Report created based on data in MusicBrainz as of 28/01/2025
Found 600568 artists, we show 1000 artists per page.
The report is not continually updated so may not reflect the current data within MusicBrainz and or Discogs databases.
These are Discogs artists not currently linked to a MusicBrainz artist, and we have been unable to find a potential link for either.
Many of these artists probably are in MusicBrainz in some form but they are not currently linked, the list is ordered so that Discogs artists with the most number of single artists releases are listed first on the basis that these artists would be of more interest.
Some problems will just be due to deficiencies in the Discogs to Musicbrainz artist matching algorithm employed by Albunack.
There are also timing issues as this report is not updated immediately so will not reflect recent modifications and additions to MusicBrainz and Discogs.
One issue in Discogs is they handle artist credits differently so a Discogs name consisting of multiple people is probably represented on MusicBrainz as two individuals, but we try to filter these out of this report
We have also omitted artists that are not unique in both MusicBrainz and Discogs because these artists are probably not missing just more difficult to match up.
Another issue is that some Discogs artists have multiple ids with one id just redirecting to the other, this is the case with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, do we add both links to MusicBrainz ?
Limited report to artists with at least two single artist releases for now.

Search | Add | 2 | Ernest Kanitz | A composer all his life, Ernest Kanitz was Professor in the Music School at the University of Southern California (USC) in the late 1940s-1950s, following forced emigration from Vienna in 1938. In December 1938 the local newspaper in Rock Hill, South Carolina announced his appointment at Winthrop College with the euphemism "he left Europe when Germany expanded " [see in Media]. Ernst Kanitz was born April 9, 1894 in Vienna. After studying law at the University of Vienna (J.D. 1918) [undertaken solely to satisfy his parents' wish that he "learn a useful occupation"; he studied with tutors and never actually went to a class], Ernst devoted himself between 1914 and 1920 to the systematic study of piano, theory and composition with Richard Heuberger (from 1912-1914) and Franz Schreker. Having turned 20 in 1914, Ernst tried twice to enlist in the army but was rejected due to his post-appendectomy "emaciated state" [family info]; he felt very bad about this. In November 1918, his work "Heitere Ouvertüre op. 4" was performed by the Wiener Symphoniker conducted by Franz Schreker. That same year, at the home of a musical acquaintance, he met Gertrud Reif, whom he married on June 28, 1920. Since he was "a composer, and had no money," her father made Ernst sign a pre-nuptial agreement (Gertrude's father had little of his own wealth left, after WW I). Early successes as composer [especially the premiere of the oratorio Das Hohelied (1921)] aided his musical career, which also led to teaching. From 1922 he was Professor of Theory and Analysis at the New Vienna Conservatory (Neues Wiener Konservatorium), and also taught numerous private students in composition). Kanitz conducted various student orchestras in Vienna, and in 1930 founded the Vienna Women's Chorus, with which he brought new choral music to the public in Vienna, Brno, Budapest and Paris [see in MEDIA]. The chorus lasted until Kanitz' emigration to the United States (by way of Holland; arrival was actually in New Jersey, on the ship Veendam on July 26, 1938 and the family never passed through Ellis Island, NY). Kanitz also composed original music for the modern dancer Lilian Harmel; her piece entitled "Magic Dance," to one of his compositions," was considered "the most interesting of her creations" by Dancing Times [see in MEDIA]. In the U.S. Dr. Kanitz, as he was always known, embarked on an extended teaching career, first at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. (1938-41), then as Head of the Music Department at Erskine College, Due West, S.C. (1941-44; his former student in Vienna, Felix Bauer, succeeded him at Erskine. Bauer's student-teacher relationship with Dr. Kanitz is discussed in Part 2 of Bauer's 1995 memoir housed in the Leo Baeck Institute in New York). In 1945 Ernest Kanitz moved to Los Angeles, to a position at the University of Southern California. Initially he was to replace an ill colleague; he remained at USC teaching composition and counterpoint until his retirement in 1959 (returned as guest professor there in 1960-1961). In 1948 he published A Counterpoint Manual. From 1961-1964 he taught at Marymount College in Palos Verdes, California; then he devoted himself exclusively to private teaching and composing. His Concerto for Bassoon was premiered by the San Francisco Symphony April 8, 1964 (Josef Krips). His Symphony No. 2 was premiered Dec. 11-13, 1968, by the San Francisco Symphony (Josef Krips). His activities had been severely restricted as early as 1967 by diminishing vision caused by glaucoma. Kanitz died in Menlo Park, CA in April 1978. Papers are in the archives of the University of Southern California -- the collection has a finding aid, and the collection is cited in Sources Relating to the History of Émigré Musicians 1933-1950. Further papers are at the University of California, Riverside in Library Special Collections. A list of published works in the online library catalog, OCLC, appears in WorldCat; search "Ernest Kanitz." The only available digitized recording of one of his pieces (partial) is at: http://youtube/fTwanjNuLHQ . See biographical sketch (.pdf file) attached under Media; open it in Adobe Acrobat & "rotate" in order to read. Ernest Kanitz is the subject of chapters in Österreichs neue Musik nach 1945: Karl Schiske, ed. Markus Grassl, Reinhard Kapp, Eike Rathgeber (2008) and in Music And Dance In California And The West (1948). Birth record appears in Wien (alle Bezirke), Geburtsanzeigen 1894 Records Nr. 0781-1263 (Apr.-Mai), Image #308 of 1171 (derived from record #901). Parents lived at Wien II, Nordbahnstrasse 44. Witnesses were [uncles] Dr. Julius Stricker and Emil Kanitz. As did many ethnically Jewish individuals in Vienna, Ernst Kanitz "resigned from the Jewish faith" as a young man (genteam.at, Resignations from the Jewish Faith); he did not convert to Catholicism even though (as he put it decades later), that could have helped him get certain jobs. Last Name Kanitz, First Name Ernst Date of Birth 1894.04.09 (April 9, 1894), Wien II, Nordbahnstrasse 44 Profession stud.jur. (law student) [he never practiced law] Leaving 1914, age 20, marital Status ledig

Search | Add | 2 | Fun For Malakai | Fun For Malakai was founded around 1989 in Ottawa by guitarist Ian Lefeuvre, drummer Dave Hubenig vocalist Chris Swail and bassist James Milks. Hubenig was replaced by Peter Von Althen around 1991. The band had a strong following locally, performing regularly at Zaphod Beeblebrox, Barrymores and The Downstairs Club, but never managed to gain popularity outside of Ottawa. Their timing may have been off as well, as their sound didn't fit with the emerging Grunge scene or the more playful acts like the Barenaked Ladies. The group disbanded in 1993 after Von Althen left to join The Skydiggers. Lefeuvre and Von Althen later worked together in the bands Starling and The Hundreds and Thousands.

Search | Add | 2 | Bedlam Opera | The over-documentation of the '90s' obsession with all things popular and British disregards what was well-known to those in the know at the time: that there lurked in the cracks, underneath the floorboards, in between the bits of peeling plaster, down the back of the radiators and on the tops of shelves long since abandoned by those fake feather dusters on sticks, some things that were neither (entirely) British nor popular. And then there was Bedlam Opera, the illegitimate IVF-spurned child of London poet jack beckett, finally forging a giggable line up after several abortive attempts at procreating with a Swiss man, a South African and an Aussie in 1996. The Aussie was Matt Cole, a virtuosic pianist from Melbourne, who brought his love of Debussy, [a=Leonard Cohen] and the [a=Dirty Three] to bear on beckett's attempt to revolutionise the rock lyric with a hybrid of surrealism, romanticism and lyric poetry to create a songwriting partnership that produced material that was part Cave/Waits/Staples/Brel/Curtis, part [a=Patti Smith], part [a=Mogwai], part sea shanty and part lots of other things on the fringes of the rock-pop-folk axis. Cole loved The Go-Betweens, beckett loved Baudelaire and krautrock. Losing Miguel Pedro to his native South Africa after their first gig in 1997, Cole and beckett added Sheffield-raised [a=Joe Murphy (11)] on accordion; Murphy gave life to the swashbuckling sailor songs and depth to their more tender moments with a Pogueish edge. Aylesbury's [a=Matt Dolphin], a fine folksy finger-picker, replaced Pedro on guitar, and the line up was completed by Anglophile Frenchman [a=Thibault De Montfort] on oboe, MBV-obsessed American drummer [a=Tom Wenzel] and Southampton-born cellist, and sometime member of The [a=Tindersticks]' orchestra, [a=Will Byers] (appearing as [a=Will Burrows] on Tindersticks’ releases). After a year or so earning their dues in the toilets of north London, developing a live show that was a little more than just a gig, and writing meandering melodic masterpieces like Nadja and Red Wine Song, Cole and Dolphin announced their intentions to quit. The 'classic' BO line up played their last gig at their first and only record launch [a 7" vinyl-only double A-side featuring Effervescent Architecture and When It's so Familiar] in February 1998. A year or so later beckett and Murphy played a handful of shows, now a trio with [a=Chris T-T] on guitar and piano, with a raft of new material in an attempt to keep the Opera fire burning, but they didn't manage to recapture the artistic heights of the Cole-driven 1997 version of the band. Being truly international, and not in the slightest bit popular, Bedlam Opera were possibly harder to grasp than some of their more generic, more rock-rooted contemporaries like Penthouse and [a=Dream City Film Club]; in truth, they died before their time had come. Murphy went on to make a considerable success of his main project [a=Sergeant Buzfuz] and Dolphin is still recording and performing as a solo artist. Byers played with Kid and Wenzel flaunted his not-inconsiderable skills on a European tour with Breed. Matt Cole's decision to return to Melbourne had tragic consequences when in 2005 he was killed by a hit and run driver who knocked him off his bike; his new band, Luzon, thereby hit the thankless trail of obscurity that had befallen Bedlam Opera several years before.

Search | Add | 2 | Firing Bullets | Richard Starke | Richard Starke was born in South Hampton and now resides in Seattle where he concocts some of the freshest experimental breaks this side of the pond. Starke is no new-comer to the world of production: he founded his first band at 15 after playing the guitar for only two years. After a brief signing to Giles Peterson's highly eclectic Acid Jazz moniker, Starke struck a deal with the High Llamas Sean O'Hagan. That in turn led to his full-length project Gideon Gaye. At this time he felt the urge to record something new. Not finding any likeminded musical mates in Seattle, Starke opted to use the late '90s musician's best friend: a Pentium 166. He downloaded and bootlegged software, and mixed in a 10-year supply of thrift store classics to create the music you have before you. Welcome to the new breakbeat sound of Firing Bullits |

Search | Add | 2 | Left Brain Heart | We are the kids of a tossed around generation here in Chicago. We’ve been in bands, we’ve toured with [a210521], we’ve grown up under the white Midwest sky, we’ve been in school, we’ve slept on the El, we’ve howled at the moon later than we were supposed too, and when we washed up we realized that we were in a band called Left Brain Heart. In the years bouncing around the clubs, we’ve gathered a great group of collaborators and conspirators, for instance we released our first CD together in 2008; “[r=5087126],” that was produced by [a596214] of Local H and [a775563] of [l323508] ([a132066], [a398014], [a954884], Local H). Recently, we went in a more progressive direction for 2010's "[r=5087046]" also guided through the magical hands/powers of Andy Gerber. BOOM! LBH

Search | Add | 2 | Fenderchet | Born in 1989, Jose Juan Silva (aka Fenderchet) started experimenting with MIDI-based recording programs at an early age. After his high school rock band called it quits he was left to his own devices. The results were staggering. Fenderchet references his local heroes Maseratti 2 litros as his initial motivation to do what he does. And if you want to break it down to what it really is, this is dreamy yet experimental pop music in both binary and organic forms. Expressing emotion via hardware can't be, and isn't an easy task. Fenderchet pulls it off gracefully. He wants you to listen to it when it rains. We think it works under the sun just as well.

Search | Add | 2 | Nicht vor den Kindern | In the spring of 2005, Hinrich Franck and Jörg Lehnardt - who have known each other for more than a decade through their work on film and theater projects as well as through joint music making in various bands - found a trio named: Nicht vor den Kindern Together with the drummer Heiko Braun they develop a style that miraculously mixes the classical organ or jazz piano trio with electronic to heavy metallic sounds. The repertoire from the All-American-Songbook becomes a direct further development of the "trio" in the popular entertainment music of the 21st century through Hinrich Franck's snappish German lyrics, 3-voice beat songs and campfire melodies.
