-On Bach" by Walter Carlos), and he procured his first synthesizer and electronic drum kit in 1983, coinciding with the standardization of MIDI technology. Beginning original electronic music compositions at the age of 12, he has continued to cultivate sounds primarily in the experimental and underground fringes of electronic music ever since. Citing Throbbing Gristle, Coil, and Psychic TV as major influences, his original works tend to veer between noise, atmospheric, and beat-infused, utilizing numerous samples. He was also a producer in the first wave of Internet Radio. Having co-founded RadioValve.com in the mid-1990s, E23 helped spread the evolution of electronic music and rave culture both on the Web and FM airwaves. He began DJing "Metamorphosis Radio" in 1989 on WPSA-FM at Paul Smith's College, New York, and continued FM broadcast in Texas during 1991-1993 where he also emerged as a club and rave DJ. Relocating to Colorado in 1993 while continuing that work, E23 also began producing a variety of radio programs at KGNU-FM the following year, as well as teaming with Pirate Sound System. The majority of that crew eventuated into the core production team that co-founded KGNU's Electronic Air in 1995, where E23 remained the sole original founding member for over two and a half decades. He additionally co-produces the leadership and technology podcast, >Lead.exe_, and periodically live streams on Twitch. E23 has performed across the state, the nation, and internationally as both a DJ and live producer. He archives many of his mixes on Mixcloud, and selected original tracks on Soundcloud and YouTube. He typically records under his E23 moniker, reserving an alias, Scat, for Hardcore Techno and Dark Ambient productions. Both individually and with long-time collaborator devslashnull, he has produced several collaborative works with lyricist/poet Chris Mosdell (YMO, among many others). He is a member of the "folktop" outfit, OVNI. |

Part self-help for the helpless, part narcissistic sermons in “self-betterment”. This is a reflection of a poisoned sick society, and the music for its funeral. Crippling Self Doubt’s “The End Of My Rope” and “Beyond The End Of My Rope” is Scott Dryman’s expressive, personal journey through failed relationships, self-loathing, and his never ending failure, train wreck of a life. During the creation of both of these bodies of work, Scott suffered daily with feelings of rejection, personal loss, soul crushing depression, and felt inadequate in every way. Raw, honest, and emotionally draining the listener will be dragged to the bottom, and forced to see a reality few would be willing accept. After this….you can never go back. You will not be the person you were before. You will see…Crippling Self Doubt is inside of you…and it is inside of me…. |

Trompa ("french horn" in Brazilian Portuguese) is a Brazilian instrumental free-improvisational punk band that plays a particular kind of emotional, mathy, post-hardcore. Although it has never been officially revealed (its members always refer to themselves in the plural, as "french horn players") it is known that its core members are guitar player [a4183667], drummer [a8219531] and bass player [a9550747], with a rotating cast of other collaborators, most frequently drummer [a4273234], but also drummer and trumpet player [a7959347], bass player [a4273235] and bass player [a6833730]. They are known for their radical left-wing politics [the last song on their release [r19230439] (which have song titles that refer to bank bombings and robberies) is called "A Humanidade Não Será Feliz Enquanto O Último Capitalista Não For Enforcado Nas Tripas Do Último Burocrata" which stands for "Humanity Won't Be Happy Until The Last Capitalist Is Hanged In The Guts Of The Last Bureaucrat" in english, they frequently played in squats, occupations, in events raising funds for radical left-wing causes, they're record "[r23610104]" was recorded live in an occupied school during the biggest educational strike in Brazil's history, and, overall, they have always considered themselves a punk band more than anything]; for their complete autonomy in the production of their output (which always had the phrase "pelo fim da terceirização de nós mesmos" – which stands for "for the end of the outsourcing of ourselves" in english – after the credits for each album); and also for the poetic texts for the promotion of shows and album liner notes as well as the literary and revolutionary references in they're song titles. To date, Trompa has 14 releases, all of them improvised and recorded live. Before turning into a free-improvisational band, as a quartet (guitar player [a4183667], drummer [a8219531], bass player [a9550747], joined by guitar player and clarinetist Gustavo Herscovitz from [a6142674]) they recorded a demo with three composed songs that never got to be finished or released. | |

| Search | Add | 15 | The Nied's Hotel Band | The Nied’s Hotel Band is a powerhouse recording and performing rock-n-roll band from Pittsburgh, PA. NHB delivers the hardworking, blue collar, muscle that has made Pittsburgh a legendary rock-n-roll city. The band includes some of the best-known and respected players in the region, including singer John Vento (who is, perhaps, the hardest-working front man around), guitarists Tim Hadley and Jim McCullough, plus keyboardist Fred Delu and sax man Ed Jonnet, who last joined forces in the 70’s as members of Pittsburgh’s most beloved rock/soul band – The Rhythm Kings. Newest members Frank DeCarolis (bass) and Bob Fetherlin (drums) complete a stellar Lineup. The band had its origins in 2003 when singer John Vento began a studio recording project that he titled “Nied’s Hotel” as a tribute to Jim Nied, proprietor of the landmark Pittsburgh tavern of the same name, which also was the source of inspiration for many of the songs. Vento, along with noted musician/producer Buddy Hall, began the process of bringing these new songs to life, coaxing amazing performances from an all-star roster of Pittsburgh musicians – Reb Beach, Kenny Blake, Pete Hewlett, B.E. Taylor, Norman Nardini, Tom Bellin, Joe Munroe, Scott Anderson and Jim Britton. But no one had more impact than John’s primary session drummer, Ron Beitle. As the original drummer for Wild Cherry (“Play That Funky Music”), Ron brought his considerable drumming talents and gold record experience to the “Nied’s Hotel” project, released on CD in 2004.The next release, 2007′s “The Way That You Roll,” was again recorded with session players, but Vento, along with drummer Beitle, decided it was time to start performing this material at live shows. The new release was credited to “John Vento and The Nied’s Hotel Band,” but the live band line-up changed frequently while John and Ron searched for the right chemistry between players. Along the way, some fine musicians became NHB alums, but none more important than singer/songwriter/guitarist Stephen Christopher, who left his mark by penning the songs “600 Under” and “Need A Lover,” which are still mainstays of the NHB live show. Then, in early 2009, Beitle recruited his life-long friend, Russ Oblinger (bass) to join the band. Russ had just returned to Pittsburgh after a long and successful career as one of Detroit’s best session players. With these two guys in place, NHB now had a tight and accomplished rhythm section. The band began to fine-tune their sound and develop more original material. Within a year or so, Tim Hadley, Fred Delu, Ed Jonnet, and Jim McCullough had all joined the band. With a consistent lineup and a killer new sound, the band went to work writing and arranging new original songs and creating a live show that reflected the band’s powerful personality. By May of 2011, NHB was ready to make a real rock-n-roll album. No more session players, just a well-rehearsed band entering the studio to play and record as one. Basic tracks were recorded live at Vento’s Corbriwood Studios in West Deer, PA, followed by post-production and mixing at Buddy Hall’s Beacon Hill Studio. The results were released in 2012 as an EP called “Side One”. Although pleased with the results, the band, having grown leaps and bounds as a performing, arranging and writing unit since their inception, wanted to try something a little different. The band enlisted Klint Macro, who had just moved back to the area after a successful career in the Los Angeles studio scene, to be their new engineer/producer. The band recorded all of their new material at Klint’s Cobblesound Recording Co., as well as re-arranging and re-mixing the “Side One” material. The finished full-length CD, “One Night Stand”, was released in July of 2014. Unfortunately, upon its completion, drummer Ron Beitle and bassist Russ Oblinger decided to leave the band for personal reasons, with Bob Fetherlin and Frank DeCarolis, both accomplished players in their own right, stepping in to fill the void. Like any great rock-n-roll band, NHB prides itself on delivering high-energy, entertaining, live shows. The band has made a major investment in its live production sound and lights, and is blessed to have one of the finest and most professional crews around. | |

| Search | Add | 15 | Thor Raymond | Thor Raymond Zetterstrøm | Thor Raymond Zetterstrøm, born in Stavanger 1919, died in 1982. Used the artist Thor Raymond. Norway's first cowboy singer, fully completed in 1952, had its greatest commercial success with the song "A letter with three loving words" along with Åse Wentzel; The song sold in 67,000 copies. A tendonitis in the left arm of the early 1960s put an end to the career. Thor Raymond went before the Second World War in the photo arch of the uncle who had a photo shop in Kongsgata in Stavanger. As a musician, Thor Raymond was autodidact (self-taught). He even comforted himself by singing simple shows with simple melodies. Thor Raymond started his musical runway as soloist and dance musician along with comrade Rasmus Dahl. He was also guest artist of the reviews that the two cousins Gilbert and Odd Kjell Helgeland set up in Haugesund, in 1947 and 1948. Thor Raymond's real breakthrough came in 1952. He dressed as a cowboy and launched his own songs "A Cheerful Cowboy Song" and "Yippi Ai". In a short period of time, 10,000 plates were sold. Then the songs came on track: "Old Black", "Buldrende Buffalo", "Banjo Bill from Arizona", "Cowboydansen," The lonely cowboy "," Cowboy farewell "and" Red River Valley ". In 1954 he heard the song "Vaya Con Dios" when he listened to Hit Parade on the AFN American Forces Network. Thor wrote Norwegian text and went to studio in Oslo together with Åse Wentzel. The Stavanger artist became Norway's most sought-after gramophone butterfly in a short period of time, and "Vaya Con Dios" is still such a tremendous melody, over fifty years later. The song was the start of a successful collaboration for the duo. In 1955, "A letter with three loving words" came, as with its 67,000 copies sold, became Thor Raymond's biggest commercial success. The melody was followed by several plots of land: "Today I've burned my love letters," "A little apartment", "In a small cafe", "My secret honeymoon," "I love your smile", "Loving, loving thoughts" "Midnight roll", "It's going to be very little" and "Send a greeting home". Several of the melodies were a permanent guest in the NRK Wish Concert for years. At this time Raymond and Wentzel competed with other famous artists such as Alf Prøysen, Kurt Foss and Reidar Bøe, The Monn Keys, Sisters Bjørklund and Jens Book-Jenssen. The 1950s was Thor Raymond's great decade as a record artist, but in the early 1960s his career ended when he received a tendonitis in the left arm. He then took up the thread as a photo consultant and traveled around the country to advise people on restoration and coloring of old photographs. During this time he lived in Oslo, and later moved to a small farm on Toten. After 15 years at Toten, he moved to Jelsa in Ryfylke where his son lived with family. Later he settled down on Sola and Klepp. In 1970 he participated in a radio show in Atlantic Hall, "Back to the 50's". With "Old Black" he finished the artist career with the last big stage show, with the same old voice, and the same simple guitar chords. |

| Search | Add | 15 | Vincenzo Ingraldo | Vincenzo Ingraldo | The multifaceted Italian musician Vena (born Vincenzo Ingraldo), founding member of [A=God In Panic], showcases his creativity through a refined style. Distinctive features of his early work include the transparency and roundness of sounds, which blend kaleidoscopic experiences of inner restlessness that sometimes evoke deviant and hallucinatory “creatures.” In the early 1990s, he played as a guitarist in several local bands, performing at sicilian rock music contests and competitions and self-producing remarkable musical works. Mainly influenced by David Bowie, Nick Drake, and Jeff Buckley, as well as by Joy Division and Bauhaus, and later by apocalyptic folk artists such as Current 93, Sol Invictus, and Death in June, he passionately dedicated himself to artistic production and songwriting, cultivating a unique style. Over time, increasingly refined productions emerged in his early post-rock projects Gula Mons (2007) and Der Fluß (2009). These reached a higher level of expression and maturity in his most recent experimental project, [A=God In Panic], founded in 2010. |

| Search | Add | 15 | Pierfrancesco Grossi | Pierfrancesco Grossi is an Italian DJ Producer born on June 10, 1989. He is eldest son of the Italian DJ Mr. Robert, he grew up frequenting many clubs, watching his father put the disks on the console. He immediately became passionate about disco music and independently learned to mix at home using with a pair of Technics 1210 MK2 and his father’s numerous vinyl records, with the intention of creating a personal mixing technique and without too many influences. At the age of 12 he puts records for the first time in front of an audience: it was the end of year party of the middle school he attended. From there, he begins a long journey as a DJ alongside his father in the family club. A few years later he approached music production and, with the help of his father, he designs a small home studio where he starts studying sound, experimenting with synths up to the production of some dance remixes, however never released. In 2009 he came into contact with Paolo Aliberti, who managed Supersonik Records, the label with which he released his rst single entitled Cricket Night, followed by other musical projects. Between 2012 and 2018 he mainly devoted himself to DJing, putting records on private parties but also in various places in Rome and its province. In 2019 he founded his own label, Technopathy, but in parallel he decided to send demos around, getting in touch with numerous artists and record producers. In 2020 “Insomnia” comes out and thus becomes part of the Beenoise Records team. | |

It was in August of that year that she, along with her husband and 12 year old daughter, Beverly, moved to Grand Rapids from Canton, Ohio. Aunt Bertha’s prayer as she began her ministry at C.B.H. was the same then as it is today: "Dear Lord, I do not ask That Thou should'st give me some high work of Thine, Some noble calling or some wondrous task. Give me a little hand to hold in mine; Give me a little child to point the way Over the strange, sweet path that leads to Thee. Give me a little voice to teach to pray; Give me two shining eyes Thy face to see. The only crown I ask. dear Lord, to wear Is this; That I may. teach a little child. I do not ask that I may ever stand Among the wise. the worthy, or the great; I only ask that softly, hand in hand, A child and l may enter at the gate." |
| Search | Add | 15 | Simon Jargy | Simon Jargy (1919, Mardin - 2001) was an oriental ethnomusicologist. In May 1950, at the occasion of the International Conference on Sacred Music held in Rome, he gave a conference on “Syrian Liturgical Music” whose text was published in a Pontifical journal. He started studies at the Jerusalem Benedictine Institute and resumed them at the Syriac-Catholic seminary of Charfet (Lebanon). Enrolled at the Catholic University of Paris, he defended a thesis on Syrian Monarchism from the origins to the Arab conquest at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in 1951. Redirecting his research towards studying sung popular poetry, he undertook for the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique/National Centre for Scientific Research) in 1954-55 then in 1958, a number of collecting missions in Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq. Which led him to writing an article in the Orient magazine (1958) and a book “La poésie populaire traditionnelle chantée au Proche-Orient arabe” (Sung Traditional Popular Poetry in the Arab Near-East) (Mouton, 1970) demonstrating his full mastery of the local dialects through his translation of the vernacular texts. But the “Musique libanaise” (Lebanese Music) and “Musique syrienne” (Syrian Music) entries he wrote for the “Encyclopédie de la musique” (Encyclopaedia of Music) (Fasquelle, 1958), limited to the examination of his speciality subject area, i.e. oriental Christianism, are simplistic texts in many respects. In 1964, he was appointed Professor of Islamology and Arab Studies at the university of Geneva. He organized in this city in 1970 the first European concert of future lute star Iraqi Mounir Bashir. The concert was recorded by Emi-Pathé, and Jargy wrote the accompanying text. Later in 1971, he wrote the presentation text of Mounir Bashir’s best recording edited by OCORA (Radio France). He also published the very successful “La musique arabe” (Arab Music) in the «Que sais-je?» series: 23 000 copies, added to an Arabic translation (Jounieh, Lebanon), a record for a work of this kind. Late in life, he redirected his focus towards the Arabian Peninsula that he visited on a regular basis. He published with Zakariyyā al–Ansārī the “Musical Anthology of the Arabian Peninsula” (4 CDs, Geneva, 1994) whose pieces were for the most part recorded by him. In parallel, he published with Hachette books of more general reach on the region: the first ones “Émirats arabes du Golfe” (Arab Emirates of the Gulf) (1976), Yémen (1978), and Koweit (1980) were co-written with Alain Saint Hilaire. His other writings include: Syrie (Syria) (Lausanne 1962), “Guerre et paix en Palestine” (War and Peace in Palestine) (Neuchâtel 1968), “Islam et chrétienté” (Islam and Christianity) (Genève et Paris 1981), that add nothing to his reputation. Out of his whole production, he mostly distinguished himself in ethnomusicology. | |

| Search | Add | 15 | The Smoky Mountain Travelers | The Smoky Mountain Travelers were a five-piece bluegrass band based in Gatlinburg, Tenn., where they played at the Riverside Motor Lodge from 1976 to 1998. Led by Jack Grooms (vocals and guitar, 1930–1998), the band released a number of studio and live albums. Longtime members included Fred McMahan (vocals and bass, 1933–2013), Carl Stump (vocals and mandolin, 1935–2021), and Randy Watson (banjo and guitar, b. 1963). Although the Smoky Mountain Travelers’ roots date back to 1948, the band’s discography can be traced back to 1971’s Blue Grass Grows in the Smokies, which featured the lineup of Grooms, McMahan, Stump, Bill Chambers (banjo, 1935–1990), and Coy Finger (fiddle, 1925–2012). In 1975, fiddler Byron Doss replaced Finger, and the quintet would go on to release Live On Stage in Gatlinburg the following year. In 1976, the four backing members split from Grooms and formed the New Bluegrass Season. Grooms reassembled the Smoky Mountain Travelers with Mynabelle Keller, banjo; Mike Grove, fiddle; Malcolm Link, bass; and Enos Johnson, mandolin. The group appeared on the album The New Bluegrass Sound before Barry McCarter and Tom Caldwell took the places of Keller and Johnson respectively. It was this reshuffled Smoky Mountain Travelers lineup that saw the band’s biggest album success. The group released Smoky Mountain Smoke, Travelin’ Home, and Dreaming of a Little Cabin over the next three years, from which fourteen tracks were culled for the compilation album The Best of the Smoky Mountain Travelers, the band’s bestseller. Link, a former radio jingles singer for the copywriters who opened Thunderhead Sound Studios in Knoxville (where the Travelers recorded in the late 1970s), supplied commanding lead vocals that gave the band a new sound on such tracks as “Foggy Mountain Top” and “Fox On The Run.” Lineup changes abounded over the next decade. Rob Curtis followed Link on bass. Caldwell, who had sung the title track on Dreaming of a Little Cabin, left in 1980 and Stump returned to play the mandolin. Watson replaced McCarter on the banjo beginning in 1982. When Grove left to perform in nearby Pigeon Forge, fiddling prodigy Dorothy Ferris joined the band out of high school. This lineup recorded a handful of albums in the early 1980s, including You Are My Sunshine, Vacation in the Smokies, and Smoky Mt. Memories. By the release of Live in ’85, McMahan had returned to the band following stints with the New Bluegrass Season and the Gatlinburg Grass. He reoccupied his position on bass and Curtis moved to mandolin. The group released the cassette album Wildwood Flower before Bill Lynch replaced Curtis on 1992’s Smoky Mountain Pickin’. Amanda Mathis would join Jimmy Sims for twin fiddle work on a later Smoky Mountain Travelers cassette. The band’s last five-piece lineup included Grooms, McMahan, Watson, Earl Ownby on mandolin, and Sims and a returning Grove sharing fiddling duties. Pictured L–R: Randy Watson, Dorothy Ferris, Carl Stump, Jack Grooms, Rob Curtis. | |

| Search | Add | 15 | Bartosz Lasecki | Bartosz Lasecki | Bartosz Lasecki is a Polish-American composer and producer based in New York, renowned for blending the depth of classical traditions with modern electronics and intimate human performances. A classically trained guitarist, he honed his craft under Tali Roth at the Juilliard School and later refined his compositional voice with David Tcimpidis and David T. Little at Mannes The New School for Music. Guided early on by media composer, producer, and pianist Gordon Minette, Bartosz gained invaluable experience in studio workflows and composing for film and television. In 2024, he scored the film Americano, directed by Deny Gallagher, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). At the heart of his creative process is All About That Studio, his personal workspace in New York, where Bartosz experiments with modular synthesis, vintage analog equipment, and innovative recording techniques. By combining timeless instrumentation with forward-thinking production and sound design, he crafts immersive soundscapes that bridge classical concert halls and modern production studios. Over the years, he has collaborated with artists from Poland, South Korea, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Blending classical traditions with modern electronics and intimate human performances, Bartosz’s sonic world reflects a broad palette of influences—Béla Bartók, Krzysztof Penderecki, Hans Zimmer, Nils Frahm, Ólafur Arnalds, Jon Hopkins, and Radiohead, weaving together an intimate yet expansive musical terrain that pushes the boundaries of contemporary composition. Currently, Bartosz is preparing for the release of his debut album, <an>android/among.the<clouds>, scheduled for 2025. The album narrates the evolving story of “an android”, revealing the intricate interplay between humanity and technology with each composition. By bridging alternative, electronic, ambient, and orchestral textures, Bartosz sparks reflection on what it truly means to be human in an increasingly connected world. |

| Search | Add | 15 | Robert Gayler | Robert Augustus Gayler | Robert Gayler (6 May 1873, New York — 15 February 1954, Interlachen, Florida) was an American pianist, organist, celesta player, arranger, and music pedagogue. He worked at [l=Edison Records] between 1916 and 1937, supervising the New York Recording Studio team and appearing on numerous releases as an accompanist. In later years, Gayler taught at the Florida Southern College, serving as Professor of Organ and Dean of the School of Music. He was married to soprano singer Marie Fahnestock Stoddart (1878—1939). Gayler showcased a natural talent in early childhood; at fifteen, he already worked as an organist at one of the largest churches in Brooklyn. Robert studied piano with [a=Xaver Scharwenka] and Almon Kincaid Virgil (1842—1921), among others, and organ with Robert J Winterbottom (1855—1941). Between 1903 and 1908, Robert Gayler worked as an operatic coach at [l=The Metropolitan Opera House]. He established a prolific stage career, performing as a piano accompanist with renowned opera and concert singers and cited among the country's foremost Celesta players (also called a "bell-piano" and invented circa 1860s, it was a hammer-struck idiophone with a keyboard about the size of an upright piano). Gayler served as a conductor and musical director at several churches and ensembles in Brooklyn, New Jersey, Long Island, and Branford, Connecticut. He joined [l=Edison Laboratories] in late 1916, appearing in the November issue of Edison Phonograph Monthly with a short bio and his Celesta rendition of "Christmas Eve" released on Blue Amberol 4-minute cylinder. Gayler subsequently made records on other mediums, including the short-lived "Royal Purple Amberol" series (identical to Blue Amberol but dyed in the distinctive bright purple as a marketing ploy) and several generations of vertical-cut Diamond Discs, from the earlier embossed records to the latest printed "white paper" label editions. In 1919, Robert Gayler participated in the iconic series of Sergei Rachmaninoff's recordings, where he performed original works on "S. D. Lauter & Co" concert grand (one of the few models produced by Newark-based manufacturer founded by German-American piano maker Solomon David Lauter (1827—1885) in 1862). The label's founder and great inventor, Thomas Edison, was practically deaf, with only 20% hearing left in his right ear (after scarlet fever and head trauma in his teenage years). An engineer and technician first and foremost, Edison wasn't even a music lover and lacked sophistication, knowledge, or particular taste. Nevertheless, he insisted on personally vetting the catalog and approving each signee. In the 2007 biography "The Wizard of Menlo Park," its author Randall Stross gives a few examples of Edison's notoriously bad A&R decisions; he rejected most popular songs as "miserable dance and ragtime selections," claimed that jazz was "for the nuts" and compared one performance with "the desperate moan of dying animals," and discarded [a=The Metropolitan Opera] as "lacking tune." Unsurprisingly, Thomas Edison declared an awkward, tall Russian genius Rachmaninoff, with his unprecedented technique as a mere "pounder" in the first audition. Robert Gayler and the label staff had to beg and plee with Edison to reconsider his dismissive opinion before he finally agreed to sign a ten-record deal. |
